Q+A: the influence of technology giants

Thirty years ago IBM was the technology giant. Then with the advent of micro computers – personal and business computers – Microsoft took over as the dominant technology company.

The Internet has changed things markedly this century. Now some of the most dominant technology companies harnessed the Internet and now dominate revenue, marketing, news and opinion.

The internet is the best example of the human race.
A system designed with altruistic motive based on a free exchange of ideas and information.
To be taken over by those whose only motive is “there must be a buck to be made somewhere.”

The thing that’s struck me is how quickly it got wrecked by crims & vandals.

  2. The Net Neutrality fight being a pertinent case in point. I have no doubt that the cloud will lead to a massive consolidation of business and government applications under a small number of technology giants simply because the onus has shifted from software being customised to client needs to clients adjusting their practices to the cloud offering. This means the big boys can be a lot more agile and don’t get stuck supporting a million older versions of their software.
