at least he’s not a warmongering hawk like Hillary…. oh wait…trump’s seeking a USD54bn hike in spending on tanks, ships and weapons systems … priorities include rebuilding the military and restoring nuclear capabilities

So where’s the funding coming from? Cutting foreign aid, environmental programmes and domestic agencies. i.e ransacking American jobs and families to gear up for war

American already spends more on “defense” than the next 7 countries combined and already has the largest military infrastructure by far. So much for trumps campaign complaints about costly wars and the waste of money that military activities represent.

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”

It’ll generate more jobs & stimulate some state economies, but global military deployments & force projection is notoriously costly so Even if NATO defaulters are bludgeoned into upping their defence spend to 2% of GDP – as they are required to – this could be a medium term drain on the US economy. All the more so if they embark on any more military adventures.

This is an incentive for calculated risk takers to prod America into lots of little police actions around the world – in Ukraine, the mid-east, asia, eurasia (afghanista, pakistan) & africa.

Not only are they going to embark – they are going to win for a change!
It’s all part of MAGA. It’s part of his stimulus package.
I believe he is interviewing potential candidates for invasion already.

Either that or he is trying to undo the foreign policy morass that Obama created. Obama went with lots of ‘red lines’ that if crossed led to more red lines that you had better not cross – or he had to make another red line, but with thicker pen!

It will be interesting to see how he balances increased military spending with his stated desire to not be the worlds police.

He also wants other nations to pay a higher share of shared defense and for foreign nations with US bases to help pay for them.

But if it makes Joe feel better, here are his thoughts on diplomacy:

“I believe that the key to striking a deal is persuasion, not power. Persuasion is diplomacy at its best-the ability to convince people to accept your ideas. You don’t want to force people to accept your ideas. That’s a recipe for disaster. Instead, you want them to think that the decision was theirs, which gives them a greater sense of power and control. Your objectives should be to make your adversaries feel like they’re your partners, not your victims. Present your ideas in a way that will not intimidate your adversaries or make them feel that they are being forced to surrender. In successful negotiations, all parties should feel satisfied with the outcome.”

Trump is sending a message that soft-cock military options beloved by liberal drips like Obama are off the table should anyone want to mess with Uncle Sam. Trump will need to be careful though because getting his budget wrong could have America bankrupt on paper and in reality.

He should start on his inner city projects. Getting that right would bring much kudos, more so than any military budget.

He probably doesn’t think so-it would have nothing like so much free publicity for him.

This is a case of being careful about what you ask for.

PS: Sorry about late reports. Gorgeous summer weather at last has resulted in major operations being undertaken against green force insurgencies in Backyard & Frontyard Provinces in recent days, plus some provincial reconstruction work. Operations continue today. 💪 👍

  4. From a G W Bush interview:

“We need an independent media to hold people like me to account”.

“Power can be very addictive, and it can be corrosive. And it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere.”

a couple of links to interesting commentary from from Michael Kimmel, one of the world’s foremost experts on the aggrieved entitlement felt by angry white men who are outraged at their declining societal status. Highly relevant to trumpist America:

Milo Yiannopoulos is basically a provocateur. He wants to provoke a reaction so that he can claim victim status. “Oh my God, they won’t let me speak. These people on college campuses are whining all the time.” Meanwhile, he is doing most of the whining. He is very like Trump: “Everybody hates me, I’m a victim of the bad media, I got more votes than she did.”

What he (Yiannopolous) wants to do is provoke a censorious reaction so he can say the left is equally censorious as the right. But in this country, that has not been the case. We have a long history of censoring free speech and that history has always come from the right. And this notion that the left is all so angry and censorious … it depends on ignoring one small technical detail: the left is not in power right now. The left does not have the power to be censorious.

For certain American men, is Trump kind of a fantasy figure — an uber-male who is so rich and powerful he can indulge every desire, sexual and otherwise?
I think so. Many of these guys feel that the current order of things has emasculated them, by which I mean it has taken away their ability to support a family and have great life. Here’s a guy who says: “I can build anything I want. I can do anything I want. I can have the women I want.” They’re going, “This guy is awesome!”

They see a clear path to the American dream as their birthright, and are furious to find it is blocked by a toll booth (entrance fee: one college degree), and crowded with new competitors — immigrants, people of color, and liberated women. Who gave them permission to get in line? What we’re witnessing now is a very loud last gasp of unquestioned, unchallenged male entitlement,

He’s a sociologist so I guess he needs some leeway for talking complete and utter crap.

But both of those excerpts are wonderful examples of straw man arguments and ad hom attacks.

This is what they think and this is why they are wrong!
