Video on demand to be censored?

The retiring Chief Censor seems to be bit peeved that the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why was available to view on demand without needing to be classified by the censor.

The Government say they are going to try to legislate to tighten things up on video  on demand, but I don’t know how it will work. Age restrictions would be futile. Slapping a rating on shows would barely make any difference if at all.

RNZ: Law to regulate video-on-demand likely later this year

The government says it hopes to introduce legislation to regulate video-on-demand broadcasting later this year.

The retiring Chief Censor, Andrew Jakk, has called for urgent action to regulate the new forms of broadcasting such as Netflix.

Deputy Chief Censor Jared Mullen recently said Netflix was able to circumvent the censorship office to air controversial show 13 Reasons Why, which showed a need for the law to be clarified.

The censor’s office classification of the show would come nearly a month after it was released.

I don’t follow this. Being an offshore provider of video I think that Netflix simply wasn’t required to have anything classified.  Or did they have to but didn’t need to wait until it was classified. That would be bizarre.

The government announced it would introduce legislation on the issue last August, but hasn’t yet done so.

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister, Maggie Barry, said the government intends to introduce the law change this year and refer it to a select committee.

She said the work had been complex, as the law needed to be future-proofed to allow for technological changes in the future.

Ms Barry said the new law would still exclude user-generated content and print media from regulation.

Print media are regulated by an industry body, the Press Council.

So user generated videos via Youtube, Facebook and many others will be excluded but commercial videos would have to be passed by the censor. Good luck with that.

What about live streaming which is becoming more common?

Video is easily available from around the world from many sources, trying to censor some of it must be of very questionable effectiveness.

I don’t know how they’re going to deal with this so that it is effective and fair.

I don’t have Netflix or anything like that, so it won’t affect me. If people with that sort of mind want to watch porn and violence that badly, they will get it somehow, I suppose; it’s wishful thinking to hope that they won’t.

Kitty,a good movie has measured amounts of violence and porn. I will not watch a movie unless someone is leaded, and the leading lady is rogered.

      • Should read “good violence and porn has measured amounts of movie” Miss Kitty …

              Bashar Assad aka murderous tyrant
Liz aka Queenie … corgi, horse loving, waving machine.
According to Corky “They say you grow like the people you associate with…..Blazer.”
Does that mean Assad will love corgi’s and Liz will be a tyrant?
Does Corky even know what that whooshing sound was.

I prefer not to watch people having sex; it’s not meant to be a spectator sport. Why does a good film need to have porn in it ? Porn by definition is actual sex acts. complete with genitalia on show. We’d better not arrange to go to a film together.:D

Don’t think your gonna find the message in the bottle tonight Miss.
Is Porn and Violence the reason this movie is getting a the Chief Censor nuts in a twist?

The film 13 Reasons Why is about a young girls journey … 13 episodes of how a girl was raped bullied and finally committed suicide. 13 people that by 6 degrees help shape her life,
It was made for a female audience.
I presume to help other girls find their voice, and to persevere.

“She visits Mr. Porter, the school guidance counselor, and tells him about her rape, without admitting who was the responsible. Mr. Porter implies that she has no chances of being taken seriously and insists that she continue with her life as if it never happened.”

Why I am wondering is a film with a message for young girls be called to be classified, when the usual content you can find on-line has no message at all apart from RIP it Up!!!!

    • Sounds like the kind of show that goes way beyond ‘entertainment’, titilation, appeal to baseness and ‘escapism’ Possum?

It must have really got to our retiring Chief Censor for him to want to censor it on our behalf … ?

“a frank, authentically affecting portrait of what it feels like to be young, lost and too fragile for the world”

“a honorably mature piece of young-adult adaptation”, calling its peformances, direction, relevance and maturity as some of the show’s strongest points

Jesse Schedeen of IGN praised 13 Reasons Why, giving it a 9.2 out of 10, “Amazing”, stating that the show is “a very powerful and hard-hitting series” and “ranks among the best high school dramas of the 21st century”

Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe gave a glowing review for the show, saying that “the drama is sensitive, consistently engaging, and, most importantly, unblinking”.

Therapy dogs were present on set for the actors because of the intense and emotional content of the series.

IMHO the retiring chief censor was a complete and utter jerk who should have been retired before he took the job. But that’s just me. However this latest excretion from him does nothing to alter my opinion of him.

I watched the 13 Reasons and thought it was a great show – Selena Gomez went up in my estimation of her as it was her baby. Still she did date Justin Beiber so she was starting off a pretty low base.
