Whale Oil down

The Whale Oil server is currently down (since at least 7:10 am Wednesday as reported by Loki, I hadn’t checked WO this morning, they have little of interest early in the morning).

WhaleOilDownOct15

Websites and blogs sometimes go down due to unexpected technical issues, it’s happened to Kiwiblog and The Standard from time to time.

So this could be a minor technical blip.

But it does remind one of a time in January last year when Whale Oil went down when it was under attack, and was hacked, which led to Dirty Politics.

UPDATE at 7:24 am – having justed posted that Whale Oil is back up again.

But it’s taking a looonnngg time to load 7 comments.

Disqus seems to be taking longer than usual.ย Reload?

Pete the Mod has a vague explanation:

Hi there. Did you miss us? Seems the forces of evil still haven’t given up trying.

Nige the Mod has added:

Good work keeping the place going Pete. You do a fantastic job behind the scenes that most will never know.

Loki says (in comments here) he noticed it was down at about 2 am.

I doubt that somebody is trying to hack the Whale again … because what would they have of value on their servers that anyone could possibly want ???

Perhaps Belt forgot to pay their monthly Internet bill. LOL.

    • Most likely an internal technical issue. They happen sometimes.

        @George

The Whale site went down at least half a dozen times between January and September last year, during the time that I was a regular commenter and reader over there.

Since I have been here, I don’t recall your website ever being off-line ๐Ÿ™‚

I am overseas at the moment and first noticed around 2 am kiwi time. Was down for around five hours.
More likely to be unpaid bill than a hack.
Or it just broke. They have so much clunky crap running in the background to game the stats it is probably due for a meltdown.

I have the fastest publicly available connection in NZ and Slater/Belt site is literally the slowest site I ever visit. I often wonder how slower connections could ever manage the home page let alone battle with click through disqus frailties.

I have a 100 GB connection, the WO site loads fine for me, it’s faster loading than this site and Stuff. And unlike others, I was enjoying some deep beauty sleep so didn’t notice it down at all. Must go, time for another Latte.

Loki what’s the word on Whaleoils numbers? Until recently I would take them at their word but after Pete Belts deception over the book I just don’t trust them. There’s no real feel of numbers there now and I think even The Standard would have better numbers? I know they’ve lost almost a third of their audience but were the numbers ever really there?

         /  21st October 2015

Look at who built the site . Then look at the frankly astonishing stats for their site.
Many of the regular every day posts are just there for Google search.
        Proverb. Face of day eg.
Then you have to click through on almost every post.. Click harvesting. It is fairly smart but ultimately hopeless when advertisers are repulsed by you.
Doesn’t matter how many readers you have. Real or bots..
Mainstream advertisers will not touch him.
Would be like a serial killer appearing in court wearing a shirt sponsored by smith and Wesson .. He is toxic

        • “Mainstream advertisers will not touch him.”

Is this because of the site content or because of Left wing critics threatening twitter boycott campaigns against companies that advertise there?

          • It’s style, substance and character, or the absence of all three.

Aside from the like or loathe aspect of WO, the Left wIng Twitter terror gang led by Tiso and others is terrible, it smacks of just shutting down anything they don’t like. I took on one of their choir boys some time ago, we use their products and I publically offered to stop using his employers peoducts / services if he continued his vile attacks, and to recommend others stop using his employers services as a result of his views and attacks. It was an exact reversal of their attack on Spark for offering WO some support, The chap no doubt draws a huge salary as a business professional and rightfully deserves it, but did not like his revenue and position challenged. He soon got the message that attacking the advertisers and revenue is not okay.

It also gets to me these wannabe activists feel free to amass their own assets yet attack others revenue without any thought but their own political beliefs.

            • Those lefties are just exercising their right to free speech. Whether or not anyone chooses to listen to or action that speech is their prerogative.

      • The stats are provided by a third party.

It might have been as simple as Slater not paying the Power Bill … and the electricity was scheduled to be cut off at midnight on the last day for payment ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Eh?

     /  21st October 2015

    It’s up and running now

  4. Meh…. staged to give the impression that people give a stuff about the site??? [/humour]

    • DaveG

       /  21st October 2015

Oh the irony Dave1924. They give so much of a stuff about it, PeteG devoted an entire post to it, the regulars here debate what was the cause, and the twittersphere had many many tweets about it. Best laugh I have had in ages thanks.

      • An excellent point well made DaveG.

      • WO posts are popular here, there’s quite a few who are interested in cross blog issues.

        • DaveG

           /  21st October 2015

Yes Pete, I note there are a lot here that are ex WO’ers on here and they are quite cross, angry in fact! The energy expended astounds, given the WO site is now one of the cleanest around.

          • That’s the point WO comments are clean because WO has been cleansed of dissent. Critics are banned. So there’s a forum available here for people to express their opinions about WO without being censored.

Message control has limits on the net.

And choice means those who don’t like WO being criticised can ignore it.

A site claiming to be the biggest and best must expect some holding to account and criticism

Not that you’re likely to see much criticism at WO about all the critical posts about a newspaper

While the Cock is still strutting around the hen house a couple of times a day, his wings are obviously clipped, his feathers are sparse and ruffled and more and more often the hens were all serviced before he got up.
It’s not working whatever they and you say DaveG. The centre right needs a political voice online and WhaleOil is not providing that. Pete’s format is good, getting better and we like it.

        @DaveG
Yeah Dave and a lot of us post elsewhere because we got sick of the ‘sycophantic circle jerk’ (kudos to whoever wrote that in here) from people such as yourself. You and others come in here and rabbit on how you can have such good debates and how you’ve disagreed stongly with Slater or Belt or Atkins but if your user name there is known all your posts can be trawlled and the only dissention found in most cases is ‘I’d best not say anything I might get banned.’ Not exactly robust debate. None of the dunces in there had the courage to take on Belt when he tried to worm his way out of his Amazon comment, saying it was all planned etc. You go on about others but every time someone challenges you with the fact that you wouldn’t get away with posting the same on WO, suddenly you clam up. Of course other blogs are going to get the finger pointed and be commented on, especially the bullshit that gets posted there. And as for Atkins saying it’s the haters etc, no Juana, I go there to laugh at you, someone who likes to try and put themselves across as some kind of expert but can’t tell the difference between satire and truth and takes articles that are cherrypicked all to hell and spouts on about how true they are. Shows your stupidity.
At least you don’t have to kiss arse in here eh Dave.

For those of you good folks who like to dance on graves but would never lower yourselves to go near the evil whale (except of course we know you do sneak over nudge nudge wink wink) here are some insights from SB this morning. I have to say it does have a ring of truth about it. Enjoy…
“Over on the Blog of the Damned it is all they can talk about. I seriously doubt that the blog of the damned would continue if they didn’t have Whaleoil to bitch about. They are proud that there has never been a hack attempt on their blog. It seems pointless to point out to them that you need to be EFFECTIVE and powerful before anyone will expend that kind of effort to try to take you down LOL One of their commenters was saying our site was down at 2am. For haters of Whaleoil they sure keep a close eye on us”

    • Karen

       /  21st October 2015

OMG! The good folk at Whaleoil complaing of obsessive behaviour??? It’s a never ending river of irony ๐Ÿ˜‚

    • Not so true. My gmail was hacked a month before Slater’s.

And she is wrong in the main to confuse hate with criticism. Referring to haters snacks of a ‘poor us’ syndrome.

    • Mefrostate

       /  21st October 2015

LOL we discuss WO here because it has so very many shortcomings which are impossible to bring up over there without getting banned. At least this blog gives us a consolidated place to really explore just how wrong WO is about so very many topics.

      • RightOfGenghis

         /  21st October 2015

Fair point Mefro. I do understand why so many bannees (including moi) have coalesced around this blog. Where I have difficulty is for some folks here their feelings of rejection and hurt seem to have overwhelmed their ability to reason

        • Mefrostate

           /  21st October 2015

I think you’re best-off just calling them out for that as & when it happens. For me I don’t feel rejected (as Belt, Slater and Atkins opinions of me couldn’t possibly mean less), but rather frustrated that they happily boast their No.1 Blog status without allowing any dissension.

Does anyone really care what SB says? Truth is ROG, there are many here who “USED TO” enjoy the Whaleoil blog and are gobsmacked that it’s become such a shitty little “me-too” club. Whaleoil used to be edgy and funny and now it’s not. End of.

      @RoG

I bet Spanish Bride has no idea how many of the Whales current regular readers and commenter’s come here using different pseudonyms to vent and discuss things that would get them banned if they tried to do the same thing over at the Whale. LOL.

    • Loki

       /  21st October 2015

Whaleoil, his Facebook and his gmail got “hacked” because his password was whaleoil0
ONE PASSWORD FOR EVERYTHING. And had probably NEVER been changed. A tech retard version of Darwin awards should be awarded annually and called the Slater.
Then his fantasies and outright bullshit was printed in a book as actual fact.
At that point the damage was done.
He was hardly going to stand up and admit he is a liars liar was he.
Hoist by (not “with” you grammar criminal Slater) his own petard. Or undone by a big vat of his own bullshit.

        @Loki

Firstly, what has made you hate Slater’n’Co so much ???

Secondly, how do you seem to know so much about what goes on behind the scenes at the Whale ???

Thirdly, this is not s criticism of you … just some straight questions ๐Ÿ™‚

      • RightOfGenghis

         /  21st October 2015

        @Loki,
You certainly appear to be spraying allegation and innuendo around. So you expect us to believe slater used the password ‘whaleoil0’ because Loki said it was so. Just one shred of evidence please, untainted by fiction, fantasy and vindictiveness. Chrs RoG

        • A fair question. A specific claim unsubstantiated. I’ve seen nothing on this anywhere except that it passwords were ridiculously simple.

Can you back up this claim Loki?

          • Loki

             /  21st October 2015

            Yes I can.
But will not be submitting myself to a full force whale attack by revealing who I am.
Pete if you have any senior journo contacts. Call them and ask what the password was.
All the insiders know. And all the msm know.
            They are all still laughing.
There are many of us who went quiet after Key got in. Doesn’t mean we didn’t stop fighting for him.
The sooner slater is gone the sooner the brains trust can start again.

I understand you wanting to protect your real identity.

But you can’t keep writing those sort of statements and allegations in here … without some proof ๐Ÿ™‚

You had better turn out to be someone extremely rich or famous … otherwise you will end up being laughed at and crucified in here. LOL.

            • You don’t have to reveal who you are. Are you saying that substantiating means revealing your identity?

It is well concealed from the Internet if so many know and it isn’t out there somewhere.

The standard is little different in tone and emotion from what the right wing blogs were when labour were in power.
Most of the quality right wing blogs were run by angry people with jobs.
Slater stayed in because he hasn’t worked in a decad and had nothing else to do.
The right wing blogs will come back the day labour win.
We might be waiting a while for that though ๐Ÿ™‚

Call Any msm journo you may have as a contact and ask them to confirm whaleoil0 off the record.

      More than once!!!

Maybe it’s time to be grateful for the moron that is Pete Belt.

For a long time I was personally disappointed that Belt had ‘cost’ the Slaters my contribution to their family finances (yeah yeah I know – I’m one of those suckers) but what I now see is that Pete Belt saved me some dollars… and some regret.

I wrote to Slater after giving up on Belt because I was concerned that he would let me go for such a pathetic issue. I told him that Pete was closing down a generous supporter. I got a reply from Belt who said Slater passed it back to him and should just piss off. I doubt Slater even saw it.

I also wrote to Belt after my banning, and he told me that the ban was permanent.

So then I phoned Slater on his mobile phone number, and much to my surprise Slater answered.

Slater told me that he did not have anything to do with the moderating and banning on the Whale anymore, and that Belt was in charge of it.

Then Slater told me he needed to get back to his fishing …and he hung up on me ๐Ÿ™‚
