Hurricane Irma destruction has begun

Hurricane Irma, the largest storm recorded in the Atlantic Ocean,  has started to track along the north eastern islands of the Caribbean and is already causing major destruction.

Irma is shown in the centre right to centre let track range. On the far right is the track of another hurricane further out in the Atlantic, Jose.

Over the next few days it is expected to track close to larger countries and population centres and may hit Florida later in the weekend.

RNZ:  Hurricane Irma wreaks major damage in Caribbean

Hurricane Irma has destroyed buildings and caused major flooding on several French island territories in the Caribbean.

The four “most solid” buildings on Saint Martin, shared by France and the Netherlands, were destroyed, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said.

Significant damage is also being reported in the Dutch section.

The Category 5 hurricane, the highest possible level, has sustained wind speeds reaching 295km/h.

The most powerful Atlantic storm in a decade first hit Antigua and Barbuda, before moving on to Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy.

Its “extremely dangerous core” is forecast by the US National Hurricane Center to move over parts of the northern Virgin Islands on Wednesday, passing near or just north of Puerto Rico, then passing near or just north of the coast of the Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from at-risk areas across the Caribbean. Residents have flocked to shops for food, water, and emergency supplies, and airports have closed on several islands which are popular holiday destinations.

This looks like being a major disaster spread over a number of countries for a number of days.

  1. And it’s not just Irma that’s a threat.

Further out in the Atlantic …JOSE IS CLOSE TO HURRICANE STRENGTH…

Meanwhile trumpy cheerleader Rush Limbaugh is claiming that Hurricane Irma is a liberal media plot to advance climate change discussions… maybe he’d like to go down to the Florida Keys and canute Irma out of existence to demonstrate how much he backs his bs.

The warmer the ocean the more energy is available for a tropical cyclone to form, and water in the Atlantic is nearly 2C warmer than normal:

    • mean winds of 295km/h and wind gusts to 360 km/h
    • storm surges six metres above normal tide levels
    • Puerto Rico residents preparing to be without electricity for 4-6 months
    • Barbuda already wiped clear of 90% of its buildings and every cell tower, and warnings are out that other Leeward Islands will be destroyed as well
    • two more tropical storms formed in the same area in the past 24 hrs – Jose and Katia
    • Jose expected to become a hurricane in 36-48 hours

Welcome to the bigliest Chinese climate change hoax ever recorded.

I blame it all on the god fearing North Korean white supremacist gay god fearing climate change folk, barring that i blame it all on donald trump as he deserves it and God doesn’t like him and is punishing the USA for their stupidity.

Here is a lot more sensible argument about why Irma might be good for the US
The US has very poor defences against all natural disasters – That is why so much damage is done for relatively routine events.

      Climate change skepticism? Meh.

If I had the time or the inclination to debate your denialism I’d do so but I have neither. Instead here’s a link so you can treat yourself… It comprises a comprehensive and taxonomically organised series of responses to the most common skeptical arguments on global warming. Read and awaken…

…and on the subject of the USA isn’t it ironic that no amount of relief funding from the federal government will rebuild Houston. The rebuild will depend on the availability of cheap migrant labour … but of course trump and his white supremacist buddies are in the process of ruling that out.
