This seems less than ideal for social mobility & meritocracy.

… but great for neo-feudal social stratification and plutocracy …

Which, I conclude, must be what ‘the powers that be’ want, Right?

If we lived in a ‘democracy’ and we didn’t want iniquitous social stratification and financial aristocracy, we’d vote it out, wouldn’t we?

Or could it be that it isn’t clear our most selfish individual choices inexorably lead to it …?

I think the majority still benefit from the current situation, and most people vote in self-interest. I’d ask them to take a more moral route.

@Mefrostate – “I think the majority still benefit from the current situation …”

Yes, a couple of years ago I used to rate the “majority still benefit” at 65% – 35% but indications now are it’s more like 58% – 42%. A recent survey indicates 42% of Kiwis are struggling to make ends meet. This begs a couple of questions …

          1) Must we wait until the ‘have-nots’ go over 50% to recognize a dysfunctional system and affect any change?

          2) Is ‘democracy’ or “majority rule” a sufficiently useful enough system if it results in this iniquitous situation for a near majority or eventual majority of the population?

On 1) You can’t change human selfishness, but you can appeal to other aspects of their humanity and hope for the best.

On 2) Democracy may have its flaws, but I can’t think of a better alternative.

No worries. All National’s fault. 😡

Grant & Phil are gonna fix this problem. 👍🏼

      🤔 Aren’t they? 😳

Twyford’s not putting in place all of the policy I’d like, but at the very least he’s not ignoring the existence of the issue.

        • Yes, it’s a bit rich of National to claim some sort of credibility on dealing with housing.

But Twyford looks too easily drawn into petty squabbling. He should ignore National and do his job.

Fair enough on that last point, although when Collins is constantly making absolutely pathetic points like this, this and this, I feel like he has a right to return fire from time-to-time.

            • He’s allowing himself to get played and distracted by Collins. He doesn’t seem to have moved on fully from being an Opposition MP.

Perhaps, but is your position then that the government should focus only on getting the job done, and ignore criticism made in public by the opposition?

I’m hoping that “absolutely pathetic points like this, this and this” reflect very poorly on National, perhaps even to some of their own followers … ?

I responded to one of those tweets asking whether there were any National supporters who actually thought it was a good point, and none of them replied 😦

Can’t get the link from your 2nd ‘this’ to work. The third one – is Judith batshit crazy?

Judith’s 3rd tweet I’d just have screen-shotted & put in the file for later.

Her 2nd – Jesus. Phil’s not got a lot upstairs to work with, imo. He’s a vacuous smarmy, adolescent, dickhead in the House most the time. She knows it. He got played & sucked right in there.

Yeah fair enough, the second one seems to be more about Collins defending herself rather than attacking him. And he got drawn into it in the comments.

Twyford/ Labour deserve all they get – Kiwibuild is but a pipe dream with nothing of substance behind it. They have made a start at least in announcing housing projects that National had already organised before leaving office.

They deserve all they get *that is accurate & not dumb rhetoric.

They deserve to be fully judged based on the actual progress they make with KiwiBuild, ideally that would be at the end of three years rather than 6 months.

Kiwibuild is so flawed only a true believer could not see through it. A bit like the NZ power policy – all mouth and no trousers.

This isn’t a thread about whether KiwiBuild is a good or bad initiative, PDB.
