The Manus mess

The treatment of refugees on Manus Island has long been a festering sore for Australia, and it has become worse. New Zealand has offered to help but that may come to nothing.

RNZ:  Manus stand-off: ‘We need to find a compassionate solution’

The new immigration minister has reassured refugees on Manus Island that New Zealand will do all it can to help ease the crisis.

Up to 700 refugees are refusing to leave the detention centre in Papua New Guinea, which was officially closed by the Australian government on Tuesday.

They fear for their safety if they move to new accommodations in a nearby township and have begged for help from New Zealand.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will meet the Australian leader Malcolm Turnbull Sunday and the Papua New Guinea detention centre is expected to be high on the agenda.

Canberra has so far rejected New Zealand’s offer to take 150 refugees because if they gain citizenship, they would then have the right to live in Australia.

Iain Lees-Galloway, the new Minister of Immigration, told Morning Report the current stand-off was not an ideal situation and a compassionate solution needed to be found quickly.

“That’s ultimately in the hands of the Australian government but our offer to take 150 of the refugees is still on the table.

“I really hope Australia does take up our offer. We’re here to help.”

One refugee on the island said Australia was torturing the men and their only hope was New Zealand.

New Zealand’s first former refugee MP Golriz Ghahraman said she hoped Australia accepted New Zealand’s longstanding offer to take the 150 refugees.

She said 150 was the comfortable number that could be housed at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre.

“My understanding is from that sector is that with bunking we could take it up to 250, and of course they do require wraparound services. The offer is there, so I think if they raise it seriously and it is accepted, that’s 150-250 lives.”

Ms Ghahraman said she was heartened to think Ms Ardern would raise the issue with her Australian counterpart, Malcolm Turnbull, when they meet in Sydney on Sunday.

The Australian Government has a record of being very unsympathetic to the plight of refugees.

These “refugees” are queue jumpers, taking an anarchistic solution and gambling that the feeble in Australia would take them in regardless.

That backfired on them and the option to return and join the back of the queue should be the only option offered by Australia.

Incredibly PNG offered them a new life but that would mean the welfare system of Australia (and by extension New Zealand) would not be on offer.

Best they can do is either accept the PNG offer or a free return to where they came from and in orderly fashion, join the queue of legitimate of refugees.

Note that Australia have absolutely and totally ruled out them getting into Australia, so a back door entry via New Zealand (and a New Zealand passport) is not on the cards for them.

          did already..hence the post.

          • “Kevin 07 then Julia Gilliard, monumentally stuffed up illegal immigration to The Lucky Country and thousands became New Strayans while other thousands died of drowning at sea in leaky tubs arranged by “people traffickers” who scammed people seeking a new life at pre embarkation fees of many thousands of dollars.
Johnnie Howard’s Boarders became porous and it took seriously concerted Operation Sovereign Border from the Abbott Government to end the rorts, bribery and piracy.

A few foiled illegals remain on Manus Island, an island territory of Papua New Guinea, leading to a ridiculous suggestion morons to seek their removal to this country.
What arrant stupidity, they are there because Straya Doesn’t want them to succeed in entering their country due to as many reasons as there are candidates.
Currently New Zealand has remarkable freedom of entry, work and residence and there are thousands who benefit.
A bad arse from Mannus gets to NZ and Nek Minit he is on a plane to Sydney, how will that go down, do they think Aus Immigration are stupid.
The wailing and gnashing is still palpable because The Aussie Gummint is sending New Zealanders who failed to gain citizenship, did bad things, then faced being deported back here, with Deputy Labour honcho Kelvin “Crim Hugger” Davis in the Van.

It will be a very sad day should the current freedoms of travel, work and retirement should be ended because a bunch of bad dudes decline to return to their homes as they are free to do, if Manus is not to their liking.
Bring them here and change will not be an adequate descriptive for the melt down.”

Well to be fair he is correct – if they stay in PNG they won’t get NZ or Aus welfare. But I doubt that welfare is anywhere close to being the main reason they don’t want to stay there.

The only circumstance i see for Australia sending Manus Island asylum seekers to NZ, is when they simultaneously cancel the special category visas for all NZers. Thus guaranteeing that can’t come and stay in Australia and utu for the Barnaby Joyce/Labour affair.

Australians are keen to renegotiate CER and put some space between the free entry New Zealanders have to Australia. Totally good excuse to reimpose those travel freedoms ALL New Zealanders enjoy.

If we look at how marginalised New Zealanders are in Australia (yet the government here exempts them from the new foreign home owners scheme), the erection of higher walls to entry be New Zealanders will be a given.

There was a discussion on Morning Report about that. UK and South Africans going to Eastern Australia; Indians and Chinese to Western and because of immigration and export education they are looking (more) to that direction. So a knock on effect of multiculturalism.
An academic wrote a history of how that policy came about. It showed how a tiny group were able to get the policy started despite it not being popular with peer or public. I think elites are well aware of this phenomena and the media are part of this.

Morena Gezza e bro. I meet some peeps from Uk a few years ago,who came to NZ to live, (sinking ship, drowning rats scenario).Who got their citizenship after due process.

When I got invited to their coming out party, I reminded them of their responsibility to NZ eg don’t be like that Nz’ er… ha …who killed his wife and left his daughter at a train station in OZ and then flew over to USA.
Every paper in the world reported NZ man blah blah blah … killed wife and left her body in the boot of her car outside their place.

Amazingly enough nz police walking past her car looking for her till the smell alerted them hmmm something dead in there.

Anyway people who saw blurry pikitia of him said “bloody maori”. But he was Chinese. I reminded these new NZ’ers of this and not to bring us down.
Their reply was “Oh no we not staying here, we did this long drawn out process to get to Australia.” Easy peasy. Off they went to the land of snakes and poisonous bugs galore.
Good ridance I thort. I wonder how many other imports used NZ to get to the supposed pot of gold that lies in Oz thru this slack process.
1 more day to go 😎

I can’t vouch for accuracy of much of what you say, but it sounds like you have done your homework.
Unfortunately the prevailing dominant cultures are intransigent on maintaining maximum power and go to great lengths to quash any move to independence. Ask the Catalonians or the Kurds. No expense spared to scuttle Scottish independence aspirations. Even a handful of parliamentary seats reserved for indigenous has a good number howling like stuck pigs.

Mostly I think you’ll find those are monolingual Pakeha rednecks who don’t represent the majority viewpoint.

A point to make about Catalonia is that a very substantial number of Catalans consider themselves Spaniards as well & do NOT want independence from Spain, which complicates matters. Something which has received a lot of commentary on Aljazeera tv.

With the Kurds it seems more straightforward – they have been wanting an independent state since forever.

  12. The tragedy of detaining asylum seekers on Manus Island will dog Australia for a long time. One problem is some of the detainees on Manus are gay, they have left their countries to escape persecution and homosexuality is illegal in PNG, so course they are afraid to leave the compound. Bring them to Australia it is the most cost effective and humane solution.
