Moderator notice

Clearly there has been some totally unacceptable behaviour in commenting here over the last week. I kept with a no-ban policy as a matter of principle, and until now have not needed to ban anyone – most people use common sense and heed guidelines on expected standards of behaviour.

Free speech is a very important principle and as much as possible I want to enable free speech here. But with freedoms there are responsibilities, and those responsibilities were ignored and abused by several commenters.

And I have a responbsibility to protect people who participate here from unacceptable levels of abuse.

I have decided to not issue outright bans. However I am issuing a warning to three commenters that their behaviour here was totally unacceptable and that behaviour like that again will not be tolerated.

Before THUNDERBIRD 4, Person W and Person X (you know who you are) comment here again on Your NZ you need to contact me and assure me that you will:

  • Behave in a reasonable manner that is appropriate to Your NZ at all times
  • Use one pseudonym only
  • Use a verifiable email address
  • Not abuse, threaten or defame anyone
  • Not comment here if you are associated with any legal action against me (that should be obvious to anyone with any legal experience).

Most people participating here comply with most or all of those conditions. Anyone seriously breaching behavioural standards will be requested to assure compliance as above before commenting.

This won’t affect most people here. If people seriously abuse free speech responsibilities then requirements for their participation here will be more stringent.

Pete George

  1. Here, Here PG, not before time. Rather than bans, consider time out, for consideration and modification of out of line commens?

I like the time out idea, too-I hadn’t thought of that.Make it a longish time out, so that they will know that you mean business or will lose interest. These people are genuinely ill, but their illness isn’t a pretty sight, I’ve heard of folie a deux, but this is folie a quatre or cinq. .

Oops, I meant that I think that they are ill.

            @Kitty

Pretty sure that you said “Certifiable” the other day … and you would be 100% correct on that 🙂

Certifiable might mean something nice 😀 A certificate for contributions to charity or something like that 😀

It’s your unkind mind that thinks that it means the other kind of certifiable, 😀

Number 5 could be a bit problematic for some of the pseudonyms that have been frequently commenting in Georges blog recently 🙂

You could say that they can only comment on general or neutral issues like Jonah Lomu’s death. That would, I suppose, be effectually a ban as they wouldn’t want to do this.

I would see using vicious personal attacks as reasonable grounds for banning someone.

… or spamming drivel all over the website. I still like my idea of moving all their comments to the “Sewer” thread.
