Olympics – McCartney bronze!

Eliza McCartney has won the bronze medal in the pole vault, equalling her New Zealand record of 4.8 metres.

The women’s hockey team lost their game for bronze against Germany 1-2.

The women’s K4 500m kayak won their semi final to make the final which will be early tomorrow morning.

Quentin Rew got 11the in a field of 80 in the men’s 50 km walk.

Trent Jones crashed in his second semifinal race in the BMX, coming in 7th and was also 7th in his third race putting him out of contention. He had ridden to 3rd in the first race.

Most of my interest has been in third day of women’s golf. Lydia Ko came into the round quite a way off the pace but had a day best round of 6 under (which included a hole in one) to rise to 2nd equal near the end of the round, putting her right into medal contention.

But Inbee Park is 3 shots better playing the last hole. A number of other leading players had difficult days.

UPDATE: Park bogied the last hole to finish on 11 under for a two shot lead.

It will be interesting to see how Eliza McCartney goes in the pole vault final later this morning (11:30 am).

Nikki Hamblyn will run in the women’s 5000 m at 12:40 pm.

From yesterday, Tom Walsh topped off a five medal day for New Zealand, getting a shot put bronze that he looks very pleased with.

This adds up to a record 15 medals for New Zealand. So far.

Eliza just cleared her personal best of 4.8 m first attempt!

Five others still in the contest but no one else has cleared 4.8 yet so she is starting to look like a genuine medal chance.

Two cleared 4.85 and Eliza missed on three attempts, but so did two others so she claims the bronze!

Now 16 medals.

  2. Eliza McCartney has made a great start to the pole vault, she has cleared her first three attempts, the latest at 4.7 m which is near her best. Three of the 12 contestants have dropped out so far at lower heights.

This is another sport I enjoy watching. Absorbing.

  3. Tom Walsh was awesome! And so was the younger Jacko Gill who competed off the back of foot injury incurred 6 weeks ago. Both lads have a lot of upside potential….

So we now have 3 world class shot putters when you add in Queen Val. How good is that?!!!

I hope Val continues on as she will get better as her injuries settle post surgery over the last couple of years.

  4. Eliza is a real medal chance. I think unless at least three others clear a higher height and she doesn’t then she will have a medal. There’s only four left in the running.

Am I mistaken in thinking that on a per capita basis NZ has won more than the US ? They have 105 and we have 15 so far.

Yes, but what about us and the US ?

We have 1/7 as many medals but we don’t have anything like 1/7 of their population.

They are, what, 90x our population in rough figures ?

More like 80. So they should have 1200 medals or we should have 1.33, depending on which way one does it to make it the same.

I had to laugh when Ellen tweeted me this last week…..*the look on Usane Bolt’s face*…… it reminded me of the old *Jolly Nigger Moneybox* we had a few years ago…..you know those one’s where you put a coin in the hand, push the lever and it goes into his mouth…..never see them around much these days XD

Now for some reason, it looks like Ellen’s gone and deleted it ❓

None, of course. I don’t use Twitter and then think that famous people really are my friends because I’m one of the thousands of people who are sent tweets from their accounts. I’d know that they had no idea who I was and were not sending me a personal message.
