TRP Adviser 11 August 2017

This week we learned many things.

Bill English is donkey deep in the Todd Barclay affair, Labour have their mojo back and it’s all about me me Metiria.

The revelations that Bill English was texting his former electorate secretary hundreds of times in the lead up to her resignation was bad enough. Now we learn that English unlawfully destroyed the incriminating texts, presumably to avoid public opprobrium.

It seems likely that Winston Peters has some or all of the communications and is going to drip feed them over the next few weeks. He’s going to let English squirm and fret. That’s as it should be, because forcing someone to resign against their will is appalling behaviour.

In the legal trade, that’s known as a constructive dismissal. It’s when someone of power and authority makes life so miserable for an employee that they have no reasonable alternative but to resign.

At least that’s what I hope English was up to with his txt torrent. It’d be truly awful if, as some people have suggested, he was a sex pest. No, that simply can’t be true.

The latest polls have Labour riding high. They’re back up to the giddy heights of the mid thirties, a place that was only a few years ago the death knell for former leaders Shearer and Cunliffe.

There’s a sad irony that a mediocre result is a cause for celebration, but kudos to Andrew Little for allowing this to happen. The Jacinda Affect is real. But will it be sustained? And after the Greens implosion, will the coalition numbers still stack up, even with NZ First’s support?

This has been a chastening week for the Greens. The initial response to Metiria Turei’s admission that she was a benefit fraudster was a leap in support. There was clear public sympathy for her claimed circumstances, but as her story unravelled, that faded fast.

It was political madness to alienate middle class support. The Greens don’t exist without the money and votes of the relatively well off. Trying to rebrand the party as mana with muesli was always going to come at a cost.

The maths simply don’t add up. The beneficiaries Metiria was pitching to are notoriously hard to get enrolled, let alone to get to vote. The gain was always going to be minimal and the potential downside catastrophic.

In short, Meteria Turei’s attempt to be down with the kids has cost her and two other MP’s their jobs. Because they will know struggle to get to double figures, she’s also cost 4 or 5 list candidates seats in parliament as well.

And still she won’t apologise. That’s weird, because she’s going to be doing a lot of apologising in private in the coming weeks. Mainly to the wider family of her child, who she has effectively cast as uncaring and distant.

One last question I haven’t heard asked in the media. Was James Shaw aware of the content of her speech? If he did and was supportive of it, he should also go, because the polling is not their only problem. They’ve effectively given Winston Peters the right to demand they be left out of cabinet if Labour form the next Government.

That’s the real damage me me Metiria has done.

” It’d be truly awful if, as some people have suggested, he was a sex pest. No, that simply can’t be true.” Nice work TRP.

Hey, Te Reo Putake – got something to back that up? Or you just another sleazebag doing a typical leftie muck rack?

Seriously Pete George – you decry this sort of approach over at WOBH, but you let it in here?

All you have stated is that Bill English sent texts to a woman he has known for a very long time (and hence would be good friends with) OVER A PERIOD OF A YEAR & at a time she & he was knee deep in the Barclay saga. If a lot of those texts were particularly long they would count as multiple texts.

There is no facts at all to accuse English of being a ‘sex pest’ – my example of you similarly had zero evidence & regardless you said that statement of TRP’s was ‘dismissing any sexual innuendo’ – so why are you moaning about me ‘defaming you’ when, according to you, I was clearing you of such activities?

Is it a fact that a man sending 450 text messages in around 12 months to a long-time female friend, at a time of a serious work issue that involved both those people, makes that man a definite ‘sex pest’?

            • chrism56

               /  August 11, 2017

The thing to know is how many texts were sent by the recipient in that period. It is likely that a lot were electorate type matters, especially if her working relationship with Todd had broken down. I would say most of Bill’s texts would be responses.
And like many of the others, I believe Winston doesn’t have the emails. He is back in his old terminological inaccuracy mode. I don’t think he has released anything that wasn’t already in the public domain. He is desperate for media attention with his polls tanking and Labour voters going home.
The old adage of “put up or shut up” needs to be applied.

Blazer, 450 text messages in 12 months is less than 2 a day. The other day my boss sent me 5 text messages, I responded with 5 text messages. In a week he will send me an average of 8-12 text messages a week, allowing for holidays that is over 500 text messages over 12 months- does that make him a sex pest? According to you it seems it does, yet all the texts were work related.

Grow up, the text messages are a non-story, and TRP was out of line to even raise the suggestion of impropriety.

What’s wrong with innuendo, gossip and smear tactics? Do all sides of the political spectrum engage in it? Do they find willing ears and mouths to believe and spread the stuff? Is it desirable for those who want a fair and conscionable world? Are there different styles and delivery of those arts which seek to disguise their venom and ugliness. And the ugliness of the attitude behind them?

It’s election year. This is how it rolls. It’s stupid to be offended or feign offence when your opposer does what you were delighted with from your champion.

You don’t have to look backwards for smear and innuendo – it’s going to be even more rife and deep over the next few weeks. Hell, start with the Farrar blog bright and early on Monday and see how much you can find.

(As an aside, that Barclay thing was so, so long ago it should be forgotten. I heard the most meaningful bits of the Turei story were a tad further back. Now there’s an invitation to fulmination.)

I don’t particularly like how TRP worded what you’re complaining about, but it’s relatively mild and has already been said elsewhere much more strongly. Are we best to not allow anything to be said about it? Or be allowed to discuss it?

I don’t think it’s anywhere near the low standard that Whale Oil sets. Yesterday ‘Not just Bill, now Goodfellow looks like a weasel’.

WO has yet another dirty attack on English again today in ‘Face of the Day’. That’s a lot more prominent. And the comments pile in on English too – why don’t you try to challenge that?

      Reply
      • Your blog do as you please.

But saying “but it’s relatively mild and has already been said elsewhere much more strongly” is a pretty weak defense of TRP’s little smear attempt. TRPs not to subtle comment its an example of the undermining of the standards you yourself call for Pete. You can’t run with the foxes and hunt with the hounds is my point….

And I’m not complaining about what TRP has written per see, its pretty stupid to imply what TRP did because of a few hundred texts to Bills long term electorate agent – when a situation like Barclays was unfolding. I was more pointing out the breach of the standards you say you support.

Personally don’t care if this is allow now, especially in authored posts and not just the comments – if that’s the new standard then TRP can expect the same sort of nasty smears back… he/she/it/x whatever the identification is, is a political operative and can hack it when they get slapped about with “do you beat your wife still” attacks

        Reply
        • There are no strict standards here, there are guidelines. I’m generally fairly light handed unless individuals persist or if things look like they could escalate. In a robust political forum there has to be some leeway and latitude or it simply wouldn’t work. A bit like in Parliament.

You’re allowed to complain. By the time I saw what you complained about there were many comments in response. So my option was to delete the whole thread, or to leave it.

I did step in when PDB tried to escalate things, that’s necessary to stop this place becoming a an ugly free for all.

As in sport retaliation and escalation is often worse than the original offence.

If you (or anyone else) sees something you take offence to by all means protest strongly, but if I’m doing something else in my life at the time and don’t react immediately to your implied demands, and if you try to guilt me into shutting something or someone down, Then I’m likely to politely tell you to pull your head in.

“if that’s the new standard then TRP can expect the same sort of nasty smears back…”

The standard remains the same, retaliatory ‘smears’ create no end of problems and are very strongly discouraged.

If you take offence at something you can argue against it strongly, or if you want to you can contact me and advise me you think it requires my action – I don’t have the time to monitor everything minutely.

          • “and if you try to guilt me into shutting something or someone down” No guilting Pete – but pointing out a divergence from your self declared standards.

Pretty simply really… frankly I don’t care. No one with any sense believes it but when PDB skewered Blazer as an exmaple in the thread you removed it – but is calling an anonymous poster like Blazer something nasty, which you deleted, worse than imply a strict catholic like Bill is somehow unfaithful to his spouse?

And I note TRP dumped on your blog and left…. when he has his own platform as well…..

Anyway have a good weekend Pete… I’m off to do more productive things

  3. “Bill English is donkey deep in the Todd Barclay affair”. Nobody actually cares except the left and bored media. This is hardly a scandal. Winsome never ever paying back his $158,000 to Parliamentary Services is still of much more of a shocker.

“Bill English was texting his former electorate secretary hundreds of times in the lead up to her resignation”. If it’s allegedly 450 (as claimed)over a year it runs in roughly at 8-9 a week. That’s nothing. I send at least 30-50 a day, esp to older people who aren’t into whatsapp or messenger. Also, with a major issue going on and her wanting to get an over and above payout she’d be texting him wildly also. I’m sure she got her pound of flesh.

“Winston Peters has some or all of the communications and is going to drip feed them over the next few weeks.” That would absolutely be counter to any contract she signed when she got paid out and it WON’T happen.

  7. Hi y’all. Just to clarify, the breakfast hosts at Radio Hauraki have been running the ‘sex pest’ line about English for quite a while now. They’re taking the piss, as am I. Nobody seriously believes Bill English is sending his former electorate officer dick pics. But he has unlawfully deleted the texts, including 22 on the day before she resigned, so clearly he has something to hide.

If Winston has the texts, then he will drip feed them for maximum embarrassment all the way to the election. So we shouldn’t assume that Little and Turei are the last of the resignations; there’s still time for one more twist.

      • The PM (and other Ministers) are required under Parliamentary rules to retain all communications. English knows this all too well, as his predecessor also deleted texts and was chided by the Speaker for doing so.

English has said that he has “a new phone” which is somewhere between disingenuous and outright bullshit. I’m sure many readers here have new phones. As you know, nothing is automatically lost in the transfer between old and new. To delete txts (or any other info) a conscious decision has to be made and a physical action taken. So, why delete? What’s he hiding?

This is interesting, was the phone the texts sent on paid for by Parliamentary Services, and the taxpayer, or were they sent on a private phone?

If the former and he did delete them (is there any proof? sorry I haven’t followed this closely so not sure if there is proof or Winston’s say so), and if the latter how was it illegal to delete them as a private phone is not subject to OIA.
