If I seem grumpy today and upset any wusses with some ill-mannered or incautious remark I apologise in advance but accept no responsibility for it because it’s basically patu’s fault.
Thank you. That is all. 0615 hours.

One tries one’s hardest Missy, but when one finds one’s internet acquaintance shamelessly exploiting one’s good manners & addiction to guitar music into the early hours of the morning, one struggles with achievement. I know you witnessed this shabby behaviour & hope I can count on your support.

Yet another ‘slur on my good character’. I expect this from Alan, but not from you G. Pardon me for not being here 6:30am yesterday morning, I was pre-occupied with brushing my teeth, & eating breakfast. After doing so, I drove down the road to my workplace, where I spent 8 hours, earning around $250. The funny (or not funny) thing is, that less than $200 ended up in my pocket.
I hope you appreciate my efforts, G…

Yes Al that was very good rebuttal of how farmers are ‘the’ only ones polluting our waterways. Made very good sense I gotta say.
reminds me of this saying … If you haven’t changed your age old opinions lately,
check ya pulse you might be Dead.

      Reply
    • I’ve gotta agree with Possum about the article Alan. Well written … Good comebacks.

Not just farmers but all humans are the ones polluting our waterways (and environment) because humans, as sentient beings, are responsible not only for their own pollution, but for all the cows’ pollution too …

Lumsden’s been a little bit selective with some of his ‘facts’ though. Let’s examine –

” … over her lifetime, she [the woman] would pass as much pee and poo as a cow because she would probably live 11 times longer.”

I infer from this that in any given year a cow pees and poos 11 times more than a person.

“Our 6.4 million dairy cows only drink …. compared with 4.5 million people ….”

So, in any given year, evacuating at 11 times the rate of a human, 6.4 million dairy cows produce pee and poo THE EQUIVALENT OF 70 MILLION PEOPLE!? This piss and shit has gotta go somewhere …

“Daisy I said, will spread her waste naturally on the soil where it will be filtered and used by plants.”

Well, not exactly, since “the soil” is not just soil but is intimately connected to waterways via the water table, seepage, aquafers, run-off and our surface creek, stream and river systems … and this soil has limits to how much shit it can “filter” and make available to plants …

” … Daisy who lives a toxin-free lifestyle, consumes few resources, and discharges a pittance of what humans do into our environment?”

We’ve already debunked the “discharge” half of this statement. The toxin-free part also may not be strictly true. On other than organically certified properties, Dairy cows are drenched regularly … We’d need to know Daisy’s drenching regime …

The cows are only putting back on the land what they ate off the land, PZ. Why should that be a problem to recycle? If there is a problem it is probably excessive fertiliser application, not the poor old cows who are getting the blame.

        Reply
        • Orh … Alan … the poor old cows eh? Each one nothing more than a benign, self-contained, sustainable unit of grass consumption and shit production?

There’s milk in there somewhere too.
Is that added to the grass or subtracted from the shit?

Sorry, it doesn’t wash. Not when there’s 6.9 million of them today occupying the same [available] space that 2 million did 1955 – 75, 4 million in 1995 and 5 million in 2005 …

Fertilizer too Alan, yes … also … as well … in addition to … This has already reached overload …

When do we reach livestock overload …?

I don’t care whether you think it doesn’t wash or not. The cows eat grass and drink water. That’s all. Then they crap and piss it back onto that same land minus a bit of milk. No reason it can’t just cycle as good old nature always does and always has.

I see 5000 high producing dairy cows are off to China on our Saudi mates ships. This guy’s got a history with sheep so only 4000 will be alive on arrival. But never mind that. Watch for China’s dairy herd to grow exponentially in the next 10 years and our markets to dry up faster than a jersey in a Northland summer. Bill and muzz have rooted the US market. Third world here we come. I despair

The flip-side is not recognising your own competitive advantage and lagging behind the rest of the globalised world, as with cannabis …

It does not in any way logically follow that a desire to decrease the world’s population means actively killing people … NOT AT ALL …

People would only have to voluntarily reduce reproduction or ‘fertility’ rates throughout some [significant] portion of the world and allow natural deaths to exceed chosen births for world population to decline over time …

His Grace has posted a few links that require close scrutiny because they’re probably to subversive liberal-flavoured articles based on slt-right alternative facts that need to be utterly debunked in lengthy discussions consisting of a multitude of ridiculously short paragraphs & utilising devilishly clever entrapment strategies.

  10. @PG. kiwi in America has an excellent series of articles on Obama’s presidency over at kiwiblog. You’ve possibly read them.

    Excerpt.

    “Ukraine and Russia

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton kicked off an ignominious start to the Obama Administration’s Russia policy with the infamous Russian reset. What did this ‘reset’ result in:

    Scrapping the placement of US missile defense systems in Poland and Czech Republic to pacify Putin;Standing by while Russia annexed Crimea and invaded eastern Ukraine;
    No consequences for Russia despite the revelations that Russian backed Ukrainian separatists were identified as the source of the missile that downed Malaysian Airlines MH 17 over the Ukraine killing 298 innocent civilians (including a Belgian friend of mine who had previously been a long-time resident of Queenstown);
Allowing Russia a free hand to expand its influence in the Middle East all the while letting Syria’s Assad off the hook.
Of even greater significance has been Russia’s stepped up cyber incursions into sensitive US government computer servers. Russian hacks into US military, intelligence and government servers have been extensive, ongoing and potentially damaging and yet the Obama Administration appears to have done little to prevent it or hold Russia accountable UNTIL it appeared that Russia was behind hacks into the Democrat National Committee computer (where emails showing the DNC skewered the Democrat primary in Hillary Clinton’s favor) and the leak of Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta’s emails (that showed high level Democrats dissing key parts of their base). Suddenly, these incursions were worthy of action with Obama announcing some sanctions and travel bans on Russian government official.”

He has written well on Israel, Iran and the ME in general, but way too long to put in here. I’d be interested in your take on it.

  11. If KiA has anything to do with framing Obama’s legacy, it’s not looking good

“The total withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq sent a signal to Islamic jihadist forces to do no more than wait out the US withdrawal. This vacuum and uncertainty allowed ISIS to take root and spread. Since ISIS’s expansion in Iraq and now Syria, Obama did the bare minimum to contain it almost going through the motions, his Administration has not been fully engaged in defeating ISIS. It ignored or downplayed intelligence that pointed to its rapid rise and Obama was foolish in his public dismissal of ISIS calling it the JV team (JV = Junior Varsity, the US equivalent of the 2nd XV in rugby) not wanting to cast any shadow on his decision to completely exit Iraq and the good political optics of ending an unpopular war. Obama was handed a war that had been won (he said it, Biden said it, Petraeus said it), a reasonably pacified US ally and some good things were finally happening in Iraq. He ignored military advice that said that a total withdrawal would lead to an even more unstable and fragmented Iraq”
