Gezza-did I tell about the young pook having what looked like flying practice ?

No, I don’t recall reading about that. I’m a bit concerned about one of my three.

I thought it was Bluebelle hiding in the crocosmia, sitting on a nest, but I now think it might be Pooky. I can just see its beak & forehead plate & it looks like an old bird, not a young one. Whichever one it is it hasn’t been out of its hiding place, & it hasn’t eaten for days.

I hope that the others are feeding whoever it is.Or that if it knows what it’s about, that the end is quick and painless for the poor bird.

        Bluebelle’s expecting again ! How exciting !!!

The young pook was running along and then rising into the air looking surprised and having a short flight.. It kept doing this-it was like the sort of dream where you run along, flapping your arms and find yourself flying. After ? times, pook must have realised that there was an audience-looked round-strolled off self-consciously. I have never seen anything so funny and endearing. One for the gallery of pook images, with the pooks running up the tree trunk and tightrope walking on the wire fence-and flying across the stream, misjudging the landing and falling in.

Yes I can well imagine your pook doing this. Mine attempt a few flying that don’t quite come off sometimes.

I think there is a nest down there. I decided to try & get up close to have a peek to see if Pooky was sick – and when I got about 3 feet away he flew out of his hiding place straight at me! 😮 I got a helluva shock! He’s a big bird with a sharp beak! I had to fend him off with my gumbooted foot!

He very clearly got ready down in the stream about 6 fee away to have another go & I backed off quickly. When I did he climbed up out of the water and went baci to the same spot. All 3 of them are usually very timid so it’s a good bet there’s a nest he was defending, even though I can’t see it.

Bluebelle had just come up for a feed of wheat a few minutes before, & Pooky had been wading in the stream a few minutes before that, then she went off foraging. I think they’d swapped shifts of sitting on the eggs. I’ve read that they share nest-sitting & pooklet-raising duties.

15 (!) not quite adult dux sitting on a lawn down the road today. How sweet.

Oh, lucky you having baby pookies on the way.

The pook was doing quite well with his run and fly…I was most impressed.
