Cold, overcast & norwester windy in North Welly this morning. The pooks have been fed & both boys have hooned off through the undergrowth after an unhappy poor Bluebelle again. One of the boys has to go!

‘Girl & Charlie flew in separately from the stream & have had their 6 palmful cereal allowance as well. Charlie’s damaged left aileron strut was flapping in the wind & looked looser. It spoils his clean lines & I made a cunning lightning grab at it with my left hand to try & remove it, while feeding him with my right, but he was too quick for me & won’t fall for that one again. They have now departed parkwards.

        Just FYI for anyone interested.
Mallard drakes will mate with just about any duck hen that moves, and they are aggressive about it. They supposedly seasonally stick with a pregnant hen only until she lays, then they’re off on the ran-tan again.

However, both my “pet” wild ducks are hybrid Mallard/Grey ducks, & their appearance & behaviour is highly individualised. Charlie is devoted to Girl. That clip is from last year’s breeding season & they are still together. Charlie is a good, loyal, protective hubby kind of drake! 👍🏼 💪🏼

        • I’ve got done wonderful leopard up tree shots for you Gezz and interested parties. I’ve got steppe buzzards and ground hornbills and and… just need to unpack first

(No pressure tho, eh ? 😀. God, you’d luv Charlie, I reckon, trav mate! He’s out there in the covered clearlite patio, which approximates a Norwesterly wind tunnel with a firehose going at the moment. Just had his approved dinner supplement of six palmfuls of wheat grains, but this arvo, we are not simply accepting ‘Nope. All gone. No more”, with a shrug and an ” Urr”.

Oh no. This arvo we are all: ” Wot? Gotta be werping! Werp werp werp. Bang Gez’s shin with tip of beak. Werp werp werp. Pull Gezza’s trouser leg. Repeat until Gez gives 4 more palmfuls larfing his head off, & says: “Nope, No more. All gone this time, Charlie. No more.” – & gets out of the wind tunnel & closes the back slider & pretend he can’t see Charlie any more until Charlie goes & hunkers down out of the wind around the corner on the back lawn!

PS: That damaged left aileron feather is currently flapping around at all angles in the howling zephyr & appears to now be attached to the main strut only by the merest whisper of keratin. Hopefully it will simply dislodge itself during one of his his next vertical takeoffx or the hi-speed, hi-G dangerous turn manoeuvres he is so fond of, & his airspeed will return to just under the speed of sound in a dive! The big Mallard Drakes down in the stream call him “Stuka Feet”, I believe.

            • There is nothing more flattering than being greeted lovingly by someone else’s dog-Spot, a large pig dog down the road, is solemnly pleased to see me; runs to the gate, tail wagging, stands up for ear pulls and chin scratches and is sorry when I go. He is a big softy when he’s not hunting, a dear serious-minded animal. Despite an abused childhood, he is a loving and gentle animal.

Took an unexpected peek into the long white tunnel today. This one seems appropriate…

Which, while puzzling me briefly over which of several things the long white tunnel might be referring to, & concluding it was an unclear communication best not wasted further time on, brought me to this:

Beautiful G. Nescafe shouted me a ticket to a brownie gig in the st James a lifetime ago …long after sonny had signed off. Brownie passed on soon after. Nothing complex about brownies guitar playing, sometimes less is more

They are – or were – just the most awesome pair. Their songs & music seem effortless & timeless.

My life passed before me when my powerfly and i encountered two behemoths on a bridge built for one.

Ah yes. Christmas Eve. Rimutaka road. Misty rain. Late for a Masterton gig. The final one before the band split into a working duo, a drummer, & a rhytyhm guitarist who didn’t have the time anymore & was sick of sleeping away the weekend becoz of the late gigs, & working hard in a madhouse all week.

Fishtailed, into a bank, rolled three times, loose amo & guitar case flying everywhere, everything happened in slow motion. Car was a write off. I stood alongside, in shock, looking annoyedly at my red shirt arm sleeve thru the large hole in the elbow of my brand new fantastic jacket, which had been sticking out the driver’s window. Then I remembered my shirt was white.

As I was thinking what an awful Christmas, what will I tell the Mrs, I looked over the barrier I had just escaped going thru or over, saw the valley way below, & concluded someone must have been looking after me – and it was a very good Christmas indeed!

I’ve noticed something odd G. Now that I am learning bass (or pretending to), that is all I hear. Heard this one on the wireless today, & thought it warranted further investigation…

Now that I am learning bass (or pretending to), that is all I hear.

You’re not pretending to, mate – you’re doing it – & good on ya! 👍🏼

Yeah, I used to get stoned for the same reason. Dunno about you but I always found after a couple of tokes I could much more clearly hear whatever I chose to listen for – vocals, bv’s, drums, bass, keyboards – I could somehow filter everything else down to a lower level & bring up the one I was interested in. The only thing it wasn’t good for was learning anything except rhythym playing, because 1. I’d get hypnotised by the all-embracing feel of the music & lose track of where I was when chord changes were needed, & 2. I just couldn’t remember enuf of the lead to put it all together.

In my experience, pot is great for listening, & shit for learning. Simple as that.

        • Gezza

           /  October 14, 2017

Helped me with vocals & own bv’s when recording my own songs, could totally zone out & relax into them. But yes, had to write lyrics, & play & record everything else – straight.

Learnt – or rather – taught myself – blues piano in C, F, & G mainly, stoned off my face.

But if I was advising a youngster, I’d say don’t do that. Not if you want to play professionally. You’ll just end up aimlesdly jamming & taking too long to get any good!

I’ve got five youngsters, and my advice to them all is ‘hugs, not drugs’. 🙂 And I like to remind Jr regularly, that playing guitar will get him lots of hugs. Funnily enough, he has been practising a lot more lately… The dirty bastard… 😀

A comment Kitty made above G, as well as your many reflections on your ‘animal offspring’, have got me thinking. About the creatures that surround us everyday. I related earlier how I only hear the bassline in music now. I have also noticed something else…
I live under 3km, as the crow flies, from my workplace. I’ve shown you pictures here of my pigeon friends from work, who are even more sociable than your ducks. But the pigeons never visit me at home, despite the tallest tree in the ‘hood’ having it’s roots firmly planted within my boundary. The mighty pohutukawa is home to natives only, and there are plenty of them. A few residents, but mainly native visitors. I guess the foreighners know their place

The only foreigners who dare land on ‘tane ma pohutukawa’, are a few ratbag Lorikeets, who are always quickly chased away by the Tui. I’ve witnessed a few very impressive ‘dog fights’, and wished I’d had my phone handy to capture them…
