And this is Dot. She flies in these days now & happily gobbles wheat out of my hand. Very quiet & personable. Lets me stroke her chest. Got a cute tail wobble she has.

Of course Sweetie’s not really happy with the competition for my favours, so she has to get in the frame too. I have to be very diplomatic.

Oh, shut up, Gezza. Who wants to pet a pukeko, anyway ? (runs away crying)

I may not have been as diplomatic as I should’ve 😦

Pickles’ plate & beak have turned proper red now. Three days ago they were still a browny-red colour. Movie still:

Bit of excitement for the wee lad 2 days back. Seamus Shag was down in the stream torpedoing about under the wai which was only a few inches deep, as he does, & Pickly-boy, also in there, decides to stroll on over to check him out. Seamus didn’t like it and started chasing him. Underwater.

Pickles starts yelling & flapping about. Sweetie instantly stops schmoozing me up on the fence, shrieks, and flies down to have a go at Seamus. Seamus isn’t bovered. Just pops his head up, ducks down again, zips out of tbe way, & carries on torpedoing about.

Of course I didn’t have the camera out. I wish these guys would tell me when they intend to depart from the script! Seamus wasn’t even on the filming schedule that day!

Aw c’mon. Pickles deserves some upticks for turning his beak red. He’s doing everything right for a little pukeko so far.

That’s not our own baby Pickles ! What a film star. He’ll be breaking a few chicks’ hearts any day now.

I’ll give myself an uptick to pass on to little P.

Oh yes he’s a very presentable looking young lad now. Only thing is, he’s a bit of a whiner. I let him in to the back yard if he’s whining because any of the others are on the fence or in here. I don’t like to leave him on the other side on his own every since Fluffy Flatface burst out of hiding and tried to get him the other day. I wondered why Aspen and Pickles stopped eating the wheat and were intensely tense and alert. Much shrieking and beating of wings. Dot duck was there too, and she took to the air. Poor Pickles had to jump down the bank. Got that cat in my sights now.

I thought that I had deleted your comment by accident, but was able to reverse it.

Have you tried a waterpistol on Fluffy Fatface ? Cats hate these, and it doesn’t hurt or harm them. It’s a great deterrent.

He’ll outgrow being a whiner. It’s hardly surprising if he’s a whiny attention-seeker at the moment with all his doting aunties and uncles.

  5. Gorgeous shots of a variety of Purple Swamphens and a lovely waddler. Aren’t you a lucky bloke Gezza. I’m so looking forward to our new home being built and the dam we’re reinstating below house. I’m hoping to create an environment that our Kookaburras will find irresistible. There’s so many skinks/geckos/frogs up there there’s no lack of food.

I’m lucky that they’ve all got so used to the camera, trav. These close ups are just a couple of feet away from the girls. They don’t mind as long as I show their best side.

PS: Your kookies will be rather loud – hope to see some photos or clips soon?

        • They’re few and far between. Often heard but rarely seen. In the next few years you’ll have to come and see the set up. Lots of wildlife and thats just the humans!

I notice today at midday that the ducks are all resting in the shaded water on the far side of the stream. For the last few weeks it’s only been mallard & mallard/grey hens on the water here, but over the last week the mallard and mallard/grey drakes have all arrived. And nearly all of them have now paired up. They stay with the same partners for a year or at least until the first brood of ducklings.

I’ve been watching them doing their head-bobbing displays as they sort out who they think is hot & worth hanging around with. There’s also been a strange bird whistling every now and then. I was trying to locate it & I discovered today it’s what the drakes sometimes do:

“Grunt-Whistle: A one-second display where the male raises out of the water, pulls his head up, and gives a remarkable whistle, followed by a grunt as he moves back into a normal posture.”

That sounds like a Kenneth Williams character.
