Hey, look, I get up early every morning after never even going to bed & put quality time & effort into selecting Trumpy’s best tweets from overnight for everybody’s viewing pleasure. Plus, lately, a bit of relevant commentary if any seems appropriate. And frankly, by 1240 hours, to have scored only two upticks for me efforts is a bit poor!

      Just saying. 😕

“Bearing what he said was a message from President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence told anxious European political and security leaders on Saturday that “the United States of America strongly supports NATO and will be unwavering in our commitment to this trans-Atlantic alliance.”

But while offering that assurance to European partners alarmed by Mr. Trump’s rise, along with some tough words on Russia and Ukraine, Mr. Pence also warned that Europe must increase its military spending in a dangerous world, saying, ‘As you keep faith with us, under President Trump, we will always keep faith with you.’

The NATO treaty demands not only collective defense but a vow to “contribute our fair share to our common defense,” Mr. Pence, making his first overseas trip as vice president, said at an annual security conference here.

‘That pledge has gone unfulfilled for too many for too long, and erodes the very foundation of our alliance,’ Mr. Pence said. He echoed an early theme of Mr. Trump, who has said he believes that America’s allies have taken advantage of American largess and not paid their fair share.

‘Europe’s defense requires your commitment as much as ours,’ Mr. Pence said.

Applause for Mr. Pence’s speech was thin. Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who spoke before the vice president, argued that increases in military spending must be gradual to be efficient and effective.

A senior White House foreign policy adviser, speaking under traditional ground rules requiring anonymity, said that Mr. Pence wanted to send a message of reassurance as well as obligation, both here and in Brussels, where he will meet with European Union and NATO officials on Monday.

Part of that message was strong words on Russia, even as Europeans wonder about the admiration Mr. Trump has shown for Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin.

Mr. Pence vowed that the United States would “hold Russia accountable, even as we search for new common ground which, as you know, President Trump believes can be found.” He said the United States would hold Russia to its commitments in the Minsk accords to reach a permanent cease-fire in eastern Ukraine so political reforms could proceed.”

Aljazeera 6am TV News featured a couple of short video clips of Mr Pence delivering his address. He looked & sounded a consumate statesman. I would describe their coverage as short, factual, & positive.

I might see if I can find the full speech later, Alan. They didn’t show enough of it but what I did see suggested he’ll fill a very important role, or at least he should. He looked like a pro at this job, on point, articulate, so a good man to front for a job like the one he was there to do.

How does Trump reconcile using foreign workers himself and having his merchandise made in China with hire/buy American ? His followers must be either ignorant or gullible/

The Ivanka range is disappointing-very ordinary, chainstore, polyester type of clothes. The ones I saw were not as well made as what Farmers sells here.

They were not, they were the real thing. All the Trump stuff is made in China or Indonesia. It’s a case of do that which I say, not that which I do.

If people were selling knockoffs with the Trump name on them, the Trumps would take action very quickly, and fair enough, too. Trump has admitted that his things are made there-he could hardly do otherwise, really. He makes all sorts of excuses, of course, it’s not that he’s greedy to make a profit..

    @ 12:34pm

I’ve just watched Trumpy’s *yuge rally* in Melbourne FL on Fox…..it was absolutely compulsive viewing ❗

Can anyone here *honestly say*, that in the last 8 years, they actually tuned in on a daily basis to watch anything to do with *Pres Obama* …..or his missus ❓

    I love this quote from The Guardian about the Pence speech to NATO;

“Instead, he left some of his European allies confused and alarmed, angry at being chastised for failing to pull their weight in the defence alliance, and concerned that too little attention is being paid to the future of the European Union.”

The Europeans are butt-hurt about it being pointed out they are not spending anything like they should on defense and all upset that discussion in NATO isn’t about the EU.

This is going to be fun!

The burden sharing debate about NATO and the US has been going on since the 1970’s.

It looks like the actually doing something about it is starting in the 2017s.

That’s funny. The actual funding of ‘NATO’ is the costs of the headquaters and a very small amount of operational assets, mostly the AWACs. This is largely meaningless in a military alliance.

When it comes to actual military capacity, the vast amount comes from the US.

            So much for fact checking….

            • Alan Wilkinson

               /  February 19, 2017

Expecting objective fact checking from WaPo is a triumph of hope over experience.

      • David

         /  February 19, 2017

In the 70’s most European countries had some actual military capacity. That’s long gone and what is left is largely inoperable, or unable to deploy anywhere useful. Just one example is the German Airforce serviceability is as low as 10% and that’s on the much reduced numbers in their fleet.

An article about Hungary, but as they say – all political discourse is about DT, so he gets a fair mention in there:

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11803667

Hungary’s young Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto said “The international media has been so unfair to him,” he said. “If Hillary Clinton said the same things as Donald Trump is saying now, she would be celebrated by the liberal international media.”

Today I looked at racks of gear emblazoned with the names and logos of American basketball and football teams. The were all made in Vietnam or China.

Today I walked past an empty factory that used to make zips, and bias binding that had to close as there wasn’t a market left for them after manufacture of NZ clothing shifted to China.

Why would anyone want to wear those garments ?

          • duperez

             /  February 19, 2017

Wear American sports garments? Surely we all do or soon will. Isn’t that part of globalisation? We can all sit around at McDonalds in our American gear talking about how great it is that the USA has a President who is going to put a stop to it all. It annoys me when the really ardent ones go on so long I miss the start of the NBA or AFL game on tv. 😎

               /  February 20, 2017

I don’t, I see no point in paying to advertise a team that I will never see from another country (I never see any sports teams, now that I come to think of it-the last time that I saw a match was when I was at school and had no choice). Globalisation may be the US’s policy, but never, never, never will I surrender to it !!! 😦 😦 😦

It looks very silly when people wear garments promoting such things-and when they wear garments with the logos of universities that they have never been to, or even seen. Or whose countries they have been to, in some cases.

More on the war between the bureaucracy and the Trump administration:

Trump will have to defeat the bureaucracy before he can defeat the media.
