WO #2: The changing claims about Google Ads

This is the second in a series of posts addressing claims at Whale Oil   that Google are ISIL huggers, that makes varying claims about why Google Ads ceased on Whale Oil for part of yesterday and then resumed again, that tries to raise donations to fund the ongoing operation of the blog, and that makes highly ironic claims about freedom of speech and censorship.

REVEALED: WHY WHALEOIL ISN’T RUNNING GOOGLE ADS ANY LONGER [UPDATED 5PM]

On October 29, Whaleoil published The only solution is to kill them before they kill us, an article covering how ISIS and other Islamic adherents bent on throwing gays off building and subjugating women are to be met by preemptive force to protect our way of life and freedoms, such as they are.

This set off a small but vocal part of Social Media.  No surprise:  exactly the same people who are always busy trying to damage Whaleoil in some way.   This time a petition was created to request the Human Rights Commission take Whaleoil to court for “hate speech“.   And as you’d expect, this was promoted by other blogs and even some main stream media journalists.  (Oh the irony).

More about “Oh the irony” irony later.

The post (by Whale Oil Staff) revealed why Whale Oil isn’t running Google Ads any more, except the revelation story changed through the day.

But our critics didn’t leave it there.  They have also been busy placing pressure on our advertisers.

Belt didn’t actually reveal why Whale Oil had stopped running Google Ads. He went into a now common “poor us” spiel and pleaded for donations to keep Whale Oil running (and presumably to fund his wages or drawings).

He said that critics were targeting their advertisers but gave no explanation.

Someone soon asked for an explanation.

I think I missed it… Why aren’t you using Google ads?

Cameron Slater replied:

Because they have complained to Google and Google has suspended the ads until we comply with Google’s ISIS friendly policy.

An exchanged followed:

Is there an appeal process considering you clearly were not talking about genocide but an armed terrorist group?

It takes ages, and you are essentially dealing with a machine rather than real people. Google’s motto is “Don’t be Evil” and then they support the people supporting ISIS by allowing terrorists to harm their publishers.

I don’t know if it would make it faster, but Google for me has always been really fast and effective to communicate with over the phone. A carrot and stick approach to a real person might help.

Please contact Cam with a phone number and a name if you have one. Getting hold of a real person to talk to has always been the biggest hurdle.

Done.

It’s sounds like Google will automatically suspend ads when they get a complaint until they sort the complaint out. Paypal does the same kind of thing – they will “de-credit” your account if somebody lodges a dispute. It’s happened to me twice. Both times I won but it’s a pain waiting for Paypal to investigate.

And takes ages

I have the same issues communicating with Google, we wanted to suspend advertising with them for a few months in the quiet season, but still be in the Google listings for search engines, but they cancelled the lot, it took me over 6 weeks to sort it out, ,and not one human was encountered.

Google, amongst the worlds fastest search engines, and the worlds slowest companies to respond or the worst for client service.

PS. If anyone from Google reads this and objects, don’t get your knickers in a bunch, pick up the phone NOW! You have the power to sort it immediately.

So Urbanviper said it could be done quickly and Slater said twice it “takes ages”.

Another question asked:

so what happened to Google ads?
Did google pull your account?

Suspended until we bring the site in line with Google’s requirements. But that’s a process that takes a week or two during which we have a serious downturn in income.

EDIT: Imagine doing your own budgeting, having rates, or rent, mortgage payments, food, etc and then suddenly someone takes half your income for the month? It’s not a killer blow, but it is severely disruptive.

Whaleoil will continue. No matter what. The actual people getting hurt are Cam’s family. They are the ones staring at a very lean holiday period. It’s seriously nasty.

A claim it will take “a week or two” to resume Google Ads revenue. Plus leaning on the sympathy card again. That was at 10:56 am yesterday.

Soon after another question, responded to by Slater:

How will this bode for future posts?

It is a matter of understanding what exactly trips Google’s algorithms and then not doing that again. We have a switch we can throw on any single post that turns off the ads while that post is on the page also. This is how we occasionally have content that doesn’t pass Google’s test.

The reason we got caught is because this isn’t a test we have failed before. So we will modify language, and in the cases we feel the language is compromised by modification, we turn off the ads.

That was at 11:07 am. Belt now claims that they are aware of Google’s algorithms and their post failed the test and caught them out. Nothing to do with mean lefties trying to attack their advertisers.

So they misjudged (or stuffed up) but laid the blame elsewhere and pushed the sympathy laden begging bowl hard.

At 5pm an update was added. Unless people read one buried comment by Belt admitting their actual problem with Google Ads they thought that donations were being sought to fight back against the nasty attackers of Whale Oil.

UPDATE:  5 pm

Readers started reporting the ads are showing back up, and after a while, they have started showing for us as well.    The thing that worries us is that we have not received any confirmation from Google that the problem was solved.

So we are cautiously optimistic.

However, and this is a big however, our experience with this process in the past means we have very little confidence that the ads will continue to be served until we get confirmation.  The Google Bot is even more merciless than I am as a moderator, and it is hard to appease.

In the mean time, we are glad to have some income back, and are crossing fingers hoping that email that says it’s all good now is on the way…

– Pete (Belt)

So they misled about the cause of Google Ads not running and only a vague explanation in the Update about the real cause – “The Google Bot is even more merciless than I am as a moderator, and it is hard to appease.”

With Whale Oil’s history and Pete Belt’s history of devious and untrustworthy behaviour it’s fair to be highly sceptical about this, to the extent that it’s even possible Belt shut down Google Ads himself to give him an excuse to run more fund raising.

At the least they over-egged the situation to take advantage of gullible givers.

Jeez you really have the knives out for Slater this morning.

Here’s an idea Pete, why dont you do some back to back article coverage on female genital mutilation amongst NZs migrants and other “cultural enrichening practices”?

Slater may be far from perfect but watching you kick a guy when he is down is worse.

Too many on here a grinding an axe, because they got kicked off WO.

    GET OVER IT.

Pete gets to choose what he writes on his blog. If you have an issue with fgm or anything else, start your own blog and knock yourself out.
Slater and Belt’s machinations to extract money are relevant here. PG is showing up their hypocrisy, desperation and ingratiating behavior.

‘the man’ should ask why he is down in the first place. Actions have consequences, something I realized when I was 12.

      🤓”Kick a guy when he’s down?”
How about unapologetic virtual clapping when young NZ men die tragically in car crashes. I would have thought booting a bereft family who might just be at its lowest ebb was not an option. Slater knows how to dish it but when he stuffs up yet again with a hate shoutout, but the call to protect HIS mental health goes out pretty damned smart in the aftermath. Whybis his mental health the issue here. He is after all a self described down and dirty, filthy political player!
It’s clear that he Slater and support crew set him bizarrely above being accountable for the behaviour they demands from others. Hypocrisy and a systematic lack of empathy define him and his blog. I can’t see how such a lack of self awareness advances his cause ( whatever that is this week, but I suggest it’s just wages these days ) or why on earth he should be defended.

@trav. I’m going to partially back Slater on the story you mention about “when young NZ men die tragically in a car crashes”. The incident you refer to was based on INCORRECT media reports from Stuff who initially reported the deceased as the Driver, almost immediately correcting it. I read the original story on stuff, whilst a late night post, I was still up and trawling the media, it was a headline story, “car crash moves house from foundations, driver dies at scene”. Then go back and look at the total and utter over reaction in the media. But, the main points for me is the Hatred from the coasters, Clark called them ferals and almost no reaction, yet they threatened violence and rape of Slaters family, now that is not the territory of normality. Then look at how the coasters treated the Feral who killed Judd, there was no venom at him, no hissy fits, no aggression outside court, despite several previous drink / dangerous convictions. Slater was actually correct, they are a bunch of ferals, almost every one of them.

        • It wasn’t ‘feral’ that got everyone worked up. It was Slater’s assertion that the guy got what he deserved. Slater latched on to ‘feral’ as misdirection.

Please check again, the media initially reported that as the driver died at the scene, and in that case, I would have agreed with what he said, not all of it, but hie commented on a post by Stuff, who then changed it. And, what of that village idiot, not one cross word against him. Go figure,

DaveG – it’s all well and good teasing out the minutiae of how this craven filth got done over by bad timing and Stuff-up- and even if he was ‘correct’ at the time of going to press- he’s still openly playing big boys games from behind the safety of his blogsite, and it is continuously naiive of Slater to think that everyone else will play ball according to his rules.
Even if the feral comment was an innocent mistake- the driver’s death should not be celebrated in such salivating fashion- and that is just ONE instance of him revelling in someone’s misfortune/demise. Let’s not even begin to list the number of times he has been instrumental in creating misfortune for others. Lets not even begin on the fact that he takes money from a snake like CGraham to sell tobacco. The biggest killer in our community- legal or not- they are worse than heroin dealers.
Free speech is fine- but for a guy that regularly boasts about his ability to play hardball- he should man up and stop whining about everyone ganging up on him-

If I was a guy called “Google”, and someone like Slater called me “ISIS friendly”- without a skerrick of evidence- that’s a pretty big call – should I not feel absolutely justified in slapping the crap out of him within the law, and enjoying every moment of it?

And if that screeching harlot of a beneficiary Spanish Bride goes hungry as a result, or his poor progeny- aren’t we well within reason to say- “Well that’s a result of the lifestyle choices you made, mate”.

Ironic that the Slaters may feel themselves -and their security- at the mercy of powers beyond their control, uncaring, cold forces who are happy to see them vanish- much like the personal experiences of a great many New Zealanders who have found themselves on hard times through no fault of their own- but are labelled ‘troughers’, ‘bludgers’,’feral’,’scum’ etc etc.

The irony of all, of course – is that their endgame has been, and always will be- not to stand up and be decent compassionate people- NO – they put their hand out with the begging bowl- and when all else fails- they’ll both run home to their respective Daddies and cry on their lap.

There are few things more despicable than the toffs on easy street laughing at those who weren’t born into money as though they are lesser people.

          Filth.

Firstly, it’s somewhat ironic that you have made a trip over from your usual home at the Whale, specifically to tell George and the rest of us in here what we should and shouldn’t be writing. LOL.

Secondly, you’re also a very prolific user of Georges Open Forum Post to write heaps of shit about pretty gory distasteful topics … and most of which is very squewed in its view and also designed to incite emotion and outrage.

And finally, could you please elaborate as to how exactly Cameron Slater is “down” … because from what we can gather in here, Slater and his Wife get paid money for doing sweet fuck all at the Whale 🙂

Kiwi Guy isn’t it great that you have the freedom to have a crack at Pete for Whaleoil posts?

Try going to WO and having a crack at them for their multiple obsessions with – well take your pick? NZ Herald, Steven Joyce (or anyone that’s threatens Judiths leadership aspirations) The dodgy dam… I could go on and on…but I couldn’t do it there and neither could you …so cut Pete and the commentators here some slack. The very fact that everyone here is pretty much free to talk about whatever they like is the very reason you have a platform for you anti (radical) Islamic posts.

Frankly I don’t want Pete to change and I don’t want to see your posts go either so it’s a bit of live and let live around here.

I’m not sure I believe that ‘NZs #1 Blog’ would know how to contact Google.

When I had a look at that post yesterday after reading about it here, I could not load any comments (although I could on all the other WO posts). I tried several times before realising I had to turn off my ad blocker to see the comments. Strange.

You’re in conspiratory theory there. How about the much more likely explanation that google ads stopped showing and they thought they would be without ad income for a couple of weeks?

How do you know that Belt didn’t switch the Google Ads off? 🙂

And the real story is … that despite Belt and Slater both rabitting on yesterday saying that it would take weeks to get Google to reinstate them … the ads were back up less than 12 hours later. LOL.

They have posted a screenshot of an email from Google today, saying that the post yesterday violated their policies. So may be Google don’t like anti-Google posts? I imagine they might object to their policies being referred to as “ISIS-friendly”.

Obviously, if the ads were removed automatically as a result of a complaint or complaints then it would have taken longer than 12 hours to reinstate as a real person would have had to investigate the complaints. The more likely explanation is the adsense “bad content” sensor was triggered and when the offending post was edited it fixed the problem with no humans being involved. 🙂

So, given you have the “real story” and the ads were back up less than 12 hours later, why is a commenter declared a troll (and banned) for asking if they were going to refund the money donated to support their “crisis”, given (as it turns out) there was no crisis? I thought this a fair question, in fact I asked it here yesterday?

Because the implication is that the crisis was purposefully manufactured in order to get more money. It’s fair enough to speculate about it here but not on WO. It’s kind of like calling someone a rapist in their own home. I would think that they would have every right to throw you out.

And I would have declared the commentator a troll and banned him too.

No, that’s not the implication at all. It’s the same as financially supporting a cause, and finding there was no cause at all – e.g. the woman who crowd-funded her breast cancer operation, but she didn’t have breast cancer. Get my drift – it’s taking money under false pretenses. The fact they didn’t even “offer” to refund the donations, given there was no ongoing crises, supports a purposefully manufactured crisis. The Chimp who Cried Wolf – great title for their next book.

Yeah … but if they really are a Rapist … then throwing their accuser out doesn’t change the fact that they are a Rapist does it 🙂
