No sign of young Aspen so far today. The other two pooks & the pooklet have shown up for brekky.

I just got called out & asked by Bluey on the fence to chase off that new fluffy grey flat-face cat from the parenga. He’s a cute little cat, quite young. Just moved in somewhere. Probably a Tom. Think he might be interested in just watching the ducks & pooks.

Hope Aspen’s ok. He’s typically always the first one here in the morning & normally spends as long in my back yard as down in te awa iti.

It’s ok – Aspen’s here, but he was just up on a shrub over the fence repeatedly shrieking too. Had a look at whatever the alarm was for. The grey cat was back again, further downstream by the neighbours’. Got it to go away – but it’ll be back no doubt. It obviously just loves watching the ducks n pookies too.

Pickles is still there on the parenga, he’s just moved down out of harm’s way. I think maybe what’s happening is that Aspen doesn’t want to hop over the fence into my place, leaving Pickles unprotected when there’s a cat around.

Pickles seems a bit naive about cats at the moment. Hasn’t yet learned to be constantly alert & always scanning for threats, like the adults do.

More tiny geckos around today and some adults. One leaped out of the waterbowl when I went out this morning.

What a clever bird Aspen is.

Yes. Sweetie’s taking wheat from my hand every day now. Always wary. Plucks up courage, takes grain from my fingers as I’m dropping them on the fence, then loses her nerve & backs away, but gets enticed back by quiet, soothing praise. “Good girl Sweetie. Want some more?” a couple of times will usually bring her in closer again. I repeat other pet phrases for her too, but not saying what they are. You’d understand but clods wouldn’t

She gets 2 feet away from my face & we look at each other’s eyes. It’s a remarkable experience. Hard to describe.

(blushes) they can’t be as soppy as what I say to the dog sometimes.

A friend read that dogs have ‘vocabularies’ of 250 words, but that seems rather high. Mine knows a reasonable number, but I wouldn’t have thought it was 250.

Did I tell you about the people who heard me talking to the dog on the walkway and hurried past as if I was a lunatic ? I was saying the sort of thing that people say to their dogs, not asking him if he had any idea when the new section of the motorway would open or anything ridiculous. They must have heard dog owners talking to the dog before.

They might have just got a text telling them their house was on fire or something. Or maybe thought you overheard them being smutty. Don’t worry about it. Everybody talks to their dogs.

No, they were just strolling along. Idiots

Everyone talks to the dog on a walk, and often to other dogs and their humans.

I heard something funny today. A local married couple are called Arthur and Martha.

I wonder if they ever wonder if they are Arthur or bloody/flaming Martha !!!

Might have depended what you were saying. I’ve got a video clip of two half-grown ducklings racing at hi-speed all over the stream doing paddle-wheelies n burnouts in the late evening, while adult ducks just swim by, not taking any responsibility. On the sound track you can hear me calling out to the ducks: “Righto – whose kids are those? Hooning around. What are they doing out here unsupervised at this time of night? Come on, anybody?”

As far as I can remember, I was just saying to the then very young dog that he was a ‘good walking dog’ and was doing well. That sort of thing.

I’d love to see that video. The people who acted as if talking to a dog was unnervingly bizarre would have had you committed.

Someone I knew slopped all all over her dog in public, but the poor thing was kept in a travel box most of the time. never taken for a walk and was left in a hot car on summer days. If anyone called at the house unexpectedly, dog (a Chihuahua/Pomeranian x) was in ‘the Chihuahua house’. It was
lot bigger than a Chihuahua so the plastic travel cage was a damned small house.

Pickles’ Aunti Possum has a copy of the video.

Auntie Possum – where are you ?

Much as I disliked the yappy, snappy little dog mentioned above, I am glad that I rang the Council and SPCA when I realised that it had been in a car all one hot summer day. It was there when I went past the car in the morning and still there when I came back, and I knew that the owner was out all day on whichever day it was.

Crying with laughter at it !

The pook and other ducks seem to be trrying to look as if they don’t have any idea of who these duckracers are. Not mine !

They really look as if they are taking off in terror that people will think that they are the parents who don’t know any better than to let their children behave like that.

I wonder if anyone buys the Reeves, Doonican, Burl Ives, 100 Golden Strings or whatever they are, World of Your 100 Best Tunes, Kamahl and all the other dross. If I ran on opshop, I’d just chuck those out to save space. The local one has ingeniously knocked the little circles out of unwanted singles so that they fit onto the ends of the racks and turned them into stylish ‘labels’.
