Peters pursuing Super leaker

Winston Peters is trying to find out who leaked the information about him being overpaid superannuation for a number of years.

There is some irony in the king of leak-mongers getting so upset over a leak but Peters as some justification for being grumpy.

There has been a lot of speculation about who leaked and who was responsible for circulating the leak to media. Inevitably ‘dirty politics’ has been suggested.

On Monday morning in an interview with RNZ Peters, referring to a conversation with Newshub’s Lloyd Burr, said “he did drop, what I did know or did suspect but he dropped it, the informant was IRD”.

Newshub now report:  Anne Tolley given heads up over Winston Peters’ pension overpayment

Newshub can reveal Social Development Minister Anne Tolley was given an early heads up about Winston Peters being overpaid superannuation.

Mr Peters met with the Ministry of Social Development on July 15 – one month later, on August 15, Ms Tolley was alerted under the No Surprises Act.

Newshub received an anonymous phone call just three days later on August 18. Ms Tolley says the leak did not come from her office.

So it took over a week for the story to come out.

Now the New Zealand First Leader is on the warpath, sending out investigators to try and find the source who leaked he was overpaid superannuation.

Stuff:  Winston Peters has investigators working on who leaked info about his pension overpayment

NZ First leader Winston Peters says he won’t stand by and let someone get away with “blatant dirty politics” after information about his superannuation overpayment was leaked.

“Someone decided they would break the law and leak it in a political way and some of those tweets and other comments point to knowledge out there that it was malicious and politically dirty,” Peters told media following a candidates meeting in Northland on Monday night.

“I’ve been flat out, as you know, on the campaign of issues and when I’ve got time I’ll turn my mind to it, but I’m not going to stand by and let someone get away with blatant dirty politics and breaking the law.”

Peters said he had investigators working on uncovering the leak and would let the public know who it was – “I’ve got my deep suspicions”.

He has a right to try to find out who breached his privacy.

But again, it’s highly ironic that Peters is so affronted by being embarrassed by a leak, when he has so often used leaks and even hints of leaks to embarrass political opponents.

He knows how to play dirty politics as well as anyone.

Peters seemed very flustered in interviews when this story broke, and it is highly embarrassing for him, so it seems very unlikely he would have ‘leaked’ this story himself to try to get some media attention and some voter sympathy.

But when politics gets dirty nothing should be ruled out.

Shouldn’t take long to find the person or persons who leaked: as soon as the heat goes on, someone will throw someone under a bus, and then there they will be.

    • Forget the leaker for a moment. This is a travesty. What’s wrong with Peters – he’s usually such a prodigious litigant!

I want to know why Mr Peters was charged interest and penalties and more so, why he accepted that. From what he’s said it’s clear he is fault-free and that persons unknown either changed his form (forgery and jailable) or data was entered incorrectly into the system.

This is appalling. He needs to sue them for these egregious events.

Nothing about this is his fault. Find your usual Mojo Winnie and sue the beggars as you normally would. Sort it out!

I mean to say he announced he was suing Mediaworks and Mark Richardson, an issue that fairly concurrent to this matter!

Come on Winnie – this is a sure win. Be a champion for other downtrodden beneficiaries.

Out of one ton of mud thrown about with abandon in multiple handfuls over the years, he scored a few actual hits. Other times he just trashed harmless people with no evidence & no justifiable reason other than to get attention & show off. He’s a prize prick. Always was.

Which bit have I got wrong there, and why?

Wouldnt be surprised if the leak came from a blogger knowing that the blame would fall on to their political enemy and they then had their blog prepped and could then once again use it to make personal attacks.

Bennett…..’More on Bennetts knowledge of the Peters pension overpayment – Bennett volunteered the information herself when I ran into her at the airport where we are waiting on flights to Nelson with the PM.
Bennett said she was expecting to be asked which is why she volunteered the info. She confirmed she discussed it with Anne Tolley because she was aware the MSD minister also knew. But she says she did not discuss it with any other ministers or staff. ‘
‘Bennett said she did not share the information with any staff in her
office and had treated it as highly confidential.’….T.Watkins
She treated it as highly confidential but discussed it with..Tolley.The question is how was she as she says aware’ that Tolley knew.Bennett has …form.Which of her portfolios would suggest she would be asked?

  4. Barry Soper says he’s sure the leak came from National, and it’s dirty politics. Where was his concern for dirty politics when Winston Peters was leaking private text messages from Bill English just a few weeks ago?

If you live by the leak, chances are you’ll also die (politically) by the leak.

He certainly blabbed that there had been some from Bill English in the Todd Barclay Much Ado About Nothing,

  5. As posted aint Karma a bitch.
This is the drongo who when barracked in the house claimed that he ‘had evidence to spare about the particular member’
Wasn’t peters a lawyer at some stage ?
We get lawyers to peruse documents for the ‘hidden clauses’ before we sign them.
Evidently one law for him and one for the rest of us.

Yes. I have no comment to make and then make one. Dumb.

      • For the Greens and Lab it’s all good if the news becomes:

Metiria’s abysmal treatment vs Peter’s kid gloved and protected status.
        Govt leaks Peter’s private info
        Nats lose support from Peters

Someone tell me how this is good for National please?

Smells to me of a left-wing hit timed to coincide with Tolley being officially told.

Note that Peters says he was told that it came from an IRD source.

‘Dirty Politics’ was a left-wing political hit that backfired massively on them, the leaking of National’s emails under Brash was one that worked – thus this is likely to also be one.

Putting stolen private information into the public domain is a left-wing thing – after all Hager has made a living from it.

Chris Trotter…’Richard Harman, proprietor of the Politik website, has (almost certainly unwittingly) identified one possible beneficiary in his latest posting, “National Sees Path To Power” (28/8/17) in which he states: “National is now going to target Winston Peters and NZ First in the hope of winning one or two per cent of his vote back off him. They believe that will be enough to hold on to power.”

          • PDB

             /  August 29, 2017

Chris Trotter should know that “winning one or two per cent of his vote back off him” won’t help them any if they are currently around the low 40% that many think they are.

You can’t have it both ways – National is losing support due to Ardern & National only need 1 or 2% more to govern alone.

conditional on the Greens and other minority partners not reaching 5% and the votes falling away.
