Looks like Winstons best mate is being briefed by Whaleoil and sucked into his personal agenda.

“A major study of the tourism industry shows businesses are confident the boom will continue but remain worried about infrastructure gaps and a shortage of Kiwis to work in the sector.”

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11984778

The whole neoliberal economic conundrum – which we are all part of, like it or not – summed up in one ‘report’.

” … inadequate infrastructure constrains growth but it also has a negative effect on the visitor experience … Survey participants also noted the lack of domestic labour in front-line positions is detracting from the Kiwi experience for visitors …

One said ” … we are taking away a uniquely New Zealand experience for our international guests by employing huge numbers of cheap migrant workers in front-end jobs.””

Presumably they want to employ cheap Kiwi workers in front-end jobs?

The ‘privatized’ tourism boom will continue provided it gets corporate welfare from socialized infrastructure and socially-provisioned ‘educated’ labour … without paying any more tax …

… both of which National had 9 long years to correct … Yes?

Except that austerity-social welfare – socialism – including infrastructure provision, education etc somehow wouldn’t allow them to … Presumably because they’d be breaking with ideology and asking for more “other people’s money”? This despite ongoing and considerable corporate welfare both overt and covert …

Or is there another way of doing it? Like … umm … the industry pays for the excess infrastructure required … and pays for the education of its requisite low paid workforce …?

Maybe the Charitocracy could build infrastructure and educate the Precariat? Start a Give-a-Little page!?

Who are these “other people” anyhow?

Seems like we traded a negative bureaucratic driven government model, for a neo-liberal open market.

I will take the latter any day.

” Lack of domestic labour in front-line positions” has nothing to do with neo -liberalism, and everything to do with poor management decisions, or a company operating on a shoestring budget.

… but mostly ‘good’ economic management and poor social management decisions by the government …

Maybe neoliberalism has driven down wages to the point where even relatively poorly educated Kiwis don’t want to work for a pittance …?

Tehehe Corky … “warts and all” … Yeah, Right! You very often seem very unhappy indeed with what you perceive as NZ’s “warts” … like a chronic malcontent …

I’m just chronically interested in making Aotearoa New Zealand a better place for everyone … “We all do better when we all do better” … ya know?

Anyhow, sorry to hear you’re staying …

You are right and wrong at the same time. There’s a difference in our unhappiness, but I don’t know how to word it.

I’ll get back to you on the one. For starters though the word fanatic comes to mind. You rarely criticise the Left, whereas I’m quite liberal in my criticism of the so called right..

But that’s still not it. Lets hope something comes to me. I’d hate you going away empty handed.

Yes I like Trev in the Chair at Question Time. He certainly seems to be tidying it up & keeping it more focussed. Not a lot for the Oppos to work with at the moment becos Govt Ministers don’t seem to anything concrete in the way of detailed plans yet & everything gets put into the “wait for the budget” pigeonhole.

Not looking foward to Question Time when Winston’s acting PM. God he spouted some burbling nonsense today standing in for Jacinda. Trev’ll need tranquilizers.

Had to smile when – was it Amy Adams? – tried to get her question to the Minister of Corrections transferred to a day when Kelvin was present. The Oppos had a bit of fun with Winston saying this government was gonna stop police giving warnings to young offenders & charge them, & then having to explain how the Minister of Corrections was going to reduce the prison population. Big disconnect there.
