UK & Europe – Trump meets Merkel

UK-EU

Topics about the UK, EU and Europe.

From Gezza:

The White House has assured the UK Government it will not repeat allegations that GCHQ spied on Donald Trump, in a bid to avoid a major diplomatic row.

Downing Street said it had told members of Mr Trump’s team that the allegations were “ridiculous” and should be “ignored”, after the claims were repeated by White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Theresa May’s official spokesman would not confirm whether the administration had offered an apology, but did indicate Mr Spicer had been told not to raise the claims again.”

my apologies for my delayed presence, I spent the afternoon with a colleague putting together some Ikea furniture! That was a fun unofficial team building activity.

Though, looks like Gezza has hit on one of the main stories from today. 🙂

How dumb is our media? They tried to highlight contradictions in Trumps stance on Germany. They stated during the election campaign Trump lambasted Germany’s immigration policy, now he is praising their Labour force practices as superb. Only if you have been to New Zealand journalism school does that contradiction become apparent.

A Poll done for the Telegraph shows that Brexit is more important to people in Britain than retaining the Union.

The Majority of people are against Scotland becoming independent (59%), however a slight increase on that (59.9%) think Brexit is more important than the break up of the Union. A smidgen over 50% (50.5%) would still vote Brexit even knowing it could lead to the break up of the Union, and 58.5% believe that holding a second Scottish referendum prior to Brexit would undermine the UK’s ability to negotiate with the EU.

The SNP are still talking about holding a referendum, but if they hold one without Westminster’s okay it could cause embarrassment as constitutional issues are not in the authority of Holyrood.

Also, Theresa May has challenged Nicola Sturgeon to win a majority in the 2021 elections to show she has a mandate for a second referendum, essentially putting off a second referendum for up to 6 years.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that a second man was shot and a third escaped.

Reports are also saying that the airport is being searched for explosives.

Cheers G, I was out this morning, but saw that on the way home so was going to post it when I got back.

Note also, this happened hours before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were due to meet victims of terror attacks in Paris and Nice. Not sure if there is a link.

“The man, a known figure to French police and intelligence officials, had earlier in the day opened fire on a police officer during an identity check in the northern Paris suburb of Garges-les-Gonesse, according to Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux.
Then, Paris police said, he stole a woman’s car at gunpoint. It was found near Orly.

Police did not immediately provide a motive or identify the attacker, though the Paris prosecutor’s office said he was 39 and had a record of robbery and drug offenses.

The office said he did not appear in a French government database of people considered potential threats to national security.

The prosecutor’s office said its anti-terrorism division was handling the investigation and had taken the attacker’s father and brother into custody for questioning.”
