Nothing surprises me much any more

It turns out that the FBI agent who many conservatives believe secretly plotted to take down President Donald Trump may have actually helped get the president elected.

CNN has obtained emails that show that FBI agent Peter Strzok co-wrote the first draft of the letter that then-FBI Director James Comey sent to Congress in October 2016, announcing that the bureau was reopening an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. That letter set off a political firestorm just 11 days before the presidential election and hurt Clinton at the polls — so much so that it may have swung the election in favor of Trump.

This development potentially throws a wrench in conservative theories that Strzok sought to undermine Trump in the run-up to the election, and that special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation is tainted by anti-Trump bias.

Those Trump supporters who cling desperately to the “deep state/IC coup” story line seem to conveniently forget that they were all singing Comey’s praises when he announced the re-opening of the Clinton investigation. The horde have proven that they will turn on anyone who dares to act counter to Trump’s interests. Note the following:

      Mueller is a life-long Republican.

Rosenstein is a life-long Republican, and was appointed by Trump, a Republican, and approved by top Republicans.

      Comey was a Republican.

      Wray is a life-long Republican.

The FBI is (was) one of the most Republican-leaning agencies.

Yet all of these people are suddenly pariahs, and it’s the exact same people whose work is counter to Trump’s current interests. What’re the chances?

I think you’re missing the point Mefro – Trump was a lifelong Democrat until he ran as a Republican.
He is anti the establishment and is tolerated at best by the Republican organisation, and vilified by many in the party.
The party leanings of the FBI and investigation team members is not so important as their interest in preventing the status quo from being upset.

That’s an interesting theory. Regardless, my post kills the narrative that “the Russia thing” has been cooked up by the Democrats to undermine Trump.

If Mueller is registered today as a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, it is not clear. The last time this was known was in 2001. As he was considered for FBI director by the Bush administration, the Washington Post reported that he was a registered Republican. In the same report, though, it was noted that he is considered by most to be “apolitical,” and that he had a history of pushing Democrats for temporary openings, even under a Republican president.

However he was certainly a buddy of Comey. There were many establishment Republicans hostile to Trump including the Bush famiy.

Likewise Rosenstein seems to be apolitical:

Comey was a registered Republican for most of his life, but has recently described himself as unaffiliated. – wikipedia. And voted for Jimmy Carter.

Mueller, appointed by W Bush, was a Republican in 2001 when he was 56. WaPo report that “he still was as of 2017.” (source, but probably fake news since it’s not favourable to Trump.)

When appointed, Paul Ryan said about Mueller “My priority has been to ensure thorough and independent investigations are allowed to follow the facts wherever they may lead. The addition of Robert Mueller as special counsel is consistent with this goal, and I welcome his role at the Department of Justice.”

Rosenstein, from your article: “little is known about Rod Rosenstein’s own political views, he theoretically aligns with the Republican party”. W Bush nominated him for a judgeship in 2007, but was blocked by Democrats because he didn’t have enough Maryland roots. Other sources frequently call him a “registered Republican” (source source source.

Comey stated in June 2016 that “I have been a registered Republican for most of my adult life, not registered any longer.” (source). That is why I used the past tense in my description of him above.

      TRUMP LOYALTY OATHS

To COMEY: “I need loyalty. I expect loyalty.”

      (COMEY was fired.)

To MCCABE: “For whom did you vote [in the election]?”

      (MCCABE was forced into retirement.)

To ROSENSTEIN: “Are you on my team?”

(TRUMP is using the Nunes Memo to justify firing ROSENSTEIN.)

Politics isn’t for pansies. Root for Winfrey if she runs. Mediocrity is the hallmark of liberals.

I dearly hope Winfrey doesn’t run. Current events are a clear sign that we should remove the celebrity from the body politic.
