McCarten statement on interns

Matt McCarten has put out a statement on the interns on student visas issue:

In May this year my contract with the Labour Party ended and I left to run a programme called the Campaign for Change. The programme was supported by the Labour Party in Auckland, however I led and managed it.

This programme involved an international volunteer programme with a focus on voter enrolment, working with trade unions, student groups and churches.

Volunteers would also have the opportunity to work on local political campaigns, and a number of them did volunteer to help with Labour campaigns in Auckland.

The programme was extremely popular and quickly became oversubscribed. The scale of the programme is now greater than I can manage, and I am aware of issues that this has caused.

Earlier this week the Labour Party Head Office contacted me about these issues and requested to take the programme over so that it could resolve them. I have agreed to this and am no longer involved in the programme.

My intention from the start has been to give young people a positive experience in the New Zealand political system and I regret that the programme has not lived up to this promise for all volunteers.

I will be making no further comment.

That leaves a number of key questions unanswered.

They should get some advice from Joseph Parker about what to do when the opposition is on the ropes.

This doesn’t make sense – this is a long time Labour-run initiative as shown in this overseas advert dated 24th Feb: https://umichpicsannouncements.wordpress.com/2017/02/24/labour-party-campaign-fellowship-in-new-zealand/

The contact for the advert is Labour Party organizer Caitlin Johnson:https://nz.linkedin.com/in/caitlin-johnson-b26a8671

It promises in other adverts access/talks from Andrew Little, Jacinda, the Labour president, Chief of staff and Aunty Helen – so they were all onboard.

Where’s all the people here from a couple of days ago saying National were the dishonest ones? Your silence is deafening…….

God you think people would learn ! 🙄

Didn’t someone else famous – who used to be a golfing buddy of The Trumpster before embarking with his missus on a killing spree & life of traitorousness, treachery & crime (according to our resident military expert) – have no end of trouble with an intern ? 🤔

        “Have a cigar.
You’re gonna go far, you’re gonna fly high,
You’re never gonna die, you’re gonna make it if you try; they’re gonna love you.” – Pink Floyd

I note that Stuff’s reporting of this issue has no comments section.
Had this been National the article would be front and centre with comments on giving Blazer plenty of opportunity to use many of his persona to rip into National on all the fronts that are on offer with this story.
Of course the rule is its OK if Labour do it.

Sadly Blazer has been away since news broke – his cloak of hypocrisy was going to struggle to deflect away this turn of events.

It came up in Question Time today. The Big Fulla, filling in for their Big Guy (who was MIA along with the Police Minister) mentioned it. I expect it will probably surface again next week. Should be a right old Battle Of The Bilges next week.

One thing seems certain, buddy. We’re probably all in for a rollicking old time of it up right until the September election. Might not make it any easier deciding which particular lot of dodgy characters should end up controlling the legislature, but it looks like we’ll be hugely entertained. 😕

Labour are going to get some stick every time they talk about poor housing & living conditions, not paying a living wage, and stopping overseas students coming into the country.
