‘…killed annually by…”

We should be concerned about the threat of jihadist terrorism, but this puts the actual level of threat into perspective.

And those American figures don’t even mention Oxicodin or medical misadventure …

Thanks for the perspective Pete … and everything you do ….

Merry Christmas one and all … Stay safe …

  2. Death by shark is so much more gruesome and spectacular than mosquito.

Over a course of weeks severe infection of the brain (cerebral malaria), with seizures, confusion, and increasing tiredness leading to coma
Fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema).
      Kidney failure.
      Abnormal liver function.
      Aplastic anemia.
A low number of white blood cells.
      Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Altered blood chemistry, including low sodium and lowered pH (lactic acidosis).
“Blackwater fever” (massive destruction of red blood cells, which causes dark-colored urine).\
leading to eventual myocardial dysfunction and death.

I guess with a shark it wouldn’t be prolonged?

I hope that we never have to find this out from experience.

I wonder if many of the cow deaths are road accidents. My stepfather hit one on the road and wrote off the car-he was lucky not to write himself off as well. It was dark, the cow was black and he was, of course, going at 100 when the car hit it. He not only had the horror of crashing, he had the terror of not knowing what had happened.

A cow that can go 100, what a beast.

What makes you think a cow is a “he”?

He can’t tell the difference, I suppose

.Should we (you) tell him about this ?

Nor can he tell when it’s appropriate to use mockery.

It would be possible to kill someone by hitting them with a beetle or dropping one on them from the top of a building. I don’t know how many times it’s been done, of course, but can’t believe that it never has been.

Any more cheerful facts to finish the year with?
The good news is it is raining on a very dry Taranaki this morning.

Oh, good-I hope it continues and comes down all day, enough to do some good. Is everyone dancing in it ? I am really pleased for you. It must be like an early Christmas present ! 🙂

I tried to dig up some soil to pot a marigold yesterday and couldn’t, it was like trying to dig concrete. The trowel wouldn’t go in, and it’s a good strong trowel.

And merry christmas and a happy and prosperous new year if we live that long 🙂

The thing about Islamic terrorism is not the number of people killed but the thought that these people will be a part of your society and the implications moving forward

They’d have to do it at a great rate to catch up with the other things. Even armed babies killed nearly three times as many in the US.

It says the average total is based on a 10 year average since 9/11, but it looks to me like it doesn’t include 9/11 in that average and it should – there were nearly 3,000 that year, as I recall. This also fails to take account of failed plots & the sheer amount of money & effort & resouce that now goes into detecting & preventing attacks. Averaging is not really very useful, it would be a better representation of reality to present the numbers of deaths & injuries per year.

9-11 was in 2001, so can’t be counted in a 10 year survey. It was 16 years ago.

One can’t count people who weren’t killed for any reason, it would be pointless. It’s like trying to count the people who weren’t killed by sharks because they didn’t go into the sea when sharks were there.

I’m assuming this refers to the number of Americans killed in the USA.

My point was it would be better to make it a 16 year survey, counting 9/11 – which is when Islamic terrorism really kicked off in the US.

The numbers of Americans killed by other Americans with guns is always worth including in a comparison though because that’s a major problem in & with their society & will probably always well exceed the number of Americans killed by anybody else in the US.

You can’t really do that-everyone knows about the Twin Towers and while they might not know exact numbers, they know it was a lot of people. 10 years is the usual number, I think. 9-11 was a single event, like the Grenfell Towers fire, and would skew the numbers. If the Tangiwai disaster and the Wahine one were used in surveys of people dying in train crashes and ferry sinkings long after they happened, they would make the numbers for each year seem much higher than they really were,

I think that it’s a very valid point that babies are almost three times as likely to kill Americans as terrorists.

I think it extremely unlikely that babies have killed any Americans with guns Kitty, let alone they have killed three times as many as terrorists.

There is no mention in those stats of babies killing Americans.
            It mentions killngs by toddlers.

  8. Family members say a Virginia couple tried to get their teenage daughter to end a relationship with a boyfriend whom the parents believed espoused neo-Nazi views.

Now that boyfriend, 17, has been charged with killing the parents.

After allegedly shooting the parents, the boy, of Lorton, Va., shot himself in the head, but has survived, police said. He remains unidentified because of his age.

On Dec. 17, Kuhn-Fricker sent an email to the principal of the Fairfax County, Va., private school that the daughter and her boyfriend attended, alerting the principal about her concern regarding the boy’s beliefs.

In the email, the Post reported, she attached images of the boy’s social media account in which he had retweeted messages praising Hitler, supporting Nazi book burnings, calling for “white revolution,” and making derogatory comments about Jews.

“I would feel a little bad reporting him if his online access was to basically be a normal teen, but he is a monster, and I have no pity for people like that,” the mother wrote in the email. “He made these choices. He is spreading hate.”

What a bloody shame. Two people dead because a monster like this was able to get a gun and shoot them for this reason-that they didn’t like his Nazi views. But the NRA has spoken and must be obeyed.

Imagine how the daughter must feel.

BUT BUT how can that be? internal war so the NRA can keep having guns that kill more people than the wars fought against muslims
