From this morning. Incredible how fast this pooklet is growing.

Gets out and about these days. Still has to have an afternoon nap. Doesn’t want to. Down in the nest with Sweetie at the moment – protesting!

And this is Aspen. Some days he seems to almost live in my backyard. Enjoys all the free facilities. Likes to come up to the kitchen window & chat if he sees me. Here he is around 2pm today, having a restaurant water before his salad.

Am I imagining it, or is someone holding Pickles’ foot to stop the pooklet running away ? It looks like it.Have you seen the car ad with the geese crossing behind it, safe because of the rear vision ? The bird bath is being well used at the moment, but I wish that they wouldn’t splash so much out. Some dimwits confuse the bath and drinking bowl.

I hope that that is Evian or something similar, not just Chateau Hose.

It is horribly hot-over 30 outside, just on it inside even with the fans on. I do hate having sweat running into my eyes.

Wellington tap water, with chlorine long-evaporated off, supplemented with a fair amount of rainwater, we’ve had quite a bit of rain off and on, including at night, over the last four or five days – probably excellent-tasting to a pukeko.

Aspen’s a regular visitor to the orange bucket. I had a sapling standing in it for a couple of months and noticed he used to drink out of it. When I took the sapling out a couple of weeks ago I cleaned it out and keep it topped up because he likes a drink from there. The hard part has been catching him on video. He usually has a good long drink whenever I don’t have a mobile on me & stops when I get back to the scene with one.

No, Pickles’ foot isn’t being stood on. Bluey HAS sometimes stood on Pickles’ foot though, to keep the pooklet’s attention while he’s feeding her. These days he lets her run around. She’s getting bowled over & pushed aside by the ducks a few times though.

This was this afternoon. Feeding before her nest nap. I didn’t get it on video but drake here had earlier bumped Pickles into the kanuka tree trunk at the top of the clip. Daphne Duck drives the poor drake off whenever he starts eating any wheat I give him, & both ducks throw caution to the wind and barge around grabbing wheat for the pooks. They’re a nusisance really.

Eventually one or more of the pooks will have a go at them, especially if they’ve bumped the pooklet or stolen from her – but they always come back wanting more. You know what Europeans are like!

Someone DOES grab Pickles’ foot-but the foot is pulled away as the grabber just grabs a toe. .Pickles then turns and beaks off with a lot of cheek.

What huge feet pooklets have. I do hope that I see some again on the walkway, It’s worth going just for that.

The bird table and birdbath are given Eau de Tap 1918. Anyone who doesn’t like it can find their own water..

No, there’s no grabbing of Pickles’ foot. That’s just Sweetie pulling aside grass looking for a wheat grain close to one of her talons. Pickles is just quickly switching from one feeder to another. She was actually happy picking up her own grains but the adults are still pre-programmed to feed her & she still reponds to their special feeding whimper.

Pickles’ talons have quickly grown far longer in proportion to her body than they will be when she’s a bit older.
