Prentice on cannabis

I don’t know why this is a moderator comment rather than a general comment but it provides an insight into the opinion of a prominent New Zealand blogger on cannabis use.

[lprent: Just to enter the spirit of the thing. I fully oppose people using cannabis for recreation. I consider that you’d have to be an idiot or in great pain to use it. After meeting some of the gormless fools who have used for a few decades (case in point), I can’t see why anyone would want to inflict on themselves.

However I also fully support legalising the sale, distribution, and high taxation of cannabis. With mandatory long prison sentences for anyone who adulterates it. I really don’t care about people who are fool enough to let it affect them. I think that they should prepay their inevitable hospital bills just as smokers and drinkers do.

If you think that is a “hate cannabis” note, then you are dead right (probably dead in the head, but that is a different matter). I really dislike the mindfucked who live in a haze of chemically induced stupor. I really want to see you pay more consumption taxes. ]

I think that makes it quite clear what Prentice thinks about pot puffers. It was in response to a hazy punktuated comment by a well known user of mind altering substances, Phillip Ure.

Quite agree. The recent coroners report into the death of a watersider at Lyttelton showed amongst other drugs he had also been using cannabis. Stood directly under a hatch where a crane manoeuvres to pick up cargo from the hold. Stupid is ….Dead

Speaking as a long term cannabis user, I think a lot of people fall under the hype of supposed ‘reports’ and ‘anti use’ messages from governments. I won’t say there are not some risks involved in using it just like any drugs legal or not. Prohibition has never worked and only serves to promote a counter culture. New Zealand lags behind even the USA in the understanding of cannabis use, both for pleasure and medicinal use. It being illegal never stopped me or my friends from using it or any other drugs we choose. Ergo the law is an ass.

The law never stops some people from raping or murdering. Ergo the law is an ass?

Lame attempt by you to dismiss the scientific research into cannabis effects.

When 50% of the people are raping and murdering and the law is not stopping them, then come back to me with your strawman arguments. Did you read what you wrote? Seriously comparing cannabis with rape and murder? Do you enjoy a wine after work? So do pedophiles. See where I can go with this?

Comparing cannabis use with rape & murder, smacks of ‘reefer madness’ propaganda. It was claimed that it caused; mass insanity, bloodlust & ‘unleashed passions’. Many murder cases in the 1930-40s USA were ‘linked’ to ‘marihuana’ (sic) use (often by ‘negroes & mexicans’) BUT years later, most were proved to be totally circumstantial, if not total misinfo. & lies. Alcohol is the DRUG that causes most harm & violence in society.. yet many in the ‘mainstream’ see it as effectively ‘harmless’ (in moderation)
I think the ‘reefer madness’ mind-set is so entrenched in a portion of the public, that regardless of any real EVIDENCE-based info. they will always believe the ‘demonised’ trash; still out there !

Time to end the ‘War on Drugs’ & introduce : Adults Only, taxable REGULATION. (as in Colorado)

Get with the times Zedd, plenty of 21st Century research scientifically demonstrating the harm of cannabis use.

Alcohol is consumed by almost everyone, therefore it would rate higher in the stats.

I’ve been around the block Zedd, I know how you and your mates sit around high on weed talking shit and acting like idiots and you think you are so funny and cool.

Anyone can have a few drinks and no harm done, where as weed has a very potent effect on the brain – and presumably that is why you like to use it, zedd – all that “mind expansion” and “getting in touch with the Universal Spirit” or something, LOL.

            • Sure.. push the ‘old hippy stereotypical’ labels. unfortunately one size does NOT fit all. So may I suggest you get with the times.. too

Next you’ll be saying Prohibition & the war on drugs are working to reduce harm & drug use LOL (Aotearoa/NZ having amongst the highest levels of personal cannabis use per capita, according to a recent UN report). “Its called FREEDOM of choice.. DUDE !”
btw: what I choose to do in the privacy of my home, is no ones business, but mine. (esp. as I’m only harming me)

50% of people are not using illegal drugs. Stop lying.

You can’t go anywhere with your stupid pro stoner stance.

Besides which I was not making a direct connection between weed heads like you and murder, it was the logic, which obviously went over your stoned brained.

You sure make a lot of stupid assumptions for someone who doesn’t smoke weed. Typical alcohol apologist. Why do you assume I am stoned when I am at work? I own and run a business involving heavy machinery which could take your fingers off or worse. You seem to have a lot of preconceived notions about cannabis which only serves to highlight your lack of knowledge on the subject.

            • Well said.. Ignorance is bliss, to these ‘prohibitionists’. They push the CRAP from the ‘reefer madness’ days, as if they think it is really valid !

I often think they have an agenda, of maintaining the status quo, because they are somehow benefiting from it. eg involved in Drug war industry or maybe another industry that relies on cannabis remaining outlawed ?!

  3. Way to go lprent, the fake war on drugs couldn’t operate without idiots like yourself keeping the market prices high.

Recently, a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa drug cartel operative gave testimony in court regarding what he knew about various deals struck with the US government starting in 2004. He alleged that Fast and Furious was a way to give weapons to their cartel so they could wipe out the competition and that they were allowed to run drugs, unencumbered, into the United States while apparently the proceeds of the sales were laundered by various US banks like Wachovia.

“Newly-obtained FAA registration records reveal that the American “mystery plane” busted this July with 35 kilos of heroin at an airport outside Sydney, Australia was a CIA plane. At least, it had been when it rolled off the assembly line 40 years earlier, courtesy a CIA deal with the U.S. Forest Service. And the CIA never sells off its planes.

Please explain why government corruption means drugs must be legalised.

      • lprent’s position was legalization and taxation, i.e. the state using drugs as a revenue source. My examples were intended so show the similarities between his position and state-sponsored organized crime, rather than to present an argument for legalization.
