Very cruisy indeed. This is my favourite Floyd instrumental; I love the eccentric guitaring of Syd Barrett.

Thank you. It’s been Monarchs for Africa this late Summer/early Autumn, that bush. It’s brought butterflies from everywhere – Red Admirals and the White butterflies as well. I’ve never seen so many Monarchs as I’ve seen this year though, and that bush has been a main attraction for them – and honey bees.

Luckily the pooks haven’t gone after them. I imagine they’ve got a terrible taste. The pukekos are adept at catching insects and moths with their beaks. Very quick.

No doubt at all there are on or more newborn pooklets somewhere further down the bank.

(Got interrupted. Aspen was standing on the back ramp, banging on the metal screen door. Sweetie then arrived. She comes around the ramp and taps on the bottom window. So I looked out and Pickles was there too. I have to feed them by name. Aspen hangs back. Never lets me get nearer than about 3 feet. Neither will Pickles. Sweetie will come right up & eat from between my fingers, but not from my palm – and is still easily spooked.

Pickles raids theirs – so food-driven he’s forgotten to be wary & come right up close to get at Sweetie’s grains on the concrete when I’ve been putting it down: I’ve been able to push him gently away twice. He gets so fixated on the food he doesn’t care. Very soft feathers. Soft as down.)

Back to the new pooklets. The adults are still disappearing down the bank with food. And today, when Sweetie took some away and went down the bank to the nest somewhere hidden from view, I could finally hear the very recognisable pooklet cheeping start when she got there. Pickles was a silent baby bird for a few days.

I don’t remember when we have had them in such large numbers as we have this summer, unless they are being like a stage army and going round and round. They seem to have made a real comeback, thank goodness.

Ohhhhh…..not more pooklets. It’s not FAIR ! (throws tantrum)

The extreme heat has made the candles in the laundry cupboard turn from looking like this I to looking like this )</b) How annoying, I put one in a candlestick and it looks absurd. Memo to self; keep 'em in the fridge in summer.

              L to R
              Sweetie, Pickles, Aspen

Bluey turned up on the fence well after it had got quite dark. I thought it was Sweetie he was so quiet – until I got close and realised how big he was and saw his rugged looking plate. Blow me down, he came within two feet of me and demurely accepted some wheat from my fingers like Sweetie first did!

I expect he’s doing most the child-minding like he did with Pickles.

Btw – Pickles & Aspen have already been fed. They’ve just hung around to cadge more when Sweetie turned up.
