I’ve been feeding the two ducks by hand now. Best way to get the lard off Charlie’s lazy ass I thought – plus it’s cute. They’re so dainty & polite how they take the grains out of my hand.

But I haven’t seen Prettygirl for the past 4 days – only Charlie’s turned up for wheatgrains. Was certain she was preggers. Her behaviour had changed. The local Mallard drakes were keen as to get it on with her – getting really aggressive about it – & she wasn’t having a bar of it! Charlie’s the only one she’s wanted to do the horizontal mamba with. Four nights ago she flew over to halfway up the opposite bank, up a cliff, where these pushy insistent Mallard would-be rapists can’t climb up after her & disappeared into the foliage. And I hadn’t seen her since.

Charlie kept regularly cruising up & down, patrolling the stream, escorting other drakes who rocked on up, casual as, from the area. Seems to have worked, only a couple have slipped through his net & they’ve moved on.

Anyway, this morning was yacking to Pooki – who flew over from a treetop for seconds today, before he starts the day’s mahi working the parenga on my side – when this tiny, timid, quiet little mallard hen burrowed her way up through the undergrowth.

Hello sweetie I said, you’re new, & I chucked her a few grains. And when she gobbled them up & looked up for more I saw the little minor injury hole on the side, towards the tip, of her cute little green beak. Prettygirl!!

God!! The state of her!! She’s got an elegant, slender little neck which is creamy white at the front usually & she always bathes & has a good feather-groom several times a day. No wonder I didn’t recognise her!! She was sopping wet, all through. Dirty. Even her neck looked grubby. And she’s not talking at all. Just gobbling up handfuls. They’ve flown off together towards the park now.

I worry about that girl. No idea what’s going on at the moment. Bloody teenagers!

PS: My working assumption is she’s laid some eggs & been stuck sitting on a nest hidden away somewhere, so she hasn’t eaten & she has been able to have a wash & groom. Not sure why she’s left the nest if so. Or where it is. The park’s down the end of the street, a long way away.

Gotta smile. It’s quite hard to tell the Mallard drakes apart because they all look exactly the same & you can on,y really go by relative size & how old they look. But the Grey/Malllard hybrids all look different. No two are exactly alike. Their head, body & wing plumage is all individually unique.

A pair of drakes just sailed past my place down in the stream – one a purebreed with all the gear on: brown & black-spotted front, white vicar’s neck collar, yellow beak, glossy iridescent green head. The other was a hybrid I thought was Charlie & I called out “Gidday Charlie 👋 !” (how you do). Nothin. Just sailed on by heading up ‘Rua way.

And I realized – oops, embarrassing, not Charlie! Got a similar blacktop crewcut-look, but Charlie hasn’t got a green head! And then Charlie sailed into view just behind them. The marine haircut’s unmissable, he’s the only one with that particular look. Oo! Hiya Charlie 👋😀 , I sing out. “Reeb, reeb”. He cock his head & looks at me with one eye as he does a U-turn down in the wai. Want some food?

Usually he’d paddle-wheel out to the middle, lift off & be standing on the block wall werp werp werping by now. Not today. Two more reebs & he was back off upstream – he saw those two off without incident, now he’s heading back up to the top of his patrol area. He’s on escort duty!

Prettygirl’s nest must be somewhere around the area, not in the park.

Garn. Frustrating. Just had a coffee out at the fence. Start hearing the usual insistent ik! ik! ik! Bluebelle’s right down the end of the far parenga. Jojo’s with her. She’s growing, but she’s still pretty tiny! She’s not allowed to play in view of anyone! Not even me. ☹️

She was running around, little black fluffball on stilts, in the grass in a tiny little dell but by the time I get inside & grab the binoculars Mum’s made her get under cover again. All three adults know Ella’s been cruising the stream. They stand on the edge of the parenga & watch her go by like hawks. They don’t let Jojo near the water yet, too small – Ella’s four feet long. She takes the ducklings, they’re not letting her take Jojo.

They’ve got the whole far parenga riddled with tunnels & play areas, but if they see me watching her playing in a clearing thru a gap in the foliage, they immediately start pulling the plant leaves & bracken n stuff around & weave a screen over the gap. I’ve been in amongst that blackberry & other foliage. It’s like a little pixie or leprechaun forest inside. There’s plenty of room for her & them to run around between the ‘trees’.
