It was confirmed today that talks are under way of a possible merger between Fairfax and NZME, two of New Zealand’s largest media companies and in control of many of the country’s newspapers.
I have concerns about this if it goes ahead. Monopoly media is not good for news, analysis or democracy.
And there’s talk that the pay wall stand off between the two will disappear so news will be by subscription. That’s the choice of companies but it will reduce access to a major chunk of news.
But on the lighter side:

/ 11th May 2016PATUPAIAREHE: New factsNZ : In Māori tradition patupaiarehe, also known as tūrehu and pakepakehā, were fairy-like creatures of the forests and mountain tops. Although they had some human attributes, patupaiarehe were regarded not as people but as supernatural beings (he iwi atua). Pake pakeha? Darimana kamu? Mugkin dari langitnya!

/ 12th May 2016I can’t now remember how many of a Maori family near us in Wanganui had fair hair, but if one hadn’t known that it was natural, one would have thought that the parents had dyed the children’s hair the oddest and most unnatural colour-it was a sort of dusty, pale yellow-brown. There’s a Maori man whom I know with hair that glints fiery red in the sun-it’s a very dark red by nature. Lucky sod. I have heard that this is prevalent somewhere-East Coast ?

I was in te Urewera a few years back, I was walking to the little lake and took many photos. When I got a few printed, there in the shot of te ngahere was a person of white reddish colour and of little statue, this I call patupaiarehe. I ask most that look at the photo tell me what you see and most with te wairutanga pouring out of their body all say Patupaiarehe.
Believe it or not.

/ 12th May 2016Reminds me of a funny story from a few years ago…..
A new apprentice had just started, and it was his job to take our smoko orders. So he dutifully went around the factory, and all went well until he got to Charlie…..
“Would you like anything from the shop Charlie?”
“Yup, tell Dorothy that Charlie wants a furburger.”
“Huh? What’s a furburger Charlie?”
“Charlie wants a furburger boy!!! Here’s five bucks, now piss off!”
So the poor boy did as he was told.
Fifteen minutes later, he’s back. Charlie’s paper bag has a big smileyface drawn on it under his name, and a nice hot fishburger inside.
The boy couldn’t understand why we thought it was so funny 😀

I don’t buy computers, my son builds them. If I wanted a webcam, I’d go get one off him & plug it in. And if I were to upload my perfect bum, I’d have to shave it first, to do it justice… 😀 😉
