Introducing the first recipient of a trumpian presidential pardon:

Arpaio ran jails with conditions so squalid and brutal that an estimated 160 prisoners died in his care. He put detainees in tents outside in the oppressive Arizona heat in temperatures that reached 145 degrees; Arpaio himself called his tent city “a concentration camp.”

He was particularly fond of humiliating prisoners with things like chain gangs, and he once put a webcam in the bathroom of a women’s jail so prisoners would have to relieve themselves in full view of the internet.

He used his office to harass and intimidate people who were critical of him; according to a 2011 Justice Department investigation, Arpaio’s department “arrested individuals without cause, filed meritless complaints against the political adversaries of Sheriff Arpaio, and initiated unfounded civil lawsuits and investigations against individuals critical of MCSO policies and practices,” including journalists and judges.

That report also said his department had “a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos.” The department was so obsessed with pursuing undocumented immigrants that it let serious crimes vanquish with little or no investigation, including hundreds of cases of rape and child sex abuse.

Then there was the time he and his deputies staged a phony assassination plot and framed an innocent man for it, who ended up spending four years in jail before being cleared of the charges.

Taxpayers had to pay out an average of over [US]$6 million every year of the more than two decades of Arpaio’s tenure from lawsuits filed by people his department abused and harassed in various ways.

It’s hard to imagine a man less deserving of a presidential pardon that Sherrif Joe Arpaio.

        Look! Squirrel!

and just to be perfectly clear about your Look! Squirrel! false-equivalent reference to Chelsea Manning, the Arpaio pardon constitutes the most forthright racist incitement of the trump era to date.

trump called Arpaio a “great American patriot,” which is a definition of patriotism that endorses extreme ethnic profiling, terror raids, and dehumanising punishment. And it’s a definition that endorses using internment camps in extreme heat, parading women and juvies in chain gangs for the cameras, obliging pregnant prisoners to give birth in shackles, and degrading and bullying inmates. It’s a definition of patriotism that’s resulted in the deaths of 160 inmates while in Arpaio’s custody.

That’s not patriotism; it’s the abuse of power in the cause of bigotry.

Land Supply, land supply, land supply
“We calculated that between 1996 and 2011, the Houston region increased its pavement, its impervious surface coverage, by about 25 percent, which is hundreds of square miles of pavement.”

Berkeley Police Allowed Antifa to Jump Barricades, Assault Demonstrators
Berkeley police chief Andrew Greenwood defended how police handled the protest, saying they made a strategic decision to let the anarchists enter to avoid more violence.

Greenwood said “the potential use of force became very problematic” given the thousands of peaceful protesters in the park. Once anarchists arrived, it was clear there would not be dueling protests between left and right so he ordered his officers out of the park and allowed the anarchists to march in.
    That’s a politicised police force – nice?
