Mission Metiria continued

Metiria Turei has been in interviewed on RNZ this morning, and was pressed on a number of questions about her past benefit and electoral frauds.

This interview will get some scrutiny.

One comment that stood out was when Turei was pushed on her own circumstances where she wasn’t exactly unsupported by family and in extreme poverty.

She said something like ‘I made a decision to have as much financial stability as possible’.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei has hit out at opponents outside the party, after the party reached a compromise with two dissenting MPs.

Kennedy Graham and David Clendon had threatened to resign unless she stepped down as co-leader, saying they objected to her stance on benefit fraud.

Mrs Turei has admitted lying to Work and Income as a solo mother in the 1990s and, while acknowledging what she did was wrong, she has refused to condemn others forced into the same position.

Dr Graham and Mr Clendon have withdrawn from the party’s caucus and, while they will stay as MPs for now, they will not seek re-election in September.

Metiria Turei joined Morning Report‘s Susie Ferguson in the Wellington studio:

It is legitimate to question how ‘forced to lie to feed her child’ Turei was, or whether it was more if a lifestyle choice at the expense of taxpayers.

  1. “I made a decision to have as much financial stability as possible”

The series of decisions she made strikes at the very heart of the nature of theft.

    Needed are:

    Motivation
    Opportunity
    Lack of a gatekeeper

Under Turei’s values ( and it’s looking more like those of her friends and family), the system was up for gaming and game it they did. Their sort of people ain’t my sort of people.

She was and still is willing to justify her theft by employing what looks to the rest of NZ like misplaced victimhood, as an excuse. This is entirely about her flawed character and an inflated, unjustified sense of entitlement, not a broken system.

“Financial stability”? What a spectacularly ghastly woman she is.

Something, perhaps you’ve never had to worry. …about. Your criteria for theft is flawed btw. ..gatekeepers can be neutralized.

FYI, there are moral absolutists across all of society, including the dirt poor. Relative wealth or poverty does not influence your morality when it comes to theft. This was never a loaf of bread stolen by an eight year old being sent to the colonies. It was an adult bring given free accomodation, free education, free pocket money, money from private sources, never working a day, lying, cheating and stealing from her neighbours. She and her supporters take a broad view of the word I simply call theft.

Yep. What staggers me is that once caught she continued to claim black is white, right is wrong and so on. She is deluded to extent you could right a book on delusion based on her perceptions.

In a society with a social safety net, people who steal without necessity are criminals by choice, not necessity.

MT made a choice to steal from us, not, as she claimed, because she had to, but because she wanted and chose to make “a decision to have as much financial stability as possible”. irrespective of her entitlement, with disregard for both the tax payer and those suffering legitimate hardship.

There is a difference between stealing bread to feed your children and stealing cake after someone has given you the bread for your children.

That crossed my mind, too, but if it is true, it’s not very flattering to Maori students. And, while she passed her degree exams, most who get in this way are set up to fail, as I would be if I was let to take a degree in mathematics.

Of course, her rise from being a shopworker (or whatever it was) to being a lawyer may also be a lot of nonsense.

Her entire interview presentation is replete with the body language and micro-expressions of someone lying, yet who believes that what she is saying is actually the truth.

This isn’t a politician defending a position – this is a person with an embedded personality disorder, and possibly a sociopathically driven one at that.

How has this venal woman been able to achieve a leadership role?

    This article may give a clue;

  3. Interesting story on Stuff today, where Turei makes some startling comments:

Asked what hard working people who paid their taxes might think, Turei said: “Some of them will judge, and I understand that, and they won’t accept what I’ve done.

“What I hope that they will do is understand how difficult it can be and to have some compassion for the people who are suffering for that right now,” Turei said.

She said she was grateful to her broader family for supporting her in order to make it possible for her to get her law degree and have a “pathway out of welfare”.

Asked why she found it necessary to rip off the benefit while getting support from her wider family, Turei said she had made a decision to have as much financial stability as she could.

“You have to be careful,” she said. Work and Income considered a range of things as income “and they will cut your benefit if they know about it.”

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/95589050/wiser-to-pay-back-benefit-fraud-income-before-going-public–metiria-turei

So she’s now acknowledging that she had family support, and has more or less dismissed the notion she was a starving mum with a starving child with the “as much financial stability as she could” comment. That completely contradicts her poverty narrative, and is likely to upset some of those who have gone out on a limb to sympathise with her.

The other thing she doesn’t seem to realise is that it is people like her gaming the system that results in WINZ bringing in punitive measures to act as a disincentive to benefit fraud. On that, she is hoist by her own petard.

As policing whether beneficiaries are working under the table, living in a relationship or taking in flatmates is difficult, the lower level of benefit may allow for some of these to be occurring. The cost of keeping on top of the above may out weigh any savings obtained.

I am of the view she is just an over-inflated weather balloon & that the polls will see her come down earth much deflated, as eventually happens with all weather ballons. But, we’ll see, I guess.

I listened to her interview and gleaned that she took a lot of other people’s stories of hardship and rolled them into her own to paint a picture that justified what she had done. The story she told was fake because if she had told her own it would not have made the impact that she wanted. Rather than tell of all the support she had she told a lie fo impact. As mentioned above she has dug a hole and is furiously now digging further to see if the folk on the other side of the world will believe her

    • I call utter BS on that English situation. Simon Wilson (famous for pimping the poor) fails to acknowledge that up until Government House had 50 million spent on it at the end of the last Labour Government, a succession of Dep PM and certainly the last one to him had lived in a Government residence gratis. He should have had Vogel House, but it was commandeered for the Gov General. The last tenant in Vogel House was Jim Anderson and it was tradition that Deputy PMs were traditionally given a house to live in.

One thing to add – we don’t know the Newshub poll result yet so we’re guessing its bad but Turei reckoned it wasn’t “that bad”. However any drop to single fingers from where they were – 13 to 15 per cent – is bad.
