It’s been ‘a day of little things’, but the rain has cooled the air a bit-let us be thankful for small mercies :-/

Oh No Mss Not up here in the Bay of Islands.
it is hot muggy and did I say HOT!!!!!
This morning it was raining and cold so the wood stove went on for cooking
the pizzas and heating the water… didn’t take long.
Did some washing and hung it out under the veranda and its dry as a bone now.
I can’t handle the heat outside, so I’m hiding from it and having a laff at some of the
      little skits written here.
Were is Gez and the daily wild life vid.
Got to say the little pooklet pookling is growing up mighty fine,
All those Dads she has, some different species.
I know she is a she because she has grace n elegance not unlike you know who. 😉

Celebrating a young lady’s birthday here today. Gave her a card that said “Follow your dreams, they know where to go.”

        Helping her do just that.

Happy Birthday to you (young lady) may all your dreams come true. 😀😉

Thanks Possum. This young lady may not be the one you think – my wife’s son’s fiance has big ambitions and our fingers are crossed for her.

It has still been necessary to have fans on, but they have been a bit lower. My washing didn’t dry-at least not the undies which were out but under cover. The temp was about 26, which seems cool by comparison-it was higher than that last night.

That wife’s son’s fiancee sounds like a word puzzle.

Oh, there is going to be one of the Dambusters pilots on the news. I loved the documentary about the Spitfire being rebuilt.

It was stinking hot yesterday-very humid-my clothes were stuck to me when I arrived home. It was beastly hot last night (thank Heaven I bought extra fans and have two in the bedroom) No wonder people lose their tempers in such weather.

    Hiya Possum

As requested. Wet day here. The Pooks took Pickles walkabout today. Might be building a new nest southwards – the current one’s getting a bit of a too-lived-in look & I don’t think they’ll manage a redecorate. Too much foliage been trampled down to give cover now, & their rubbish heap at the edge of the nest is getting pretty full.

This is Hetty. She’s a dunnock hen. Pretty fearless for a hedge-sparrow. She’s cottoned on to the fact the pooks & ducks get wheat & keeps an eye out. When they appear, she usually does too.

Quite funny when she hops about on the ground over the fence, stealing grains from the pookies. She generally summons up to a dozen other dunnocks – mostly hens, & I put seed in the fence flower box for them to lure them away from the pooks and ducks.

(Doesn’t really like being videoed. I was lucky to get this footage – I’ve slowed it down a bit.)

I have those-they are very sweet, There are who knows how many fantails in the garden, chaffinches are back and the wee bellbirds are around, bless them. I don’t know why this garden is the birds’ home, but I am glad that it is. Kingfishers-waxeyes-blackbirds-thrushes-an odd tui-dux and geese fly over and there are quite a few hawks around.

I have even seen an occasional shining cuckoo !!!

That dunnock’s just being coy. She’s walking TOWARDS the camera. ‘Oh ! a camera ! Where did that come from ?’

There was a minuscule mantis outside-I thought it was a blade of grass that had blown.

Your location & garden sound like a bird paradise, Kitty. You’ve got more bird species up there than I see here. Fantails are rare at the moment. Have some waxeyes, saw one yellowhammer a week ago, finches (also rare though – I’m told if you hang fat out you’ll get finches?), a pair of regular visitor tuis, the very occasional little black shag, and pied shag. Lots of blackbirds, a few thrushes, starlings, rarely a small squadron or lone flyer welcome swallow, grey warblers, & I have recorded but not seen a shining cuckoo.

Black-backed gulls sometimes assemble in huge numbers on the roof of a large building opposite. You can tell the wind direction from the way they all face. Only seen one kingfisher this season. The rurus are silent at the moment. None around I guess.

I have a stunning array of different coloured ducks in the stream at the moment. One predominantly white piebald one has a band on its leg. Dunno whether it’s a hen or a drake. There are two very pretty fawn coloured ones I think are hens. There are about 5 that look just like Charlie. A couple I can tell apart from their different colour under-wing flashes.

Have you photographed or videoed any of the birds you post about on your cellcam? I’d love to have seen a clip of the one ice-skating on the frozen surface of the bird bath.

My cellcam is useless, the videos are so poor that it’s not worth bothering.

Have you tried setting the vidcam to a higher resolution? Both my old 2mp cellcams’ default settings were medium resolution and I had to play with the settings & light level & contrast to get good vids. What’s the max resolution or size setting?

That said, yes I have to get up really close with my old cellcams & they’re ok for big birds that let me do that, but not very good for distance shots or vidclips of small birds. You have to hold the camera really steadily too. I got better with mine as I got lots of practice.

This is from around noon on Monday. Every now and then when there’s a group of ducks having a “groom and wash” they go into a frenzy like this. I missed most of it. These are a few late performers. Sometimes they dive right under and power along underwater like torpedos for 6 feet or so.

You only get clear images if you set windows media player to a smaller size than full screen with 2 megapixel cameras unfortunately. The smaller the screen, the clearer the images. I played with the light settings in this – you can see the change it makes.

I’m glad I caught the monarch by accident – lots of them about but bloody hard to get them to cooperate on camera.

She’s coy all right. She gets up closer to me than that sometimes. But no, not when I whip out a cellcam ! Not having any of that! See my agent first. I’m outa here dude !

She was hopping around in the tree you can see before she jumped onto the fence. I don’t think she likes being stared at thru devices !

Here’s Pickles, Bluey, & Sweetie, about two hours ago. 2mp cellcam. Right below me. Pickles is getting fed wheat by her parents & also picking up her own grains. Aspen is out of camera bringing Pickles some winged insect for protein.

Awwww what can I saw butt She is growing into a black beauty alright.
Hope she gets out and sees the world a bit before she becomes a mother. Hope she chooses her partner and father to her babe pookies with extreme care.
Have you thought about caging her up to protect her. No … oh well worth a try!!!!!
