Site notice

Around about now the number of comments posted here will pass the 200,000 mark. Thanks to all of you who contribute.

A primary aim here is to provide a forum for interesting and thought provoking information and encouraging robut debate safe from personal attacks.

This means trying to get a good balance between free speech, and not allowing suppression of free speech.

A couple of issues have arisen recently.

Pseudonyms

Someone who has previously commented here under a number of pseudonyms, and has at times refused to comply with generous conditions of participation, snuck back in under another pseudonym. This is frowned on, especially when intent is to attack people generally and people here, and attack the site.

Allowing the use of pseudonyms is important to enable people to comment here safely. Most people don’t abuse this privilege, but some do.

Also, it is unfair on other commenters if someone changes their identity. Don’t assume that everyone will guess, it is your responsibility to be up front.

If you want to change your pseudonym please either advise publicly in a comment, or privately to me if you have good reason to do this.

Use of names in comments

I have made it a rule here that the correct and full (or proper abbreviation) names (or pseudonyms) and names of parties and organisations be used.

This is because nicknames and shortened forms otherwise get abused by some people. A lot of variants may seem harmless to the use but may not be liked by the target. Mild abuse too easily escalates into tit for tat.

So it is simplest to just have a rule that proper names be used. This doesn’t detract from debate, it helps decent debate. We should be able to act like adults here.

Sometimes I may miss the misuse of a name, it may take me time to see it, or I may choose to ignore mild misuse or what I think are genuine abbreviations and variants.

In moderating I often judge intent, or the likelihood of escalation, and the past record of people also comes into it. This is imperfect, but I think it is less imperfect than other ways of doing it.

Genuine queries on moderation are fine, but I don’t want to get bogged down with trivial explanations.

Recently the use of Natz was questioned. Simple outcome – don’t use it. It has been used in an abusive way, so it is out.

A dictionary may say that it has become common for s and z to be interchanged. So feel free to choose between recognise and recognize.

But don’t use name alternatives, especially those that I have asked not to be used. That should be simple.

Repeat offenders risk having whole comments deleted, and also risk going into auto moderation if I get sick of editing and explaining. I don’t want to waste time on petty point scoring and trying to sneak around the guidelines.

Like the Speaker, and referees and umpires in sport, I rule on what see, imperfectly, and what I decide goes.

Again, thanks for your contributions, this is a community that thrives on a wide variety of ideas and information, and the decency of those involved with respect for people having different opinions.

(Posted this moments before I saw this thread, Pete, so have moved it as it sits better here.)
The title of this blog, Your NZ looks disturbingly like, Your NaZi. Pete, can you do something about this unconscious association? Your NS (New Sealand) perhaps? Many people, especially those on the Right are rightly sensitive to allusions such as you’ve (inadvertently) created with the name of your blog.

    • It looks just as stupid here Robert.

“Many people, especially those on the Right are rightly sensitive to allusions such as you’ve (inadvertently) created with the name of your blog.”

If you really have this ‘sensitive allusion’ I can’t help you.

It’s a curse. I’ll see it every time now, dammit!

Are you suggesting that the abbreviation “NZ” should be ban in all areas?

I had a feeling you were cursed with some kind of myopia, Robert. Commiserations.

Good that you have called out this bs, Pete. When I look at the title of this blog I just see ”Your NZ.”

What can I say? I didn’t take drama classes.

FYI, I’ve never made the “Nazi” association.

and I don’t know why the right would be sensitive about a socialist historical connotation.

While a use a pseudonym, my email address visible to PG is very clear as to my real name.

Good blog, I hope my humble contributions (hyperbole aside) are constructive.

NZ was probably around long before Nazi was. I loathe the word Nazi being used inappropriately or-worst of all-trivialised, of course, but NZ suggesting this ??? Hardly.

Alloy, a late friend knew someone who pronounced ‘hyperbole’ as ‘hyper-bowl’. The friend could never not read it as that again.

Congrats on getting to the 200,000 comments mark, PG. Your work here & your moderation are appreciated. Nobody’s perfect but you’re better than many on the moderation front.

An oasis of common sense in a sea of Roberts.
Congrats and keep up the good work

Guyanan parrots have the generic name Robert as ours are generically named Polly…it’s because they say ‘Robert’…and they do, too. But Guyanans may well find the name Polly for a parrot as funny as I find Robert.

          No offense, Robert,

  3. Thanks very much for providing this forum Pete. You do an excellent job of commentary and moderation.

I only hope you can keep it up. As I’ve said before, if you ever need a fiscal donation to tend to enhancing format or whatever, please let us know.

Thank you pete for your time and energy spent on this site.
You sometimes must feel like a kindergarten teacher,
without the 12 weeks yearly holidays.
I have been visiting this site for over 2 years and I have learnt heaps
from various commentors, from the left, the right and the Other’s.
Tautoko what trav said about donation..

Pete, I think you have things about right. Kiwiblog is basically not monitored at all. Pundit is pretty well a far left blog that will not allow much disagreement with the so called experts.

    Great job. Thanks.

Pete you do an absolutely stellar job compiling & publishing each & every day, and like others have said I think your moderation is about right. I really think this is one of the most diverse forums NZ has, and the fact that it hasn’t devolved into a partisan echo-chamber is an absolute testament to your hard work maintaining a productive environment.

I want to echo what others have said regarding donations for site upkeep, or even if you have a wish-list where we could buy you a Christmas prezzy? Amazon or something?

Yes – top effort PG. Great blog and you get it more or less right, more or less all the time, which is quite some feat given the provocations you have to deal with on a semi regular basis.

A blog like this is easy to take for granted, but you deserve great credit and thanks from all who comment and / or just sit and read.

I’ve said before I’m in awe at the time you put into posting here, Pete, let alone having to moderate the immoderate. Many thanks and happy Christmas.

I think youve got the balance pretty well right but like al I’m buggered if I know why you do it. It can’t pay very well. I recall an old Zen monks wise words about opportunity cost.

But I am curious to know what you honestly think about the overall standard of debate here.

Yuletide felicitations to you and yours

I try in my own way from time to time to lift the standard. It’s not easy. I was dropped on my head as a baby.

Blog moderation to me is a fascinating study in human behaviour. There are no rules of architecture …for a castle in the clouds

           /  December 14, 2017

Sure is C. Pete has the patience of a saint, and intervenes minimally. I recall a ‘situation’ a few months back, when somebody got ‘out of line’. Three of the ‘regulars’ had already given the ‘offender’ a ‘slap’, before Pete exercised his ‘power of veto’.

               /  December 14, 2017

Unlike G, I don’t keep the ‘hansard’ here. I’m just relying on my memory Corky 😛

    • It doesn’t pay at all, deliberately no means of revenue gathering.

I think the standard of debate and information sharing here ranges from very good to shite. Diversity of opinion is very good, which is a key aim.

      • Conspiratoor

         /  December 14, 2017

Agreed, and therein lies a dilemma. Some of the best debaters are also capable of plumbing new depths of insanity. Sorry the last word was an auto correct but somehow seems fitting so I’ll let it be

      • patupaiarehe

         /  December 14, 2017

It doesn’t pay, but it is obviously ‘rewarding’ Pete. Otherwise you wouldn’t keep doing it, Here’s how I see it…
Several years ago, you got banned from another site. Your ban was accompanied by a sarcastic comment about how “If you don’t like it, start your own fucking blog!”.
So you did, and just look at the ‘little monster’ that you have created!
WO refer to this place as a “Tumbleweed blog”, yet they view this site on a daily basis.
LF do the same, but are less obvious about it (unless one has admin privledges, & half a brain 😀 )
Please keep on doing what you do Pete. We love it, & they hate it. Can anyone else suggest a third reason?

        • LF appear to have given up. Too many victims was bound to catch up with them, and too much incompetence. The train wreck isn’t over yet but it’s way off the rails.

          • patupaiarehe

             /  December 14, 2017

Bit of a shame really. They did some really good ‘investigative work’, up until ‘someone’ decided to persue a ‘vendetta’. And only that individual knows why they did it. As always Pete, I strongly suspect that you would ‘host’ their ‘right of reply’ here.

            • patupaiarehe

               /  December 15, 2017

Judging by the downticks Pete, it is entirely possible that you are wrong…

  10. patupaiarehe

     /  December 14, 2017

Allow me to echo the comments above Pete, & say how much I appreciate your continuing efforts.

  11. Why? A whole range of reasons, I might write some history and post it.

Talking about ‘history’ – what happened to that bloke on here who said NZL First would get 20% on election day?

        • patupaiarehe

           /  December 14, 2017

He’s still here Pants. And he is honest enough to admit when he is wrong. He is I, & I am him. I got that one wrong, at this election anyway. Rather than ‘alluding’ to my past comments, without posting a link to them, how about you give me something to argue about??
