The white male problem

It’s becoming increasingly common to see criticisms and attacks on people and their opinions because they appear to be white and male.

This was rife this week in relation to the Metiria Turei issue. Some portrayed it as an attack on female Maori solo mothers and any white male was an enemy to be condemned and excluded from the ‘conversation’ promoted by Turei.

It was misguided – when Green MPs Kennedy Graham and David Clendon made a stand on principles and ethics they were abused, and I saw a number of attacks along the lines of ‘good riddance to white males’. Clendon happens to be tangata whenua.

‘White male’ generalisations have been increasing for some time. I February Catriona Maclennan wrote:  Beware the terms men use to maintain power

There is no such thing as identity politics. The term is used by white men seeking to hold on to their power and deny the human rights of Maori, Pasifika, women and LGBTQ people.

Human history is the history of male domination and, primarily, of white male domination. Black and brown people, women and LGBTQ people have been prevented by law, custom and outright physical force from accessing political power, jobs, votes and resources.

Groups which have suffered legalised discrimination for centuries are increasingly fighting for full human rights and equal treatment. This has angered white men, who are determined to hang on to their power. One of their weapons is language, and that is why the term “identity politics” has gained such currency.

The following is a brief dictionary to assist those who find dealing with the language of the genus white male confusing.

“Broad church” – a phrase commonly used in relation to political parties. It means white men should retain control of all the key positions in the party.

“Merit” – a subjective criterion which holds that traits displayed by white men are the most desirable qualities in job applicants and political candidates. Once women and non-Pakeha acquire the prescribed qualifications and experience, the goalposts are shifted to say other qualities they do not possess are vital to the role.

“Political correctness” – any move to protect the human rights of anyone other than white men. Epitomised by the supporters of United States President Donald Trump who have reportedly assaulted women since his election win because “political correctness” no longer applies.

“Racial or gender quota” – a plainly unfair device to deprive white men of their pre-ordained right to the overwhelming majority of top jobs and political positions.

“Shrill”, “screeching”, “shrieking” and “screaming” – words applied exclusively to women engaging in political debate. The men who use these terms are under the misapprehension it is February 1817, rather than February 2017.

• Catriona MacLennan is a barrister and former press gallery journalist.

MacLennan is correct about some white males, but she is discriminating against many others.

A white male has just written:  Play the ball not the man

Personally, I’ve pretty much had a gutsful with arguments and ad hominem attacks that treat an opinion as less valid because the person expressing it happens to be… a white male. Yes, folks, run screaming into the hills right now. But, I have read stories, opinion pieces and countless social media posts criticising people’s ideas, where this argument raises its head solely as a means of discrediting someone’s point of view.

My recent experience of this was in relation to an opinion I wrote about Metiria Turei. In my case, criticism it seemed to be based on an assumption that as a white male, I apparently come from a position of privilege and so can’t possibly relate to the plight of someone like Turei. So I was therefore not sufficiently qualified to have an opinion.

This becoming common.

This outlook is not only short-sighted but a potent combination of sexism and racism. And in the case of the latter, not in the way that you might think.

Firstly, on the question of gender, while I can’t speak for everyone, I want to point out the bleeding obvious. There isn’t a secret club (at least not that I am a member of) where all white males get together to plot the downfall and subjugation of anyone who doesn’t resemble us.

Secondly, there is something particularly odious about the suggestion that the colour of your skin disqualifies your right to have an opinion on certain issues in New Zealand. In seeking to defend Turei, for instance, one writer made the point that the white male enjoys among other things “a wide network of social and family connections and support”.

This is in my view a shameful generalisation. At its worst it arguably implies that other ethnicities, largely, do not enjoy such benefits.

Generalisations aren’t new, it just happens that ‘white male’ has become a popular one – and an unpopular one, but mainly amongst white males and they’re dirt now so that doesn’t matter.

Creating a generalised minority as an enemy is a poor way of promoting better rights for other minorities.

‘European’ is the biggest ethnic group on New Zealand, making up about 74% of the population – 2013 Census QuickStats about national highlights

About half of them will be male, and not all of them will be ‘white’, so white males will be somewhere around a third of the population. That’s still a significant proportion but that proportion will be shrinking.

However within that third there is a very diverse bunch of males. Most of us have never been in positions of power either.

It is one of the most common criticisms here.

The most recent cry of ‘white male’ was when the judge for the Grenfell enquiry was appointed, he was accused of not being able to do a good job because he wouldn’t be able to understand the residents and their concerns due to being too white, too male, and too privileged. Sadly – and to a degree quite alarmingly – this was begun by, and exacerbated by a Labour MP who said that it should be a judge who was BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) and even better a woman BAME judge.

Statistics in the UK show that the most disadvantaged in education are white working class boys, in Scotland that group are least likely to attend University despite the fact that the policy of abolishing University Fees was meant to increase the numbers of working class students into University (working class girls are also least likely to go to University).

I agree. The ‘women’s movement’ is largely an excuse to be self-indulgent and infinitely worse than men. There are few good role models around but most are ‘pretend men’.

There was a time when people argued for women to be more involved to create a more ‘decent’ society. I’d like to see their evidence for having achieved any of it. They’re more than equal – they’ve taken every male fault (including being controlling) and every form of unthinking and uncritical gender prejudice and multiplied it geometrically, as their ‘right’.

Anne, I think from your second sentence that you may have interpreted my comment about the Labour MP as it being a female MP, in fact it was a male MP – David Lammy (a twat).

However, beyond that I agree with what you have said. 30 years ago I considered myself a feminist – I was young and finding political thought at high school (before the days of being influenced by Lefty teachers), but when I look at today’s ‘feminists’ it is not something I identify with. As you say, they are self indulgent.

Some of my best friends are white males. A strange bunch. But no stranger than any other demographic you care to name.

Of course they tend to have more money and power than other demographics.

    Case solved.

  3. I have to say that I’m very partial to a man, white or otherwise. If he’s mad on travel he’s a given. If he loves animals and humans – in that order , conducts himself with integrity and has a SOH, a sharp intellect, tolerates this week’s Spotify playlist at full belt “Say yeah” ( Acoustic Alchemy), a Novidade ( Ivete Sangalo), Ganesha (Deepak Ram) and “Grazing in the grass ( Hugh Masakela), that’s even better!

Any white bloke who dares opinion without genuflecting and the requisite qualifying prostration at the feet of the PC coven is “racist, privileged and women hating”. These epithets are boring, lazy and shallow. They cannot begin to frame a conversation, that though well worth having, pushes so many good voices underground and renders many of them mute.

Shutting down dissenting voices while screeching your own platitudes from the only piece of moral high ground real estate allowed does nothing to advance a cause. Those who disagree will still disagree, only they’ll be far more resolute and immovable within their silent world. I’m not saying capitulate to the Uber lords, but lumping all the goodies in with the baddies is hardly logical, reasonable or compelling.

Twitter is not the real world.

This piece is right on target. Sadly, much of the public debate in New Zealand at the moment is characterized by rant and dogma. This has proven to be an effective technique to silence many of those who would counsel caution about a too rapid shift in cultural norms.
A small point perhaps, but the learned lady commentator has seemingly escaped the inescapable: the vast majority of men in the world are not white.

Rumor has it that your lefty dictator mates salted away plenty while they were resting from killing those they didn’t like the look of. Arrafat was loaded in Switzerland. Castro the same and the Soviet elite were never scratching around for more cabbage soup. Africa is full of petty tyrants that rule with an iron fist and I suspect that they are not white. Turei didn’t live in abject poverty because she was young, untalented and brown. She rose to the top of a stunted bush and even at that was over promoted. Her colour and gender weren’t the problem, it was her morals and complete ineptitude.

It is one of the most common criticisms here.
But even more disturbing has been emergence in the past weeks of a kind of punitive, vindictive, mean-spirited media gang led by primarily privileged white men who have no idea what it means to live in a level of poverty that many in this country exist in every day. This is a media pack with a focus in the election year on destroying a Māori woman leader, Metiria Turei, for something she did as a young single parent mother. And like any other pack they have been driven to collectively hunt and devour. These entitled white male journalists have been relentless in their desire to affirm their pack behaviour and to prove that they are rightfully engaging in acts of journalism. They are asking questions, they are probing, they are seeking answers. And some of them even speak with lulled voices that give an illusion that they give a shit. When they don’t.

Thiel has invested in NZ tech firms, including Xero, and I understand some start ups.

In the case of Xero what this means is that instead of being a Medium sized NZ domestic company they have been able to expand to Austrlalia, US, and UK. Xero are in fact one of the fastest growing tech firms currently in the UK.

I’m so thankful to you for promoting Leonie Pihama’s blog here, I would probably never have come across it otherwise. Later in the article you quoted, she gets to the heart of the matter:
“What we have is a clear attack that is grounded in the fundamental right wing ideologies of race, gender and class that serve the interests of domination and which reproduce systems of inequality and disparities. Metiria Turei embodies all of those things that white supremacy seeks to destroy. She is Māori, she is a woman, she has been on a single parent benefit and she has done all she needed to do for herself and her child to survive, to live and to flourish. For many, she has beaten the odds and in any other context she would be considered the model of what we aspire all single parents on benefits to experience. However, in this context she is a direct challenge to the existing order. Metiria Turei has for many years shown that she can lead a party that can take down this right wing neoliberal government. She has been a threat for years, and she will remain a threat for many more. She is powerful and all of those in power, and those that hold privilege, recognise that. So, Metiria Turei does not get the opportunity to pay back the benefit and keep her leadership role, the way that Bill English got to pay back the $32k he took knowingly and through a technical loophole and then become Prime Minister. Metiria Turei does not get let off for voting in an electorate she didn’t live in the way that John Key was let off for standing in an electorate he never lived in, and become Prime Minister.”

You go first -> acknowledge the appalling comments functionality of the site you own and run, that makes it all but impossible to follow any strand of argument beyond a few meager reply posts – and this on a site ostensibly about encouraging in depth, robust debate on complex issues.

Then list what improvements your developer team came up with when you discussed the issue with them, along with a timeline of when said improvements will be implemented.

Then I will acknowledge I failed to navigate your unnecessarily complicated, impossible to track, cross eyed inducing comments functionality.

              Deal?

            • You have to be joking.

In case you’re not, no deal. You stuffed up, made false assumptions (something you have done often), and then try to blame it on me. And you wonder why I can’t trust you to comment without moderation.

You have posted another four comments, some continuing your whining and excuse making.

              Here’s the deal. You apologise.

              you are just like John Wayne…’I don’t mind a..thief…but I can’t stand..a liar’!

      • “Metiria Turei has for many years shown that she can lead a party that can take down this right wing neoliberal government”.

This is my new favourite quote. Ignoring the fact that a chance would be a fine thing on the “Right wing neoliberal” count (If only!), the fact remains that if you show you can do something “for many years”, but don’t actually do it… chances are you actually can’t?

She also questioned why middle-class white men were often the ones chosen to comment on the issue.

“I don’t want to hear any ‘white guy reckons’ because my girls are hurt by this. All those reckons, what they’re saying to my girls, the girls hear it very clearly – and they’re living in misery and pain.”

In response to Sorethumb… I think that my sense of outrage at Ms Turei’s transgression is more related to her recent behavior. Way back when, although her child was supported by two grandmothers, her unnamed father and several of Turei’s flatmates, Turei felt entitled to put her hand out for a solo mother’s benefit for a number of years. This benefit income was apparently devoted to having fun (her own words). But that was then. Now, she has had the benefit of completing an under-graduate Law degree, nine years in Parliament, plus several more in which to grow up; yet still she feels no sense of guilt or shame. That moral vacuum is what renders her unfit for public office.

“Human history is the history of male domination and, primarily, of white male domination”

If men have always been the winners for all of human history, how can anyone claim men and females are equal in strength and ability as Equalists claim?

After all females are the majority of the population, but by their own admission have had their butts handed to them by Team Men – EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Claims of matriarchal societies ( freakish remote mountain tribes or clans ) are dodgy if not out right Feminist intellectual fraud. But even being generous and allowing for those handful of sad paltry examples, doesn’t change the reality of male dominance.

    • You’re way behind the times if you think males should continue to dominate females, males should own females, males should assault females at will.

The modern western world is moving towards a much more gender equal society. Most people in New Zealand are quite happy with this in general.

We are moving to a more “gender equal” society the way communist societies move towards are more “equal” society. In other words not at all. The red lights are starting to flash in more and more white guys minds as they see the rising level of visceral hatred for their kind.

There is no example of a successful civilization built and dominated by females. Please explain Pete, if you believe there is no meaningful difference between males and females in terms of ability?

        • There is a meaningful difference in the ability of Jacinda Ardern compared to the four males who preceded her as Labour leader.

That a minority of females who want to dominate males and are out of step with the majority of people in our 21st century society is no surprise and no different to a small minority of males who think that should be able to dominate females.

Can you give any example of a successful civilisation built without females?
