Prettygirl swooped down, squawking, about half an hour ago & came speed-wombling up the drive with a big blimmin Mallard drake-on-the-make racing after her! Let her thru the gate & saw the blighter off with some strong language & windmill arm-waving!

Got her calmed down & 6 small palmfuls of wheat into her. She whined for more, so I gave in this morning – in view of her traumatised state – & gave her two more – & the little witch suddenly grabbed the plastic bag in my other hand! Talk about getting an earful re not abusing my generosity!

Anyway, she flew off towards the park, & Charlie’s just now shot up & over the fence from the stream & had his brekky too. He’s a good lad, really. At least when you tell him : “Nope. All gone. No more!” he always just says “Urr”, stops asking, accepts it & wanders off onto the lawn to have a little think & decide “where to?” next.

That bent left aileron feather’s still hanging down askew. Doesn’t seem to affect flight performance, but you gotta wonder if it increases drag & slows him down when he’s roaring off after those Mallard Drake lotharios. He won’t let me attempt removal or repairs.

Just on the subject of wings … while they’re not exactly the most streamlined or agile of flyers, the pooks’ wings really are something else to look at! It doesn’t happen often, but if you’re lucky enuf to catch them standing in the sun somewhere having a groom in the late morning & they stretch both of their big, black wings out at the same time – they’re huge! You’d think you were looking at a vulture. If I can get a pic or a video flip sometime, I’ll post it.

From my own close & continual observation, they are incredibly strong, easily able to balance on one leg with its long, strong toes, very dextrous with their other, strong, “free hand”, with a very, very sharp beak which functions as a precise ‘picker’, a vice-like crusher, scissors, & secateurs, depending on what they want to use it for.

            • Gezza

               /  October 12, 2017

Oh & they use that beak as a dagger if a duck really pisses them off – they only have to have one quick stab – the ducks get the message straight away.

I’ve looked down in the stream on & off all day. Apart from seeing Elvis slither up & into the tree roots, there’s been no sign of activity. But just in from aqua-avian dinner service, & I saw, at 6.30 pm, Ella (much bigger than Elvis) has her head & 1/4 of her body jutting out from the roots, unmoving.

She may have been doing this there for years, I just never noticed. She blends in perfectly with the shadows & the existing roots, buried sunken branches, & natural crevices & ledges carved by the water into the bank itself. It’s only her moving that gave her away previously, & now I that have learned every shadow & object around her stump, it’s easy to see when she pops half-out, hoping to surprise unwary prey.

2nd time she’s done that! I stood at the top of the parenga: called out in a low voice “Hello Ella. Good girl. You’re a beautiful girl”, just repeating it several times as it’s what has brought her over to look at me closely in the past 3 times. And she raised her head – right out of the water – to look at me! It sends chills down my spine.

Then she came out, swam south, upstream a little way, & I lost her in the light playing on the ripples. But she’s bloody huge! It really is like watching a shark move in slow motion. I see she’s slipped back in there and is poking out again.

Mmm. She’s coming in to her happy time now maybe. The light’s fading & she’s still there but she’s practically invisible. I can’t go down to the ledge cos Jack & Vera are tucked up down there in the grass with their little picanninnies. They need to keep them out of the water. Unfortunately they also need to keep them clear of Pooky & Bluey.

Just back from the Super again, Poss. Hine was on supervisor duty again, God – gorgeous hunk of wahine there I tell ya mate! Wasn’t flat out, so I rocked on over & asked if I could have a third date? She said she’d think about it.

I asked for her hubby’s cell #m like I said I would, but she reckoned he’d hold out for a Ferrari! She never gave me his number tho, so I reckon she’s a bit concerned that he actually let me have her for a used large petrol flymo, and $1,000, cash.

New mum out on the water! Hybrid. Looks a bit like Prettygirl but just wearing a similar outfit. Hasn’t got Girl’s cute little cream-coloured neck-front feathers. 8 kids! Couple of cheeky little boys at least I’d say! Running up the bank. Into everything! Mum’s charging at Mallard Drakes who get too close & they’re shitting themselves & bolting. The ducklets were all zipping around into nooks & crannies around Ella’s stump, but mum’s just shepherded them Southward to the beach.

Just as well – Elvis has just rippled on up the channel & slipped into the stump’s underwater roots!

Yay! It’s Vera! They’re hers & Jack’s. They’re got got them all up on the grassy bank ledge below, from where I’ve often filmed Ella & the other nga tuna, for the night. I did wonder – Jack & Charlie have both been patrolling the area of the stream below for the past several says, sometime jointly, shepherding Mallard drakes out of the vicinity – they go, too. J & C just sidle up & ‘mark’ them in the water, werp away quietly talking-up their victories, undermining the interlopers’ confidence. And Vera’s been MIA for a few days,

Sweet. I is dam interest in dat. 😎👍🏼

        • I used to live in a house which was by the railway line. Steam train excursions would go past, make the house shake as if it was in an earthquake, make a noise like nothing on earth and deafen everyone with their whistle/hooters. The animals would be hysterical with terror and the black coalsmoke was suffocating. Steam trains look good at a distance, but thank Heaven I wasn’t around when they were the only trains.

My Nokia Windows 8.1 phone is finally history. One of the first with wireless charging. With my new nano sim card a Samsung S8 has taken up the mantle of my old number that has been with me since my first Telecom brick arrived thirty years ago. Took the Nokia apart for a clean and will see if it sells on Trademe. Tends to crash on huge web pages for lack of memory nowadays I think. Otherwise good.

We had a southerly change come thru here last nite & although I put the heater on this morning, it never got windy, just a bit of patchy rain yesterday evening & overnight – but it’s turned into yet another glorioysly warm & sunny one. Just chatting to Den, a neighbour, about whether we’ve had 3 or 4 weeks, pretty well continuously, of this weather now.

What makes you decide to go with a Samsung rather than an iPhone, Al?

It’s something I’ll need to decide soon if I want better cellcam wildlife movies.

I’ve got an iPad and it quite often annoys me trying to do things on its touch screen. So I decided I didn’t want to be entirely dependent on Apple. Also I can compare the two for the future. So far I’m pretty happy with the Samsung which I got 3 months old at a reasonable discount from new price in very good condition. Transferred all my email, contacts, messages without much difficulty. I can run Outlook and Onedrive with good compatibility with my Windows laptop and desktop. iTunes annoys the heck out of me too.

        • Heater ? I’ve had fans going up here and walking barefoot (alas, I found one of the staplegun staples that I thought I’d swept up as I walked barefoot into the loo-laundry. Bloody painful)

I did some pruning today to make the Birds Hotel a bit more symmetrical. I love the way that so many of them make use of it. Waxeyes, sparrers, thrushes, blackbirds, tuis, grey warblers (how could I have mistaken them for sparrers ?), swallows, chaffinches, goldfinches, an occasional morepork, rosellas, even (oh joy) wood pigeons….

Some clod up the road seems to have cut down some trees. I hope they fell on whoever it was.

          • I mean, why buy a place with trees in this part of town (on the edge of the country) and then turn it into a bare nothing ?

The kids these days have it so easy. As an aspiring guitarist a couple of decades ago, I remember anxiously awaiting the next issue of ‘Guitar World’, and hoping it contained tab for a song I liked. 😀

Ah fk it! I couldn’t be bothered with all that sht! Just give me that guitar & play me the fkn record. I’ll figure it out – or I’ll get shty if I can’t & say it’s crap song anyway! Keep things simple. That’s my motto! 👍🏼

             /  October 12, 2017

It WAS how I saw things patu. But the fact is my brain for some reason could never compute the grapes on music sheets, or concentrate hard enuf to even learn tab. It frustrated me when I tried. I was forever finding out that I was miles ahead of the music notation, just going by feel & ear & lost in tbe music, having switched off the reading part of my brain, I guess.

But as I got older, & started to play in bands, and songwrite, & record at home, & then do them with others, I’d struggle to work out what chords beyond the basic majors, minors, & 7ths I was playing. And I also regretted that I couldn’t just pull any song out of a bag set the music on the music stand, & play! I missed a lot of good music that was too complex for me.

Me too G. Nirvana was a ‘staple’ back in the day, when I should have been learning Tool. Even though this one is easy, & sounds great unplugged. The verse is just Am & G. The great thing about Kurt being a ‘lefty’, is that watching him play is like looking in a mirror…

            • Gezza

               /  October 13, 2017

Sorry – I fell down due to not sleeping for nearly 24 hours, & have only just come round @ 02:56am!

Please don’t be offended (I know you won’t) but that song sounds a lot like the first one I ever wrote when I was 15 & trying to pull either Colleen or Raewyn both of whom were showing interest in my new 1st ever guitar during Summer hols around at Jed the surfie’s place. (I outgrew the ukulele immediately when I I heard The Beatles – & I had just bought some John Lennon / Granny Clampett “I only have to wear them for driving, girls” glasses. They didn’t suit me, but nobody except mum & dad – especially dad, who was an absolute bastard about it on several occasions – ever said that!)

I only knew five chords, I didn’t know what barre chords were, & I didn’t know what the five chords were that I had worked out but I could change them smoothly after a day’s practice on the back lawn in the sun.

I believed that all six strings must be played for any chord to be truly valid, except for Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, & Blues songs – for which only two strings needed to be played for the rhythym parts. And that a specialist lead player needed to be imported into your act if you wanted any lead playing!

And the chords in that first song I wrote didn’t go together well at all, & the “melody” of the tune I put to them was just fitted to whatever the chords were, & musically wasn’t very good at all – in fact it was horrible. But Rawwyn didn’t notice & so I scored with it – at last!

And so, once I had pulled, I threw that song away & tried to forget I had ever written it! And it sounded a lot like that one of Kurt’s.

Fuck they’re horrible in concert! Fkn shockers! 🙄

Out of tune singing, wanky, lazy ass duck guitar playing from old windmill legs & the other shorter skinny wreck! 😠

      Love their records tho. 👍🏼

          Very Tidy!
I can get something very close to that in normal tuning because of the unique way I play the barre chords for Stones numbers. My mate Paddy always moaned that his fingers weren’t long enuf to do that!
