Has a World War started?

According to John Pilger a world war is under way. Currently it is just a propaganda war but a growing nuclear raises the risks of a major escalation,

Pilger: A World War Has Begun. Break the Silence.

How many people are aware that a world war has begun? At present, it is a war of propaganda, of lies and distraction, but this can change instantaneously with the first mistaken order, the first missile.

The Obama administration has built more nuclear weapons, more nuclear warheads, more nuclear delivery systems, more nuclear factories.  Nuclear warhead spending alone rose higher under Obama than under any American president. The cost over thirty years is more than $1 trillion.

A mini nuclear bomb is planned. It is known as the B61 Model 12. There has never been anything like it.

And it raises the temptation and risk of a limited strike.

In the last eighteen months, the greatest build-up of military forces since World War Two — led by the United States — is taking place along Russia’s western frontier. Not since Hitler invaded the Soviet Union have foreign troops presented such a demonstrable threat to Russia.

What makes the prospect of nuclear war even more dangerous is a parallel campaign against China.

Seldom a day passes when China is not elevated to the status of a “threat”.

According to Admiral Harry Harris, the US Pacific commander, China is “building a great wall of sand in the South China Sea”.

What he is referring to is China building airstrips in the Spratly Islands, which are the subject of a dispute with the Philippines – a dispute without priority until Washington pressured and bribed the government in Manila and the Pentagon launched a propaganda campaign called “freedom of navigation”.

What does this really mean?  It means freedom for American warships to patrol and dominate the coastal waters of China.  Try to imagine the American reaction if Chinese warships did the same off the coast of California.

A bigger arsenal and more provocation.

The propaganda laying the ground for a war against Russia and/or  China is no different in principle. To my knowledge, no journalist in the Western “mainstream” — a Dan Rather equivalent, say –asks why China is building airstrips in the South China Sea.

The answer ought to be glaringly obvious. The United States is encircling China with a network of bases, with ballistic missiles, battle groups, nuclear -armed bombers.

This lethal arc extends from Australia to the islands of the Pacific, the Marianas and the Marshalls and Guam, to the Philippines, Thailand, Okinawa, Korea and  across Eurasia to Afghanistan and India. America has hung a noose around the neck of China. This is not news. Silence by media; war by media.

Hillary Clinton is shaping up as quite likely to be the next US president.

In the 2008 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton threatened to “totally obliterate” Iran with nuclear weapons. As Secretary of State under Obama, she participated in the overthrow of the democratic government of Honduras. Her contribution to the destruction of Libya in 2011 was almost gleeful. When the Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi, was publicly sodomised with a knife – a murder made possible by American logistics – Clinton gloated over his death: “We came, we saw, he died.”

Among Clinton’s biggest backers are the Israel lobby and the arms companies that fuel the violence in the Middle East. She and her husband have received a fortune from Wall Street. And yet, she is about to be ordained the women’s candidate, to see off the evil Trump, the official demon.

Is Pilger close to being accurate? If so there are some real concerns – for the world.

What has happened to the great tradition of popular direct action, unfettered to parties? Where is the courage, imagination and commitment required to begin the long journey to a better, just and peaceful world? Where are the dissidents in art, film, the theatre, literature?

Where are those who will shatter the silence? Or do we wait until the first nuclear missile is fired?

Should we be worried?

Well, there’s nothing that we (YNZers, or NZers generally) can do. This has been said before and never happened. I would have thought that China had too much to lose, and probably the US as well. China depends upon the rest of the world (or much of it) for its living from trade (doesn’t it ?) so why would it begin anything ? I would guess that nuclear weapons would result in a Mexican stand-off. Or am I being naive ?

If it had happened every time that something like this has been predicted, we’d all have been blown to bits long ago.

Only Pilger could take one of the most peaceful periods in human history and turn it into the end of the world.

Pilger has been the master of the absurd since he decided to rewrite the history of WW11 to make the Japanese the victims.

    • @ Iceberg – Pilger “decided to rewrite the history of WW11 to make the Japanese the victims.”? Really? Seems to me he’s part of a fairly large body of politicians, military leaders, historians and commentators who have questioned the prevailing orthodoxy of WW2 history. Things like the ‘surprise attack’ on Pearl Harbour and the ‘necessity’ of dropping 2 atomic bombs on densely populated, non-military targets in Japan, vis –

      http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-real-reason-america-used-nuclear-weapons-against-japan-it-was-not-to-end-the-war-or-save-lives/5308192

I’m no Pilger expert but I’m inclined to believe he will be pretty much ‘on track’ regarding Western imperialism generally and uncovering details about specific events after the fact. It is very necessary for (so-called) ‘democracy’ to have voices like Pilger’s and Michael Moore’s.

My main reservations regard Pilger’s ‘predictions’ and his ‘marketing’. Does his WW3 theory coincide with the launch of a new book or release of a new film? Or with a crowd funding campaign to make a film? As it happens, yes, it seems it does. ‘The Coming War between America and China’, a feature documentary. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, lobbying of any kind depends on finance and funding. I’m happy for people to lobby for Peace.

Let’s hope he’s not correct about WW3? That its not a self-fulfilling prophecy? We should definitely be worried IMHO. We might begin by worrying about always prosthetising our Western selves as ‘the good guys’?

        • Well, Patupaiarehe, 😉 my good “fairy person”, 🙂 not worrying about ‘peace’ individually and world peace collectively has led to complacency and inaction, allowing the current situation to develop whereby we talk about “global free trade” and enact regional, sectarian, geopolitical Free Trade Agreements while blocs of nations surround each other, develop, threaten or use ever more heinous weapons and tactics, including so-called ‘terrorism’. Even the ‘Peace Movement’ has become ‘corporate’ rather than popular?

      The End is Nigh.

I knew people who were convinced that we were all going to die (either by natural disaster or nuclear bombs) when 1999 became 2000. One very sweet woman believed that a tidal wave would swamp us all then-it was very sad that she couldn’t really enjoy life because she ws convinced that the world was going to end in some awful way any day.

The Spratleys sit between offshore of the Philippines and Brunei with Vietnam across the straight from the Philippines. China is 500-600 miles to the north. Basically China is saying The Philippines have no rights to islands close to them nor do Brunei and the Islands are like 100-150 miles away from them.

China is pushing the boat out here. Its a typical Middle Kingdom play which they have tried on for the last 2500 years when ever they have an outward focus – they try to bully all the nearby and not so nearby countries of Eastern Asia….

And Pilger has had some interesting things to say but he has sipped so deeply of the Anti American kool aid over the last 30 years that he has become a parody of the Anti American Intellectual….

Moi aussi. French syntax is relatively similar to English. Maori syntax is very much more different. And many Maori words have multiple meanings depending on context and other words. I struggled with Latin and dropped it because it had such a different syntax. But the a e i o u vowel pronunciation helps greatly with pronunciation of Pasifika and Maori words when you read them.

I am told there is no stress on any syllables in Maori, so words like Pauatahanui (Paua ta ha nui) are now very easy to pronounce. I used to call it Patanui like every other pakeha I knew.

  7. Has a Third World War started? Pilger’s history is a different one to the one I subscribe to. His future is also very bleak, and his dismissal of human nature lacks true empathy with what most “normal” people think. It is a success that thus far, no nuclear exchange has occurred-despits some claims of use of mini-nuclear weapons in the Middle East. I subscribe very firmly to the idea that it doen’t matter so much about what you have got, it is how you use it that eallly counts – it applies to the military as well as on a daily basis.
I find also that even if you have Allies/Friends in the global contest for power, there is evidence that Shakespeare’s Tragedy Julius Caesar, still has modern application. E TU BRUTE is alive and doing well, as demonstrated by the Pakistan Intelligence Service funding the bombing attack on a US Military base un Afghanistan where 7 CIA agents were killed. The proof of this is shown in a heavily redacted document I have just received.
