I lost some of my enthusiasm when these would go on the railway line at the bottom of the garden in our last house. The whole place would shake as if there was an earthquake, the smoke was terrible and the whistle deafening. So was the noise, These look great in films, but I am very glad that I live in the days of diesel trains. Our Angora rabbits didn’t mind the ordinary trains, but when the steam one passed, they were terrified. No wonder it was only the slums that were near the railway lines when it was steam trains. I can’t remember how often the old steam train is taken out, but it’s no fun to be living near one-it must have been terrible when these were the only trains.

“Rimutaka Prison director Chris Burns had apologised, but was powerless to remove photos taken inside prison walls. Burns … in a written statement, said the department was dependent on Facebook to remove the photos “illegally taken within a prison”, and “it could take some time for this to be actioned”.

It’s nice the director wants Facebook to deal with illegalities. It would be nice if Facebook had no illegalities to deal with because the director had dealt with them earlier.

Some politician in Germany wants it to be against the law to call vegetarian sausages (and other things) by that name because it’s confusing and unsettling for consumers. Yes, it’s very confusing to have a vegetarian sausage so called-what COULD be in it ?. I see little point in ‘vegetarian meatballs’ as a name-why not vegeballs ?-but it’s surely obvious that vegetarian sausages, schnitzels etc are made with vegetables. I wonder what he thinks of names like rock cakes, Brighton rock, jelly babies, squashed fly biscuits, cream crackers, marshmallow eggs, glazed carrots, Eskimo pies, jelly beans (neither beans nor jelly), toad in the hole, chocolate fish, angels on horseback, doughnuts…
