MediaWatch

Media Watch is a focus on New Zealand media, blogs and social media. You can post any items of interested related to media.

A primary aim here is to hold media to account in the political arena. A credible and questioning media is an essential part of a healthy democracy.

A general guideline – post opinion on or excerpts from and links to blog posts or comments of interest, whether they are praise, criticism, pointing out issues or sharing useful information.

As usual avoid anything that could cause any legal issues such as potential defamation or breaching suppression orders. Also remember that keeping things civil, legal and factual is more effective and harder to argue against or discredit.

Sometimes other blogs get irate if their material is highlighted elsewhere but the Internet is specifically designed to share and repeat information and anyone who comments or puts anything into a public forum should be aware that it could be republished elsewhere (but please include attribution).

That tireless self-promoter Jacinda Ardern managed to get two Herald journalists to write articles about her over the weekend. In the Canvas article she trots out that old chestnut about being more than just her good looks ( she would be if she had done anything of substance since she has been in politics), and in the NZH Focus article she is bizarrely described as one of New Zealand’s most beloved young politicians ( perhaps the journalist is referencing the view of whatever urban liberal echo chamber she inhabits). The Labour Party couldn’t have had more supportive puff pieces like this written about their Mt Albert by-election candidate even if they had paid for it. Makes you wonder if the other candidate in the Mt Albert by-election, Julie Ann Genter is going to get similar supportive treatment by The Herald.

One would have thought that being a tireless self-promoter would have been an admiral and essential quality in a political candidate. There are obviously overt and covert, subtle and less so strategies of course.

Aljazeera TV New reports US forces have killed 14 Al Qaeda terrorists in an operation in Yemen, the first one carried out with The DOTUS’s authorisation. One US soldier has been killed. They advise that reports from the area say 30 people were killed, 3 of them children.

The report I read said a drone hit the house of an Al Qaeda leader and the commandos then landed and killed everyone in the house but it seems the departure got messed up when a US plane crash-landed and a gun fight broke out with other terrorists.

It’s all getting very messy. Jabhat Fateh al-Sham formerly known as the al-Nusra Front has been attacking about 3 other opposition forces in Syria, including the Free Syrian Army which, if there is one force that might be claimed to have some legitimacy, is that one. While the DOTUS is going to focus on ISIS, it looks like everyone can leave the others to destroy themselves.

Thank goodness there’s a world of difference btween a hard landing @ Welly Airport & a US ‘hard landing’ in Yemen.

Or even a soft one. I recall landing in Dubai and seeing a ring of white clothed men sitting with their machine guns surrounding the plane. It made me feel a whole lot better about Welly’s weather.

Wendy on 1Ewes (back on screen & looking lovely – the presenters are always so well-dressed & hairstyled, & the newsroom is so much better designed & well-lit, than with that other mob) only told the US version: 14 Terrorsts dead, didn’t mention any other deaths or casualties other than 1 dead & 3 wounded among Mad Dog’s Marines. Showed what looked like short clips from file footage of green-lit night-fighting-equipped troops, & a hovering V-22 Osprey somewhere, mentioning that one of their aircraft was destroyed to stop it falling into enemy hands. Why don’t they ever mention the number of collateral damage deaths? I think these are quite important to what’s going on with why people join these terrorist groups.

A bit of hyperbole you would be proud of, G. His relationship with McCain is going to be a fun thing for the next four years. They might have to declare demilitarised zone between them with UN peace-keepers.

Love the pic. Will you be getting this one framed and hung in the laundry Alan?

Will have a read of the rest now. Let you know if I have any thoughts.

Whoops. The Gezza posted in the wrong place. See above, with pic. Soz. Probably not paying enough attention.

“Trump also instructed Mattis to initiate a review of the country’s nuclear posture to ensure that the nuclear arsenal is ‘modern, robust, flexible, resilient, ready and appropriately tailored to deter 21st century threats and deter our allies.'”

Last 3 words are a bit odd. How many enemies do you think he’s planning to make?

If they’re going to be chucking away an Osprey every few missions Mattis might want to look at whether it’s worth the bother of using something novel that’s really just an over-expensive toy and stick with something more bog standard & utilitarian.
