Neilsen news media audiences for February

These numbers have been posted on Twitter (I can’t find them on their website):

‘News sites’ latest audience numbers out (Nielsen, Feb uniques)’:

  • Stuff 1,967k (down 56k)
  • NZH 1,839k (up 45k)
  • Newshub 855k (up 47k)
  • RNZ 364k (down 7k)
  • ODT 183k (down 23k)
  • Spinoff 128k (down 29k)
  • Newsroom 87k
  • NBR 47k (down 17k)

I don’t know what the comparatives are.

Tim Murphy – “Newsroom back up by 33k to 87k a month after summer lull” – I doubt that is the same comparative.

Also re 1 News – “they’re split between 2 separate entries in the Nielsen results. Will try to make sense of that…”: – I don’t know how that adds up or compares.

The click bait crap on NZH and Newshub must be helping build audience numbers, and the sort of people that click on that crap may be more likely to also click on advertising, but that doesn’t do anything for news quality.

The ratings of the newer news sites, The Spinoff and Newsroom, show how hard it is to build an audience with news. Newsroom seems to do a very good job with investigative journalism – they have been operating for 1 year now.

How does this compare to blogs? I don’t think there’s any way of telling. Blogs are quite different to the news sites anyway, they are largely comment or links to news rather than delivering news, including the blogs promoted as great new alternatives to media, The Daily Blog and Whale Oil.

Open Parachute blog rankings used to give a bit of an indication (often inaccurate) of blog audiences but none of the bigger blogs feature there now. All it shows is that there are a lot of quite small blogs.

I click on NZH significantly more than the others. Almost never read a story, just for the puzzles. Does that get caught in these numbers? Dilemma if it does.
Just yesterday they ran a ticker to headline Hoskings opinion on Labour sex assualt handling. News? Another lefty msm propaganda sheet, am i right guys?

    • On your last question, not according to commenters at The Standard, The Daily Blog and most other leftie blogs

I quite like the lifestyles of the nice & ardens stuff on stuff and NZH. I’m sure they’re very popular with the drinking set.

    I added up all those numbers … That’s 5,470,000 audience members …

That means … like … some of yous are visiting more than one site!

    It shouldn’t be allowed.
Things were so much simpler when the State controlled the media.

What was so terrible about … like … a television license fee?

At least the Police knew exactly where every single TV set was! Now there’s no hope of keeping track of all these fancy indoctrination ‘devices’, gadgets and apps …

And Mikey … Mikey can actually … like …. GET THROUGH to people!

That’s what you say … but have you considered …

        – the affects of an incessant, unrelenting barrage of IgnoRightie-isms*?
        – what might ride into your brain in microwave form?
        – the co-dependent nature of regularly confirming he’s not messing with your head?
