At a rally protesting over two recent police shootings of black men snipers shot at police, killing 3, critically wounding another 3, 2 more are in surgery and 2 more were also hit (bacause the report says 10 were shot.

This substantially ramps up tensions in the US.

NZH: 10 police shot in Dallas protest, sniper at large

There is chaos in Dallas as ten police officers were shot at a protest over two recent fatal police shootings of black men.

Dallas Police Department Chief David Brown told WFAA-TV that 10 officers were shot by 2 snipers in downtown Dallas. Three are dead, 3 are critical, and 2 are in surgery.

“Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally,” Brown said.

“Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently underway. No suspects are in custody at this time.”

Another report says that at least 11 officers were hit.

At least 11 officers shot, 3 dead after attack at Dallas protest

DALLAS — Dallas Police Chief David Brown has confirmed at least 11 police officers were shot and at least three were killed in an attack by two snipers in downtown Dallas at a protest of officer-involved shootings across the country on Thursday night.

…bystander, Richard Adams, said the protest was “a lovely, peaceful march,” until they were walking down Commerce Street near the Bank of America building parking garage when he heard what sounded like “a bunch of firecrackers going off.”

“Everybody just stopped — ‘Run, run for your lives!’ Women with children and babies and everybody was chaotically running. And then, maybe I was a half-a-block away, calming down a little bit when we heard it again. […] There must have been five times tonight — whenever we thought we were safe, people said ‘Run, people were shot!'”

Dallas is notorious for a single shooting by sniper on 22 November 1963. That shocked the nation.

This will not only shock the nation, it risks exploding into something much bigger and more widespread.

A witness says that he heard 50-70 shots fired rapidly.

It’s hard on those officers, but I suppose that it was inevitable-that last shooting was cold-blooded murder.

    • It was inevitable that the shooting shown a day or so ago would cause problems but this escalates things substantially.

…-that last shooting was cold-blooded murder.
If it’s this one you mean, I haven’t looked into it, it doesn’t look good, it’s problematic that the policement say their body cams fell off, and that they have confiscated security cam footage—but I’m not entirely certain that it was cold-blooded murder, Kitty . We didn’t see everything.

But I do agree with you Kitty that this was inevitable. When everybody gets to carry guns, and when police officers shoot people who are running away, or children playing with toy guns, and other incidents where the officers seem to be in no immediate personal danger, and particularly when it is captured on cell cams nowadays—this was not only going to happen sooner or later, but I fear it will happen again.

OH. MY. GOD. He was licensed to carry a gun. He told the officer that and that he was just reaching for his driver’s licence. Oh Jesus. What is happening to the police officer?

CNN are reporting that Game Wardens are also assisting the police in their search for the suspects.

    Makes sense I guess…..

Two suspects reported in custody now? Horrendous, but far too many police killings in the US.

These suspects had better be black or we have a problem. Not too bright these boys. I believe Texas has the death penalty. Old Sparky might be resurrected especially for them.

This is what happens when the police forget who they are working for. They have become incompetent wannabes with all this SWAT bullshit and ignore the rule of law when it suits because they are hard to touch. They think that they have absolute power over citizens, can stop them randomly, pinch cash without any evidence of wrongdoing, search without any evidence of wrongdoing and generally act like the STASI. I’m now against our police carrying guns – they are no different here except they can’t resort to lethal force so easily (unless you are driving a van in traffic perhaps). I recall the good old days when the police couldn’t stop you without reasonable cause. Its about time for the police to return to protecting the citizens rather than harassing them. You can thank your politicians for eroding our reasonable freedoms.

Good way to put it Ugly Truth. They need to be reminded & encouraged to realise they are there to protect and serve us! Not to defend and protect themselves, or their system, when either of these do, or go, wrong.

G, this sort of reminds me of something that was bothering you a few days back, where the idiotic actions of a few might have had far larger consequences than any of them imagined, or even cared about

I see it hasn’t taken long for The Standard to blame the NRA. Wasn’t this the same Standard that was adamant that we shouldn’t rush to judgment when that Islamist went postal in a gay nightclub?

Anyway the latest is the attackers were ex vets, although since there hasn’t been a pattern of ex vet attacks on civilians we can’t say there is connection.

Watched live interview with Baton Rouge (Black) police chief on Al Jazeera 1 am. They killed one of the attackers with a bomb. Some footage of one of the shooters. Bloody sad. Bloody dangerous. Hope the lid’s not going to come off over there. There are a lot of people with guns & some of them are very angry.

Commentators on the Standard are quite consistent in criticising the NRA.There are allsorts of faux macho men here in NZ with gun fetishs’.Some even think shooting a deer in a fenced paddock is ‘sport’!

There is an excellent summary & discussion of the two recent shootings of black men by US police and the subsequent sniper attack on police on Al Jazeera right now.

Channel 16, on Freeview. “Inside Story”. It will be repeated at 7.30 and again at 11.30 tonight. I’m off to watch it.

The BR police used a robot with a bomb to kill the sniper, who didn’t want to surrender, and who told them all their shootings of black men made him want to kill white men, and particularly white policemen.

What is really tragic about this whole thing, is that the cops who he murdered probably weren’t bad racist bastards. In all likelihood, they were scared shitless, but were brave enough to turn up and attempt to keep the peace anyway. There are ‘bad apples’ in any large organisation, and they generally are a small minority.

That’s exactly what one of the three commenters on Al Jazeera, Channel 16, on Freeview. “Inside Story”.

This channel has international News Bulletins, one hour, followed by a half-hour summary, updated, every 2-3 hours I think, all day, every day.
They’ve even featured significant events in New Zealand. And the rugby & soccer internationals, but thank god, much shorter. They even have our weather forecasts for the country, and everywhere else’s, in very short segments.

It leaves anything we’ve got here for dead. 24/7. Anything major happening has commenters, intelligent ones, footage. The reporters are top class.

The presenters are too. All English speakers. Translations are provided, over-voiced, for anyone speaking in a video clip n a foreign language.

It’s based in Qatar, for 12 hrs, then they swap over to their newsroom in The Shard, London. It has a global audience. If it has any particular slant, it might be slightly Western-perspective. But it tells me more about what’s happening in the world than anything else I see here.

If it isn’t shown here when I post it, you click on “Add Channels”, then back to “From Now”:

Agreed P. They were probably good family men who, like all cops, are trained to go towards danger on or off duty, while we get to sit on the sidelines and pontificate on their failings. My daughter’s on the front line in South Auckland and at 23 yrs she has already seen more shit than we will get to see in a lifetime. Cheers, c

Much respect to her Conspiratoor, that would have to be one of the more challenging neighbourhoods to police. As much as I whinge about revenue gathering, I couldn’t be a cop. They spend every day not only dealing with the dregs of society, but also witnessing the horrific aftermath of a moments inattention on our roads.

Johnson was the sole sniper. Veteran, several years in the Reserves. Served in Afghanistan. Personal arsenal of weapons found at home. Included bomb-making equipment, notes on tactics. Member of the New Black Panthers (whatever that is).
