All Blacks v Lions, 1st test

Crunch time for the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions tonight as when they meet in the first of three tests in Auckland.

I’m looking forward to this game more than most, due to the difficulty in predicting a winner, and due to the novelty of Lions tours – they come here every 12 years so their last tour was in 2005.

The All Blacks haven’t been beaten at Eden Park this century – their last loss there was in 1994. They have been hard to beat anywhere in the world, but the Irish showed that it can be done last year when they played in Chicago.

They had a romp against Samoa last week but should be game hardened through the players involvement in the Super competition.

The Lions had a mixed start to their tour but have improved and have won their last two games. They will be very strong in the forwards, and are expected to kick ahead a lot to keep things in front of their pack.

It may be wet which may favour the Lions a bit but the All Blacks should be ready to deal with the conditions.

I think it’s anyone’s game, and I’m happy to put them at 50/50 odds.

Roll on 7:35.

A ripping first half. The ABs have put on a lot of pressure and got points but the Lions came back with a top try running it from inside their 22.

Halftime 13-8 to the ABs.

Great game, ABs too strong in the middle of the second half, the Lions came back to score on full time but too little, too late.

Final score 30-15.

  1. if you really think its 50-50 ,get down to the tab, Lions paying $4.20 to win

      😉

    • I don’t bet on sport. Amongst other things it would spoil the occasion thinking about the money.

I hope the All Blacks will win of course, so betting against them would be a clash of loyaltiy,

  2. Fiji beat Scotland 27-22 in Suva. That’s a big change from last week when Scotland beat Australia.

The excitement about the Game is item one on 1ewes at 6 plus one.

Melissa Stokes is shrieking the news as anchor tonite.

Apparently, the “agonising wait” for the whole of New Zealand to see “the match between the team comprising the best of the Irish & the best of the English, that was last here twelve years ago, and the current World Champions, is nearly ova”. 😕

    • She didn’t mention the best of the Welsh?

Actually she might’ve said the best of the British, not the English. I had my hands over my ears because of the shrieking.

How have you handled the agony, PG? Panadol?

          • I avoid drugs apart from a bit of alcohol every now and then.

An absorbing game. ABs to strong, the Lions were good in patches but struggle to lift their game consistently.

But anything could happen next week, the Lions are capable but have to put it all together and keep the ABs under pressure.

No gambling or drugs? Thank goodness for the university students then.

The Lions keep dropping the ball or fumbling when near the line. I told wifey that if their their passes stick they will score tries and I think last night showed that. In my view the game was closer than the score indicates.

  4. Phew. Relief in this house. The Poms just couldn’t finish anything. See our boys saying they’d never played in such an intense game. SJW compared it to State of Origin.

As an aside. What about Moses McKay, the anthem singer!! Brilliant. I’m all for keeping the good ones for the big games rather than spreading it around. Hate to have to listen to the discordant Muzak shocker Marvelly came up with at the Māori game.

I need to check the news for the final score. I watched delayed coverage on Prime. But I shouldn’t have grabbed a hottie – I was asleep in 10 minutes. (No not that kind of hottie, I wouldn’t been asleep in 10 minutes with kind of hottie.)

you are letting your politics colour your opinion.Marvelly is a fantastic singer of the..anthem.

I can’t believe I am going to say this but you are not too far off with that statement Blazer. Lizzie Marvelly is better than most female singers singing the anthem, (especially Hayley Westenra), at least she doesn’t screech it out in a high pitched voice. I still prefer to hear a male singing it myself, and I thought Moses MacKay did a pretty good job, but in recent times my favourite has been (and still is) Nick Afoa doing it A cappella.

      • In your opinion. I’m not a fan of her sort of voice or the way she delivers an anthem

  5. Impressive second half from the big boys upfront in Black. Got over the gain line consistently, scrummaged well against a supposedly superior scrum [though next week will be different with a French referee no doubt] and smashed in at the breakdown. Lovely close support running and passing by the AB forwards all game – coming back in close and nullifying the rush defence the Lions rush to cut down space wider…

Lions had an edge at lineout simply because our throwing in is not good enough – the timing and placement of the throw is not right evidenced by a few not straights and over throws but also by the number of times the jumper was reaching left/right/forward for the ball instead of straight up. Taylor and Harris need to do a lot of work – Coles gets raps for his loose play but its his line out work which is most missed I think.

Defensively we were poor first half and that great Williams try is something Read won’t want to see too often – he over committed on the first attempt on the Welsh fullback Williams which created the whole opportunity…

I pick the AB’s by 11-20 as I thought we would mow them down in the last 25 minutes, but I didn’t expect the Lions to be so good with ball in hand.

Next test will be a cracker – desperate Lions with a French ref will go a bit closer to containing the AB’s; penalties will flow, slowing the game down which will suit the Lions. Still think the AB’s will win but by 8-12… maybe even closer if its a real stop start game…

    Always Beat on Black!

      Bet on Black?
Beating on Black is what the Lions supporters tried before the game.
