Things are bad, huh. Rebecca? Pity you didn’t break down the ethnicities of these women so we could better asses if they are thrill seeking slappers or genuine Muslims of middle eastern origin. That really would have made a difference. Another thing you may be missing is the number of girls aged between 5-13, of middle eastern descent, who leave our shores for overseas around this time of the year. But that’s for you to find out and report to the relevant authorities. Obviously, you know we are nearing a terrorist attack, what with our army ramping up training and such. So why don’t you tell the PM to holt all Muslims immigration till you, to use “The Donalds” phrase, find out what the hell is going on
That would not be a political call- it would be an operational call.

I can’t see many girls so young leaving for overseas alone, they’d need their parents’ consent-and a 5 year old is unlikely to get it or be an asset to the movement. And if someone is legally an adult, there is probably nothing that anyone can do to stop them ruining (and possibly losing) their life. What could be done to stop someone emigrating to anywhere they want to go to ?

Halting Muslim immigration is not an answer. Would you have prevented the UN translators who risked their lives for NZ coming here, on the grounds that they were Muslims ? I don’t see Donald Trump as someone to emulate.

Donald Trump didn’t say he was going to halt Muslim immigration permanently.
        I would.
The young girls are going overseas to be circumcised. The xmas holidays give them time to
        heal..

For New Zealand…no. I simply extrapolated it out. A simple check by the SIS
could see whether it is right our wrong.

Timoti, whilst female circumcision is a horrible thing, it is not a national security issue, perhaps you could explain how it impacts national security, and is something that is the responsibility of the SIS.

It doesn’t impact on National security, but it shows our services are “narrow focusing” too much. All folk with Muslim sounding names should be checked out. Now if those names have an associated young female travelling with them at this time of the year, patterns would develop that could be passed on to, say welfare, to check, remedy or prosecute, thus saving us money down the track treating Fked up girls. No big deal.

But I will be honest with you. Key says 40 people of interest are being watched. My guess- its closer to 200-500 who should be
under stringent watch, but because of overwhelming numbers
the SIS has had to prioritise. When we have our first terrorist attack the attacker will probably be from this outer group of suspects.

What you are suggesting is not the job of the SIS, and they don’t have the legal right, or the resources, to do it either.

It is up to communities, schools, and police to monitor girls who may be at risk from this kind of thing, and it is up to those groups / agencies to report them to social welfare. Also, it is Customs who monitors the comings and goings of people across our border – why not make it their responsibility to report any young girls going to the middle east to social welfare?

What I am suggesting should be a natural outcome of SIS
algorithms monitoring every Muslim coming and going. It is a by product. The SIS have every legal right to pass such information on. Its Customs who would create a shitstorm
of outrage if they started profiling. It has happened before when a Muslim man claimed he had been picked on. Of course, he was right. And if I remember correctly Customs had to lie their way out of it . You know our banks have algorithm running all the time. They monitor your every transaction, look for fraud and other unusual patterns.
They inform other government departments if they don’t like what they see. Ironically, algorithms are the creation of
              Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi,
To summarise, such information would be a by product that could be passed on for further investigation at the click of
a button. No wasted man power needed.

So you think that SIS are directly monitoring border control? I think you are reaching here, and my understanding is that Customs are the only agency monitoring comings and goings at the border (with Immigration), and I would imagine that SIS (as with other agencies) have to ask Customs (with a warrant of course) for information regarding specific people.

If SIS were to monitor ALL muslims coming and going, they would have to have manpower in order to be able to investigate and verify every muslim in NZ and then prepare the warrant to ask Customs for the information – so yes, extra resources will be required. In law enforcement and I would imagine cases of National Security, monitoring individuals is not a case of running computer algorithms, and it is not something you can do without extra resources.

NZ is not like China, all of our Government agencies work on separate networks and they are not linked into one big super network that every agency has access to.

I just cannot believe that any young woman in her right mind would think it is a good idea to leave NZ for Syria. Surely nobody in NZ could have a life so bad that Syria looks like a better option? These girls must be seriously brainwashed.

I think that they’re seriously stupid and gullible; who’d be brainwashing them all over the country ? I also can’t see under 13s doing this, especially 5 to 13s. They wouldn’t be able to travel alone at 5. The Jihadi Brides must think that it’s a glam, cool, radical thing to do. Dream on. ladies. You couldn’t have paid me enough to go back to my parent’s homeland-Ulster-and be an IRA bride (even if I was the right religion) as I’d know that I’d be lucky not to return in a box or minus my kneecaps (if I’d gone during the Troubles) and tried to leave. If I’d gone to do that and the Protestant faction had found out, I’d also be lucky to get out intact. And the Jihadi Brides are indeed going on one way tickets. We’ve all been fervent somethings when we were much younger, but most of us are lucky in that when we outgrow it there are no repercussions, or not ones like theirs. .

I entered into a very bad relationship indeed at 18-would I be told ? No, I knew what I was doing. Nobody could tell me anything. A friend married the town bad boy at 17-she knew what she was about, too. She swallowed her pride and when her father asked what she wanted for a 21st present, she said ‘A divorce.’ But the Jihadi brides won’t have that option.

In my youth, people were joining the Moonies-they knew what they were doing. Yeah, right.

I’m sure we all did a few silly things when we were young. In my case it was sneaking out to parties, not Syria!
