    Stream Update
Beautiful morning here in North Welly. Pickles is still growing at a phenomenal rate. She was only about 3 inches tall when I first saw her on 4 January. She’d be around 7 inches now. Getting very confident & feeding independently between adult feeds. Looks up at me when I feed them, a bit wary. The adults are very relaxed as long as I’m over the fence.
She reminds me so much of a fuzzy little black kiwi at this stage of development.

She’s making different noises now. No longer keeps up a constant, insistent cheeping for attention but makes a variety of different chirps, including one particular low continuing “wheep … wheep … wheep” when she’s had enuf food & plonks herself down for a rest, or is sent to the nest for the nite or a nap.

That duck hasn’t got a name yet, she’s one of two orange-tip-billed hybrid hens who’re turning up regularly at feed time. She’s not game to run in amongst the pukekos like Daphne Duck is, but this one’s smart enuf to have worked out that if she flies over the fence – like she did yesterday and earlier this morning – I’ll feed her from my hand. Experience tells me some others will watch & eventually imitate.

There are 2 separate groups, totalling about 30 ducks, all young, who cruise the stream presently. They seem very tribal. Occasionally some of them chase others away for no reason I can see except that maybe they’ve cruised into another group & just aren’t welcome.

When birds want to check you out closely, they turn their heads to the side and stare at you directly with one eye. I’ve noticed that any duck cruising the stream that swims by and does this will soon climb up the path from my eel spot to the top of the bank looking for food. A few have lifted off lately to fly up from the water but have suddenly spotted 3 large pukekos right below in their intended landing zone and spun around & abandoned the attempt mid-flight.

This is another sight I sometimes see. All the waterbirds groom regularly and wash themselves thoroughly in the stream at least once a day. But they all have mites and the pooks can’t get at the ones on their necks and heads. So they approach another one, put their beak to the ground & whimper for the other one to get the little blighters for them. Sometimes, but not always, the groomer will then ask the other one to return the favour.

The dog’s lion startled a pukeko that was doing the equiivalent of talking to itself in a low voice….pukeko is one sound that the lion doesn’t do so well. It leaped up with an odd ‘SKWOKKK !’ noise and flew away and fell into the stream.

Oh, it’s disGUSTINGLY hot. I mowed this morning and came in dripping with sweat and dehydrated after an hour and a half. It’s in the 30s now and hitting 30 inside.

We had a thunderstorm last night with a sudden rainburst that didn’t last long but was heavy while it did.The light was exraordinary for ages before and after-very yellow and almost like electric light..

Pretty sure we just had a small earthquake jolt. Small though. A gentle southerly occasionally wafting up the stream but it’s 38° & muggy in the backyard at my place in North Welly right at the moment. Might leave the lawns till later.

Whoops. 70 km North of French Pass. It’d be generally unnoticeable, just made the whole house go ‘crack!’ & a wobble.

A Bombardier flew over earlier & I decided to watch it come in to Wn Airport on landing approach on the live webcam at Evans Bay. They take about 2 minutes to appear after flying over. I could see yachts sailing in the bay & it’s a gorgeous day there too:

Where on earth do the weather people take the temperatures ? They never seem to resemble what it’s like where anyone lives. I bet that nowhere around Wellington witl be up in the 30s on 3, and nor will anywhere in the Waikato,

No, they weren’t, but we can’t both have imagined it.Nor can someone I know in Wanganui be imagining it.

We seldom have earthquakes here-last time I was in Wellington, it put a little one on for me. i daren’t look at the outside thermometer, it’s 34 inside except where the fans are-four have reduced the sittingroom to a cool (haha) 30.

It’s been like this for what-three months now ? (faints)

Does anyone remember Buchanan’s Black and White Whisky with the dogs ? The ashtray that was in the opshop free section has come up nicely, even the white dog shows up fairly well. It’s a real retro item and was worth the little effort that cleaning it up took.

Yep I remember them. The black one was always a Scots Terrier. Dunno what the white one was.

I always thought that he was also one, but now think that he’s a West Highland White or something like that. I am pleased with my retro find, and am glad that it has cleaned up so well. As I wasn’t sure how fast the dogs and bottle were, I cleaned them carefully and the rest with a cotton bud dipped in Jif.
