trav – if you do have any video footage you’d like to turn into gifs like that let me know & I’ll post the website address & some details – I can only upload from a Windows laptop though. Doesn’t work with the iPad.

If there’s anybody here who misses the odd earful from a mother in law who’s a good sort really, email PG and I’ll send him ma’s number for you.

    • My Ma in law has passed and I miss her, but it’s in a “what’s 3 down in the cryptic ?” and a “how many cloves do you stick in an onion for bread sauce?” and “which way up ranuncula bulbs” way. Her age group wasn’t much for a couple of hours on the blower chewing the fat.

    • I remember the ghastly Wayne’s equally ghastly mother whose semi-literate texts were repeated verbatim. Horrors.

Funny as what ? A whoopie cushion ? Dry wit ? You can’t be serious. Crude and vulgar more like.

I hope that he isn’t. What a ghastly thought.

Any tree knowledgeables here able to tell me what type they think the tallest tree in the middle is? I’ve got three of them on the stream bank, about 24m tall, grey, mottled bark, single trunk at base branching out only higher up. Leaves are needles, about 4″ long.

Not from that photo in what looks like your average Wellington howling gale afternoon breeze. How about a photo of a leaf.

      • Gezza

It does look a bit like there’s a roaring zephyr Al, must admit, but it was a pretty calm day – very slight Norwesterly breeze when that photo was taken. It’s still as anything out there right now & the leaves in all three of them still have that southerly-facing lean. Probably just grown that way because the Norwester’s the prevailing wind.

They don’t make tree identification websites that cater for trees grown in a wind tunnel, G. And the resolution is lousy. How about a close-up of a leaf.

It’s a bit too high up to get a close up of a leaf Alan. There are a few fallen dried needles on the back paved area – they’re about six inches long – but they wouldn’t be that useful to ID it.

Might find some fresh ones a couple of hundred metres downwind, G. If it’s a calm Wellington day. Otherwise it’s going to stay a mystery.

Do they howl like banshees in a gale G, if so Chris us correct …casurinas

Photo is rubbish but looks like a Casuarina to me as well.

Sheds needles like nobody’s business on blustery days. The paving is covered in them. I can’t really tell if it’s casusarina from looking at pics on the web.

Sounds like what you have then.

Nope, the picture looks nothing like either. We had those as a shelterbelt on the property where I grew up

Alan, I must thank you again for solving last night’s ‘Bird mystery’. It’s always good to learn something new. My ‘ataahua wahine’ has a strange phobia of dead birds, and even though I told her last night that we had identified the species of the ‘window basher’, and I had put it in the freezer, she reckons that she near shat herself today, when after going shopping, she went to put our meat in the freezer 😀

You’d better not get her a cat then, patu. It was interesting for me to find it too. I’ve been kind of amazed we get swallows and nightingales up here as well. I’d never thought of them as NZ birds.

We have two cats already Alan, & guess who has to dispose of their ‘victims’… 😀
I’ve commented here before about our 15m high ‘Tane Pohutukawa’, and how it attracts birdlife from far & wide. I’ve witnessed some very impressive ‘dogfights’, between the native Tui & the Rainbow Lorikeet immigrants.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m attempting to learn bass. This one is far beyond my current capability, but is a great track anyway. Enjoy…

The bass is not bad patu but what’s that wailing in the background?
