MediaWatch

Media Watch is a focus on New Zealand media, blogs and social media. You can post any items of interested related to media.

A primary aim here is to hold media to account in the political arena. A credible and questioning media is an essential part of a healthy democracy.

A general guideline – post opinion on or excerpts from and links to blog posts or comments of interest, whether they are praise, criticism, pointing out issues or sharing useful information.

As usual avoid anything that could cause any legal issues such as potential defamation or breaching suppression orders. Also remember that keeping things civil, legal and factual is more effective and harder to argue against or discredit.

SB has done an anti-abortion post on WO. As a woman this makes me really angry, her whole argument is flawed, and she writes it in a way to try and manipulate the reader by subtly putting her viewpoint in but crossing it out to make it look like it was wrong.

This is an emotional, but important argument. Good to see one commenter actually taking the opposite view.

As Evan says, the choice to have an abortion comes with the choice to not have an abortion.

For SB to say that pro-choice is only about the choice to have an abortion is wrong, and quite frankly insulting.

I am firmly pro-choice, and firmly of the belief that two or three people are the only one’s to make the decision around abortion – the woman, her doctor, and the baby’s father possibly depending on the relationship with the mother.

Yup…agree with you *99%* on this Missy – other than it should be *totally* the woman’s choice ❗

        Fair Call Nelly.

I do believe that the doctor should have some input, I was a bit unclear – the doctor should not tell the woman what to do, but if it is a case of life and death the doctor should recommend the best course of action, even if it is abortion.

As for the father of the baby, that is dependent on circumstances, but if a woman is in a relationship the father should definitely be involved in the decision, in other situations it should be up to the mother to decide if the father of the baby has a say or not.

But in the end, yes, the woman should have the final say.

Funnily enough Nelly, the apprentice at work was having a laugh at lunchtime yesterday, about ‘Spark’ sending him a text, offering him a chance to win tickets to Justin Bieber. I opined that perhaps he should take them up on the offer, since there would likely be more than a few single young ladies there. His response…
“Fuck off old man! I’m not interested in twelve year olds…” 😀
