Gorgeous morning in North Welly. Incredible number of birds of all types around this Summer. More than usual. Some of them coming quite close to me as they’ve got used to being talked to. I could hear a soft chirpy trilling above me in a tree when I was looking down into the stream a half hour ago & when I looked up I could see a blackbird hen who’d been perching on the fence 3 feet away with some kind of grub in her beak on the edge of a new nest up there. That’s the third lot of blackbird chicks being raised this Summer.

There’ve been two lots of ducklings born so far to the local Mallard & grey duck hens about 6 weeks apart, & Blubelle the pukeko hen is sitting on her third nest this season (Bluey & Pooky are sharing nest-sitting duty). She’s cunningly hidden it with woven live foliage. None of her chicks so far have survived so I hope this lot do.

Lots of Red Admirals & Monarchs flying around the stream today.

There are lots of Monarchs here and some Red Admirals….and cicadas. I remember being at a meeting outside once, and we had to pass messages down the table because the cicadas were so noisy. It was a loud version of Chinese whispers.

I just managed not to suck a lizard up the vacuum cleaner and rescue it. It was in the bedroom, where I have never seen one before and was heading under the bed, the silly. It just dithered long enough for me to scoop it up and take it outside.

Bought some black pudding on a whim yesterday, although it turned out to be a Hellers one, label down, in a tray, heavily wrapped in cling film – and more brown than black. Tried it last night & it tasted bloody terrible. Taking the rest of it down my eel spot now to see if Elvira will get rid of it for me, & how many other eels turn up when they smell it. Don’t think I can beat the eel numbers seen in patu’s clip of his creek last nite, but my lot are a lot more refined than his rabble (imo) 😀

You do know what black pudding’s MADE OF ? I am amazed that it’s still on the market.

I miss my little waxeyes, but they will be back.

Righto. Elvira was out, downstream visiting somewhere. There was no one home at the stump. The only two who turned up were Granville & Tameiti. The black pud sinks slowly & the ducks were onto it in a flash, got half of it. But when Tameiti showed up they scarpered – he made it his priority to go after the ducks first. He didn’t bite them he just bumps them with his head & they jump up in the water & buzz off to a safe distance asap.

Tameiti got the rest. It was best to throw the pieces in just ahead of him & he could see them drfiting down & came up & gobbled them before they hit the bottom. Granville got one piece on the bottom, then Tameiti made him clear off. Elvira showed up late & missed the picnic.

Pooky had another go at me as I came back up. My path up is some distance from the nest with eggs that they’re all taking turns to sit on. I don’t want to disturb the nest but I might have to do something about Pooky to give him a fright. He’s getting a bit alpha male & stroppy with me. Can’t have that.

My musical obsession this week has been the New Romantic movement, which arose, initially in the UK, in 1979. It encompassed bands mainly in the New Wave/Synthpop genres who had commonalities in terms of fashion and lyrical themes. Here’s a couple of my favorites; I apologise in case this is all just way too uncool…

Thought I’d jump into the music-fest for once to share what us millennials are listening to when we’re not busy destroying society.

Here’s Currents by Tame Impala, probably the most talented Australian musician in decades:

There are insects on the moon…a form of tick, called lunar ticks.
