Damn, just saw on Media Watch that Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries has died. Too much awesomeness has been lost.

Sad news alright Phantom. She had a truly unique & beautiful voice. I always found their music a bit ‘drony’, except for this one. RIP Dolores 😦

Here’s some her solo work which you probably haven’t heard; it’s simple but effective.

Pickles might have stumpy little penguin wings at the moment but as you can see the wings on adult pukekos are magnificent. And that’s not full stretch.

I often see them across the stream having a groom in the sun on the far parenga but you have to be quick to catch them when they sometimes fully stretch them both out at the same time. Their wings are huge. They look like vultures’ wings.

Taken on 8 Jan, while it was raining. Light and camera for this one poor, unfortunately. I couldn’t resist going up and talking to & trying to video this tui because it had been sitting on my fence for some time & it was so blue, all across its back and its wings. I’ve never seen one so noticeably blue before. (Possum you’ve seen the full clip.) Has anyone else?

The one I photographed in the Bird Hotel tree looked very blue and iridescent, but this didn’t show up in the photo. I love it when one looks black-and then the light makes them look like THIS.

anecdote from George Clinton funkmeister from group Parliament..

Norman, Oklahoma. 1978. A girl came up on the stage in overalls. Dropped her pants to her ankles. Turned around. Put a joint up her butt. And blew three smoke rings. We couldn’t finish the show because we couldn’t stop laugh. We tried 3 or 4 times to continue. Even took a break and we couldn’t stop laughing.

        you just don’t recognise…talent.

I do, but don’t see anything talented about such a vulgar display. Nor do I see this as the place for this sort of crude wannabe humour. It’s puerile and indecent-no talent in that story.

people are interested in music…Clinton and his band Parliament are synonymous with…funk.Life is not all straight laced english teachers and repressive presbyterian values. The world is a diverse and interesting melting pot of cultures and expression. It has passed you by.

The expression is strait-laced, as strait means narrow, not straight-laced which means nothing at all.

One doesn’t need to be an English (note capital for proper name) or a Presbyterian (note capital for proper name again) to find the idea of someone blowing smoke out of their bum unfunny and crude. This has nothing to do with music.

Your last sentence is what one would expect. How many countries have you been to ? How many languages have you learned ?

I can assure you that anyone who has read literature from the Classics (Latin and Greek, the latter in translation, of course) to the present day will have read things much more graphic than the smoking bum. Have you read Petronius, Jonathan Swift and other Augustan writers and Philip Roth ? I have.-and many, many others.
