French presidential election

I presume the result of the 2017 French presidential election will be known some time tomorrow, Monday New Zealand time (thanks Missy, I confused the date and time difference).

Opinion polls had Emmanuel Macron well ahead of Marine Le Pen, probably too far to close up but as they say, the only poll that matters is the election.

This post will be updated as information becomes available.

Guardian: French warned not to publish Emmanuel Macron leaks

France’s electoral commission warned media and internet users that they could face criminal prosecution for publishing documents obtained in a “massive and coordinated hacking attack” on the presidential frontrunner Emmanuel Macron’s political movement.

The commission, which held an emergency meeting to discuss the leak, said some of the documents appeared to contain “false information”.

Thousands of internal En Marche! (On the Move!) documents were published on the internet an hour before the Friday midnight deadline for the start of a campaign blackout, meaning neither Macron nor his far-right Front National rival Marine Le Pen was allowed to respond.

France’s presidential electoral authority, the CNCCEP, asked the media to avoid transmitting information from the leaked documents and reminded them of their responsibilities given the “seriousness of the election”.

Vote is 7 May, but for some reason they don’t allow campaigning the day before as well as day of, which could be why Pete thought the vote was today. They are French after all.

Aljaz tv reports wikileaks has provided a link to the leaked Macron documents, apparently with a note that they include fake documents. So much for their claims of careful checking & virtuous intent. 😡

Wikileaks have never done careful checking of anything they have released, not too different to Snowden and his enablers in the media.

Could be politcal strategy to just say there are fake ones in there just to discredit and get ahead of the eventual embarrasment.
Given the dodginess of the French who knows.

I would imagine Macron will win, the French establishment will breath a sigh of relief and France will continue with its economic decline. The EU machine will once again claim it as their victory as they did in Holland and continue their arrogant march towards an inevitable collapse.
Macron has no party and has been high up in the Hollande disaster so I would guess he will be as unpopular as Hollande in about 12 months time when people see nothing has changed.

Pretty much sums up what the situation will be.

The EU took the unprecedented step the other day of endorsing Macron, breaking the protocol of staying out of nation elections.

Macron,s marriage is weird too, imagine if the genders were reversed. He still behaves like some love struck 15 year old boy towards her, creeps me out a little bit to be honest.

You are not the only one it creeps out.

The whole relationship is just weird.

At the beginning of the week Sarah Vine wrote a column on it for the Mail, saying the way they got together is disturbing. She brings up how much has been made of the fact that their age difference is the same as Trump and Melania’s, however, as she points out, Melania was not 15 when they got together – if she had been Trump would never have been able to run for president.

Irrelevant to the point being made regarding the age difference, and ages of them when they got together.

And I think you under estimate Melania by suggesting she is an accessory.

I don’t really think so trav. The French seem to unusually tolerant of unusual or “illicit” liaisons & romantic relationships. I’ve always put it down to the wine or perhaps the garlic. What is more likely to dog him perhaps might will be accusations that, like Petain, he basically agreed to surrender to the Germans without much of a fight & to govern France on their behalf. 😉

G, that is very similar to the sentiments of Le Pen earlier this week when she said regardless of the outcome of the vote France will be ruled by a woman, either her or Merkel.

Yes, I understand that, but I still think that. Perhaps I will chsnge my mind when she comes out of her current stint of mothering duty, although I note that that is a no go area even for the most critical of the anti-Trump “fake news’ media.. It’s not really that important. There is only one person of supreme importance in that household & that family.

One could equally argue that the age difference in Mcron’s case is irrelevant because, well, they’re French. 🙂

Not at all. I have several children and have never infatalised them or anyone in my acquaintance. I was sexually active early enough and have had multiple relationships, covering the age spectrum, to refer to. I. believe that the dynamic of a 39 year old having an affair with a 15 year old is unusual, if not unnatural and the power imbalance is extreme. First there’s the sex, the child has no experience while the other (24 years the senior) can indeed groom and mould a person to his/her sexual preference. It’s a bit like running and missing out crawling and walking bit. I need not go into further detail.

Alan reading your comments here are rather disturbing.

It is not okay for a teacher – of either gender – to enter, or contemplate, a relationship with a student, there is a power imbalance in the relationship and it is morally wrong.

It is not infantilising children to say that it is wrong for a 39 year old to have a relationship with a teenager, it is only saying it is wrong for a 39 year old to have a relationship with a teenager, and in particular for a teacher to have a relationship with a student.

Please explain how saying someone in a position of trust, who is essentially in loco parentis, is right to have a relationship with a child, albeit a child of 15.

A 15 year old experimenting with someone their own age, or within a couple of years of them, is fine, and I say let them, within the law and their own moral guidelines, as long as their is no coercion or force. However, a 15 year old with a 39 year old is morally wrong. That is not infantilising children.

And note that in France, despite the age of consent being 15, it is illegal for an adult to engage in sexual activity with a minor of 15, 16, 17, and also for anyone who has legal authority over the victim.
