Yes, mine too. (I’m glad there’s finally some 80s music that’s considered acceptable on this thread lol) As cover versions go, this one is fantastic.

        • I like to discover new or old music and my Starred list on Spotify is seriously weird. Spotify the best music app. What did I do before?

I had a quick look over the fence around 10am & Bluey was sitting on the nest. Told him he was a good boy & he looked round & did a quiet single squawk back at me. Just as I was going to go away leave him in peace, I saw young Aspen swimming along from upstream with a chunk of bread in his beak. The pooks usually gobble bread up as soon as they get it so I watched him as he climbed up to the bank at my eel spot, walked along the parenga through the foliage, & took it to the nest, cooing when he got there.

Bluey got up & let Aspen feed it to Pickles. First Aspen tried to give the whole chunk to Pickles but he quickly realised it was too big, so he picked it up again & broke off tiny pieces, and fed him those. Very cute.

Bluey walked up to me while this was happening & asked nicely for some wheat. I think he’s doing the main protector / caregiver role at the moment. They are all very gentle & attentive with the chick. Although they all go off upstream & downstrean foraging they all come back to the nest regularly, & all of them jump up on the fence & come into my backyard asking for wheat at different intervals two or three times a day.

I once saw a puk of pooks, adult, young adult, child and baby…it was a lovely sight. Baby pooklets are enchanting.

My birds are given little cubes of bread and like it. Take it or leave it, birdies. I saw a sparrer having a lovely time outside a caff-three people had left a large amount of their lunches and sparrer was stuffing himself at this smorgasbord. I’m glad that it wasn’t entirely wasted. Fancy paying for all that food and then leaving it. My birds would have thought that they’d died and gone to heaven if I put that out on the bird table.

Who? Is this Aspen fella … brother to Pickles? cuzzy maybe?

      • That is cute. Almost David Attenborough. I’m picturing you lurking about the shrubbery with a deep voice.

Steady rain been falling in North Welly for the past hour. I’ve had a peek over the fence each time a pooky has jumped up on the fence to ask for wheat (Bluey wasn’t impressed with an offering of a coule of wet bread chunks earlier today – he ignored it & asked for the good stuff). Each time they’ve made sure there’s one of them keeping Pickles warm & dry.

The stream’s risen already & will rise further with the runoff from the hills E, S & W hills. Whoever built the nest built it lower down on the parenga than I would’ve recommended if consulted, but they can move the chick up higher if the water level rises. This pook family is burning thru my wheat supply. My fence is now the first point of call for the every time there’s a shift change or a nest visit. Bluey’s still doing the longest shifts, the others just fill in when he needs a stretch & some grub.

Such a beautiful voice & such a lovely woman. I’ve loved her singing ever since I heard her first hit with the Stone Ponys. She was credited by Glen Frey with being one of the originators of Country Rock. She recruited & Don Henley & him as backing musicians before they went on to form The Eagles. Persuaded her reluctant record company to let her do an album entirely in Spanish. She did two. They went platinum the day they were released.

I didn’t realise she had to retire in 2012 after Parkinson’s disease (at age 67) made it impossible for her to sing any more.

I think it was Trav who posted a track from Joss Stone yesterday. As I’ve mentioned before, she is a ‘dead ringer’ for my ‘ataahua wahine’. If she learned to sing like Ms Stone, I could retire from my day job, and live off her earnings from impersonating her ‘doppelganger’ 😀 .
I’ll never forget the first time we saw Joss Stone on MTV, the look on my wife’s face was priceless!

Gezza … Who? Is this Aspen fella … brother to Pickles? cuzzy maybe?

I’m not sure where Aspen came from, nor where Sweetie came from, Possum. I suspect from parents upstream. When I got back from Northland on 14 December, Pooky, the big koro who’s lived near me for about four years, had gone, & so had Bluebelle. Pooky’s only paid me one brief visit since, so I think he’s moved on further downstream to a new territory. Bluebelle is nowhere to be seen but I hope she’s gone with him & is ok.

They were a happy, relaxed couple for two years until Bluey showed up & both males then stressed Bluebelle out constantly chasing her, as she screamed, thru the undergrowth, mounting her repeatedly. It’s why she lost both broods of her chicks. They forced her to abandon them, making her run away from their bizarrely obsessive breeding competition.

I have a heartbreaking film clip of the last time I saw Jojo, the only one of twins left alive, as Bluebelle had to abandon her, cheeping, on a steep bank & flee from their depraved sexual assaults one evening. It was really odd. Pooky had a rather laid back character, hardly ever got aggro with the ducks, only if they stole his wheat while he was eating it. Bluey’s always been a right bastard to them, just because he can.

But he was always nice to me. There’s no way I’ll go near HIS nest or chick, he’ll go me, but he still comes up to the fence & asks nicely for food, & he doesn’t mind me having a quick look at Pickles as long as I tell him he’s a good boy & don’t stand there staring for too long.

I dunno who laid the egg(s). Maybe Bluebelle. As they usually have twins or triplets, I’m wondering if one of the two big aggressive rats I see around the stream sometimes might have raided the nest. At an educated guess, Pooky is about 5 or 6, Bluey’s 2, Aspen’s 1, & Sweetie would be about 5 months old max – she still hasn’t got full length tail feathers. I think Sweetie’s possibly too young to have bred yet. She rejected Aspen’s advances yesterday.

You can’t fight nature G. As a human, you can intervene when nature seems unfair, since you are fortunate enough to be a member of the ‘dominant species’…
