World watch

Wednesday GMT

What’s worthy of saying about the world, say it here.

There’s a lot of things happening of interest around the world, from the Brexit split between the United Kingdom and the European Union to Donald Trump’s young presidency in the United States, from the civil war in Syria and the associated surrounding Middle East mess, to growing tensions around North Korea and China.

Post here what you think may be of interest to others or could be worth discussing. Some topics may be transferred to separate posts.

The Lions team for the tour of NZ has been announced.

No Dylan Hartley, making him the third successive England captain to miss out on a Lions Tour.

Good Morning PDT, you are up early. I didn’t realise you were a Dylan Hartley fan, it must be very disappointing not having him in the Lions team to tour. Personally I am not much of a fan of his, but for you to downtick a statement of fact about Dylan Hartley being missed out of the team you must be a huge fan and suffering such a big disappointment. Can I recommend a tub of ice cream (yes even for breakfast) to get over such a disappointment, it usually works (that or wine, but I think wine for breakfast just makes you an alcoholic).

Parties are already talking potential coalitions in order to keep the Conservatives out of power.

Liberal Democrats have ruled out going into coalition with Labour, but not with the Conservatives. That may be a problem with those voters they lost in 2015 who felt betrayed by their coalition with the Conservatives.

The SNP has said that they will seek a ‘progressive alliance’ with Labour and the Liberal Democrats. This presents 2 problems, the first is that it was the thought of a coalition or alliance between Labour and the SNP that is thought to have given the Conservatives the outright majority in 2015, the second is that the Liberal Democrats have already ruled out working with Labour so I am not sure why Nicola Sturgeon thinks that they will for her.

Further update to the ‘coalition discussions’.

Jeremy Corbyn has ruled out any coalition with the SNP, saying they run a right wing Government behind left wing rhetoric, and that they had no genuine interest in helping to run the UK as a whole.

So, Lib Dems don’t want a coalition with Labour, Labour doesn’t want a coalition with the SNP, but the SNP seem to think that they can form a coalition with both the Lib Dems and Labour.

    Um…where are we?
A US aircraft carrier and other warships did not sail towards North Korea – but went in the opposite direction, it has emerged.
The US Navy said on 8 April that the Carl Vinson strike group was travelling to the Korean peninsula amid tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.
Last week President Trump said an “armada” was being sent.
But the group was actually farther away over the weekend, moving through the Sunda Strait into the Indian Ocean.
The US military’s Pacific Command said on Tuesday that it had cancelled a port visit to Perth, but had completed previously scheduled training with Australia off its northwest coast after departing Singapore on 8 April.
The strike group was now “proceeding to the Western Pacific as ordered”.

To be fair though Patricia…..this POTUS has made it *abundantly clear* that they are no longer going to signal their intentions to the enemy, like the pussy-footing Obama Administration always did. I mean, just ask *Syria & Afghanistan* if they had any idea what was heading their way…..

      MAGA. MASA.

      • It would help if they learnt to signal their intentions to each other though.

They are acting like a cluster bomb of buffoons.

You could be right Nelly. Who knows? That’s the thing about Trump, if there’s a stuff-up he can always maintain it was deliberate.
