    Dang. Went outside to say hi to Sweetie & give some wheat at 8.25 am & she’d jumped up onto the high trellis outside the kitchen window. Thought she’d just jump down & run along the lawn to like Aspen does (this is usually his trick, not hers) so I didn’t pull my camera out.

    Instead she just silently flew the length of the yard & landed four feet in front of me. Would’ve been a brilliant video clip.

    She’s an accomplished flyer. She doesn’t signal her upcoming flights with loud announcements, or shriek in flight, or on landing, like the boys do. She just gets on with it & does the business with no fuss. Flew up the stream from down South & quietly curved in to land on the parenga below me last week, in the rain, when she heard me talking to Pickles & Aspen. Best piece of sustained pukeko flying I’ve seen yet.

      PS: I’m out of wheat. Have to ring up Pet Essentials in the Rua & get them to make up another $20 supply for me. Young Pickles has made huge inroads into my supply.

        On the avian creatures ( though your mates are mostly more grounded and I see why) I’m out to the hides at Ambury Park, Mangere Bridge this week to see the departing Godwits.

          Oh, cool. Taking some pics/vids? You’ve got good camera gear. I saw a news item a week or so ago, noting that heaps of their stopover estuaries (in China, I think) have been getting infilled for development & numbers have been dwindling. The Chinese government had agreed to not touch the remaining estuaries.

            Yeah, but as these birds have been adapting in one way and another for an age I can’t begin to fathom, I’ll remain optimistic. Hope they’ve a lot more adapt left in them. They’ll need it.

              * endurance.
              Gotta go. Murray’s making up the wheat bags & said I’d be there in 20 mins. All four pooks just turned up in a couple of minutesfrom different directions & got the last of the current supply. Sweetie’s happily agreeing to feed from my hand this morning. Gorgeous.

              Monarch butterflies leave everyone else standing when it comes to endurance.

            @Kitty
            Yes – lovely creatures, Monarchs. Their feet feel funny on your hand. They seemed to be everywhere yesterday.

            There are 5 of them on this purple-flowered bush, but the sunlight when I took the clip was so bright, & the cellcam not a high enuf definition, that unfortunately you can’t see the ones just standing on or hanging off the flowers.

          Must’ve been South Korea that’s agreed to stop expanding cities into their estuaries.

        Godwit are world travellers. What a distance they fly, their poor little wings,
        non-stop for 8-9 days.
        “They do not breed until their third or fourth year,
        so each southern winter there are hundreds of non-breeding birds
        remaining in New Zealand”.
        Power to the Godwit clan.

      I wish I could go, give a wave off to the godwit from us. 😉

              It appeared in a rather unfortunate wrong place & looked a bit insulting to a wildlife unit. Possibly that got noticed.

    Young Pickles. The little devil doesn’t seem to want me to video his wings, he conned me into thinking he was going to walk up the bs blockwall this morning – but I got a wing flap just before I hit the stop button.

    Those wings were just pathetic little stumps 3 weeks ago. An embarrassment to the family. Look at them now! That’s m’boy. 😀

    PS: Me & the pooks don’t let howling freezing winds and rain stop us going out in it n doing photo shoots n making movies n stuff – unlike some people (no names though). 😉

        I have become a real twitcher since I have lived here. This garden and the area have an astounding variety of birds.

          Yeah, I’m lucky too. I can go out in extreme weather and watch n film birds n eels n stuff because it’s all happening just over my back fence. And often they come to me. I don’t have to worry about traffic n flooded roads n fallen power-lines etc.

          Worst thing that’s happened so far is slipping and ending up in the stream twice. Luckily when it was at its most serene & not even deep enuf to fill me gummies.
